SCOTT Mitchell secured double delight in Germany as he filled his final ranking berth for the 2015 BDO World Championships and lifted the Munster Country Classic.
The Dorset darts star ensured all 12 of his ranking boxes were filled – eight with tournament victories – with a run to the last 16 of yesterday’s Munsterland Trophy in Germany before winning through seven rounds to succeed in today’s showpiece.
‘Scotty Dog’ trumped German Michael Stubs and Australia’s Michael Tetkovic in straight legs before a 4-2 victory over Kevin Munch secured progress to the last 16.
Mitchell then endured close calls against Dutchman Matthew Medhurst (4-3) and Brit Gary Robson (5-3) before easing past fellow England international Tony O’Shea 6-2 to set up a final against Phillip Blackwell.
The first two legs of the final were shared as Blackwell produced a 12-dart finish in the second, but Mitchell won the next four legs, the pick a 13-dart finish on double top in the fifth.
At 5-1, the Bransgore-based player was one leg away from victory and, despite wobbling in the next two, won through with 135 and 137 prior to landing double 12 to take the match in the ninth.
Mitchell told the Daily Echo: “You know when you’re playing well and when Phil missed a few doubles I knew I had the momentum to take the game off him.”
Mitchell, who is also the current French Open, Sunparks and Romanian Open champion, returns to action next weekend in the Welsh Open.
