PIRATES chief Matt Ford has vowed to go back in for Benji Compton after injury scuppered the youngster’s switch to Wimborne Road.

Poole have been looking for a new reserve ever since axing Lee Smart from their line-up on Friday, April 25.

Compton was set to be that rider but complications arose when he suffered a finger injury while guesting for Swindon at Lakeside on that same date.

Smart was unavailable to come back in for the visit to Belle Vue the following Monday, but did feature in the 48-42 win over Birmingham six days ago as Poole reverted to their original one-to-seven.

That paved the way for the fit-again Compton to make his Pirates debut against Wolverhampton yesterday evening, but the 27-year-old Kent charger suffered a broken scaphoid riding at Stoke in the National League on Saturday, which is expected to put him on the sidelines for four to five weeks.

With Adam Ellis already booked to cover for the injured Kyle Newman tomorrow, Ford has moved to cover the vacant number seven position by recruiting the services of Ben Hopwood.

Speaking about Compton’s on-off switch to Pirates, promoter Ford told the Daily Echo: “It was a catastrophe from start to finish. Unfortunately Benji has broken his scaphoid, so we need to find a suitable replacement.

“I will probably do something for a month so we have the option of using Benji afterwards, but at this point in time I just don’t know who that’s going to be.

“I will let him get fit and we have his acceptance that he is coming in, so I don’t see any reason why that wouldn’t be the same in a month’s time when he recovers from his injury.

“It just means for this month we will look at different replacements.”

Tickets for tomorrow’s meeting are priced at just £10 for adults.
