PERFECTIONIST Steve Way was not happy with his time – despite taking second spot in the 10km race at the Poole Festival of Running on Sunday.
The Bournemouth AC runner came in a minute behind winner and defending champion Boniface Kiprop Kongin, clocking 31:33 in the latest leg of his warm-up for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next month.
And while he admitted the Kenyan was in a different class to the rest of the field, Team England’s marathon man revealed he had expected a better time from himself in the Poole Park showpiece.
Asked whether he was happy with the performance, Way told the Daily Echo: “Not particularly. I was after a time about 30 seconds faster than that but it wasn’t too disastrous. My expectations weren’t that high because it was my first run since I won the 100km so it was more a case of getting back into things.
“Boniface was just awesome,” he continued. “He made it look so effortless. I knew what to expect and I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a lot more in the tank.”
Way’s preparations continue with a 5000m track event on Saturday, representing Bournemouth in the British Athletics League in London. He will also compete in a series of marathons and half-marathons before travelling to Scotland.
“I’m pretty much racing every weekend now with varying degrees of effort required. Some I will tackle flat out with some controlled training runs to build up my preparations.”
