GUTSY Sam Thompson bounced back from his high-speed crash to claim first place at Donington Park on Sunday.

The 19-year-old Bournemouth rider won round three of the cup class in the supporting race of the World Superbikes meeting.

Thompson, who walked away from a 110mph spill at Oulton Park earlier this month, only received his replacement bike on the eve of the competition.

“After a huge crash at Oulton Park we were lucky to have a bike to race this round so we wanted to make the most of it,” explained Thompson.

“We collected the bike at the circuit on Thursday evening and finished putting the last touches to it by midnight.”

Despite having no time to test his new machine, Thompson qualified first in the cup class on the Strategic Solution-backed bike.

In the opening race Thompson collected 20 points for a second- placed finish before stepping up a gear in the next contest.

Thompson established a five-second lead over his main rival before closing out the race.

The victory lifted Thompson from fifth place to second in the championship.
