CHERRIES ladies overcame a 70-minute delay to secure a 3-1 win over Winchester City in the Hampshire Junior Cup final.

After Winchester’s goalkeeper was injured early on at Fareham Town FC, a delay of more than an hour ensued.

Once play resumed, Sammie Humphries (2) and Emily Trim struck for Cherries.

It was the first trophy won by a Cherries women’s side and boss Vince Taylor said: "I'm very proud of the team, they did a great job.

“We were here from 6.15pm to warm up and get our minds ready for the game, but to have an hour break just after we started was not ideal and could have affected them.

“Initially we didn't look like we wanted it as much as Winchester.

“But once we got into the game and didn't let the occasion overawe us there really was only one team in it.

“I hope I can keep all the girls together and build on this next season.”
