PIRATES’ search for a home win goes on after tonight’s Elite League fixture against Wolverhampton was abandoned with only three heats completed.

The hosts trailed 10-8 when the action was halted at Wimborne Road, with a downpour rendering the track unsafe.

It was a blow for Poole who had been hoping to secure their first home victory since May 14, but team manager Neil Middleditch admitted there was no choice but to call the meeting off.

He told the Daily Echo: “I’m a bit disappointed because rain was forecast all day and we had none, then 7.30pm came round and the heavens opened.

“It was the right decision because it would have been dangerous and the racing would have been a farcical, follow-the-leader situation.

“It becomes like ice when you put water on the track and it just isn’t safe.”

With wet weather closing in, the meeting officials made the decision to start promptly and Pirates opened with a 4-2.

Poole guest Kyle Howarth - a replacement for injured roommate Josh Grajczonek - gated off the inside, but both Darcy Ward and Tai Woffinden slipped past him on bend two.

The first reserves’ race opened in less than ideal fashion for the hosts when Kyle Newman was sent sprawling on a slippy first bend.

That left Ben Hopwood - in the last meeting of his month-long spell - to battle it out for second place in a tight finish.

The visitors then edged in front courtesy of another 4-2, Piotr Pawlicki rounding brother Shamek Pawlicki on bend two before Ricky Wells dished out the same treatment to Maciej Janowski a lap later.

Racing was subsequently suspended for 10 minutes as rain began to fall in earnest, before the meeting was abandoned altogether.

Pirates now have a two-week break from action, with Leicester the next visitors to Wimborne Road on June 18.
