AFC Bournemouth: Dan Gosling will be a good fit for us says boss Eddie Howe

AGREED TERMS: Dan Gosling

BOSS Eddie Howe believes Dan Gosling will be an excellent fit for Cherries and says the versatile midfielder can bring “different options” to the table.

Gosling has agreed terms on a four-year deal with Cherries and will officially complete his move from Newcastle on a free transfer once he has passed a medical.

Cherries have beaten off a host of clubs to secure his services and his arrival will end a lengthy pursuit by Howe who has been tracked the player for several months.

News his signing was imminent was revealed by the Daily Echo on Tuesday when Gosling’s agent David Hodgson confirmed Cherries were “the only club” he would be joining.

The 24-year-old, who progressed through the ranks at Plymouth, joined Everton in a deal worth around £1.2million in January 2008 before signing for Newcastle four years ago.

Capped by England at under-17, 18, 19 and 21 level, Gosling has made 46 appearances in the Premier League and Howe kept tabs on him when he played 14 times during a loan spell at Blackpool last season.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Echo, Howe said: “We have been speaking with Dan and his representative for a while and were always very keen to bring him here. He did very well on loan at Blackpool and ended the season in the team at Newcastle. That Premier League experience will be invaluable to us and we are very pleased to have got him.

“He is a box-to-box central midfielder who has lots of energy. He is very good technically and also has a goal in him. He is an attack-minded player who can do all disciplines of the game so I think he will complement our team very well.

“Midfield is a really important area of the pitch and I think you need quality in that position. It was definitely one of our strengths last season. We are looking to build all the time and I think he will give us different options as well. He is an adaptable player and he can play different positions within central midfield so that is why I think he will suit us very well.

“He is very ambitious and a very dedicated professional and his aim is to get promoted with a Championship club. We had to fight off some competition to get him and it is always a good sign when other clubs are interested.

“We are delighted he chose us ahead of them and I think he was attracted by our style of play and our vision for him so, hopefully, it is a good match and we will both get when we are looking for from the signing.”

An interesting signing, strenghtening one of our stronger areas and increasing competition there,a slong contract too, so he must have faith in the player, though I hope that it doesn't mean that some one like Ritchie isn't moving on. A typical Eddie signing though, done without fuss or publicity and quietly, I hope that he has a similar arrangement for strikers too set up.

Four years !, crikey that's a big old contract for a player that has had a lot of injury issues. I can see why he chose us.
Still, there were fitness doubts over Ings this time last year, and we all know what happened there!.
In Eddie we trust and hopefully this will turn out to be another astute signing of a player that will blossom under EH and become a valuable asset.

We're not 'letting Grabban go' - he put that clause in his contract and we had to agree to keep him last time. The clause means we have no say in the transfer, if the clause is met then we must say yes.

It's all on Grabban, seems he's gone on holiday to consider his options, which presumably means it isn't a straight easy decision for him.

A positive signing.

As to the Grabban situation it's a case of "Que sera, sera".

We created a very positive image of the club, it's ambitions, the manager and our style of football during this season and I'm sure many players will take that in to consideration if approached by EH.

Eddie is no fool and I would be surprised if he doesn't have some feelers out for available strikers or have plans to the two lads he brought last season to step up to the first team.

Rantie will also get a closed season break this year and should be rested rather than playing a summer season followed by our winter season. We should then see what he can do and whether he has adapted to the English game, it will be a make or break season for him and also a season where we see if the other players can play to his strengths.

True the clause in his contract meant we have to let him go if met, lots of players do this so not tied to the club I think its still good business for us. Good for the club and Grabbs . The ideal scenario would be if we could find a good replacement from the lower leagues to put away the many easy chances we create Who knows maybe we already have one Eddie will know this. Still a few comings and goings to go yet. A interesting close season and still building the team next season. The fact we don't seem to be increasing the size of the ground this season to me indicates as we have all said we are building the right way steady forward steps no backward ones

Rantie should improve after a good pre-season. He had a lot of disruption last season so by next season he should be more settled and more focused.

I was hacked off with Grabban the last time he and his agent pulled this stunt, so the sooner he's gone the better!!! He's probably on holiday, while his agent is courted by other clubs, trying to get the best deal for Lewis, as it just seems to be money money money with him. I accept that being a footballer is a short career, but for goodness sakes, they're hardly skint at this level... Back to the theme of the story, delighted Gosling has signed. I am concerned about his injury track record, I'm hoping the club have this covered in some way in his lengthy contract. But still only 24, and I'm sure Eddie and Jason can get the best out of him, as they have with everyone else.... UTCIAD

A superb signing, it speaks volumes for the kudos that the club now has under Eddy and the chairman and of course uncle Max !

Real pedigree and experience all wrapped up in a quality fairly youthful player and make no mistake Eddy will get the best out of him he will begin to enjoy football again when he comes here.

It seems to have gone a little quiet on the Grabban front though !

Onwards and upwards with or without him I cannot bloody wait until next season.

Free transfers only mean we don't pay a fee to another club, we could be paying him a massive signing on fee and he would also want bigger wages as he is a " free transfer "

The mention of injury and our four year contract is interesting as it would have convinced a young man (with ambition and a FA warning over betting scams) that he will get (for the first time in a long while) regular football and security. The sea-side is also very good for his health btw! I think this signing underscores our intentions. This is a quality player and this signing might prove to be our very best under EH.
The World Cup a brief holiday and then bingo our season all starts again. Fantastic!
If Rantie steps up and Grabban stays (or not) then we still have the essential quality to remain in the Championship and do well. Should we really want to push on though then clearly we need to sort out some permanence re Grabban (to stay or to go) so that we can have some cash to spend or of course start paying down our debt; as we will start getting FIFA on our back and (we are not Man City) can't afford to lose money on fines.
A fascinating season lies ahead I can't wait!

I have just Googled Lewis Grabban , and it states that he plays as a striker for Cardiff City! Are we being withheld information from the club? Does anyone know if he has actually gone?

No not yet, just allowed to have a chat with them, like he did with Brighton.

The new average wage for a Championship Player is said to be £261,068 p.a. a quarter of that of the average Premier League player. I believe that Eddie is aiming for a First Team Squad of 22/24 players and whilst we may not pay the " average" we have to be competitive which would probably give us a wage bill in excess of £6m on first team players alone. given that the average spend at AFCB on Matchdays is said to be £25 a head - we do so need not only to fill the ground for each and every game but to add capacity by at least 50%. A crazy way to run a business.

West Brom have just released 10 players, some loans, but a few available on frees........1 of them is our old loan player Liam Ridgewell, he would be a good signing, centre back or left back, a good solid Premier League experienced defender. if WBA are having a clear out see if Zoltan Gera is available certainly not a box to box player but can definetly play football get on the phone Eddie and see if hes fit and available cant wait til the season starts even a friendly will do

How can the Cherries afford to pay players £22k a week on gates of 10,000 and stay within the Financial Fair Play rules?

The club is playing a dangerous game i feel.

I'm sure Gosling is being very well paid but I don't believe it's 22k a week, as far as I know and I have never been aware of it the club don't make it known how much they pay the players yet many fans seem to know how much they all earn, maybe these fans were sat in on the negotiations with the player the agent the chairman and the owner of the club, or maybe the postmans cousins neighbour knows the groundsman!!!!!

I see the Cherries are 8th fav at 16-1 to win the Championship next season and only 5-1 to get promoted to the Premiership.
The bookies seem to think we have a chance.
