AFC Bournemouth: Cherries manager Eddie Howe upbeat after Ipswich stalemate

Bournemouth Echo: POSITIVE: Eddie Howe POSITIVE: Eddie Howe

CHERRIES boss Eddie Howe admitted he could not be anything but positive about the performance that resulted in a 2-2 draw at Ipswich.

Efforts from Steve Cook and Matt Ritchie saw the visitors twice draw level with their hosts as the Dean Court side kept themselves in the Championship play-off race.

Although Cherries could not claim victory despite having the lion’s share of possession and chances in Suffolk, Howe had plenty of praise for his players.

He told the Daily Echo: “I leave happy with the performance, happy with the efforts of the players and happy with the determination to never give up but just disappointed we didn’t get our rewards.

“For 15 or 20 minutes at the end we had them penned in. Unfortunately the ball didn’t bounce our way and we couldn’t get the goal we wanted.

“For the rest of the game we moved the ball very well and were the braver team in possession and I thought we were dominant. Somehow we found a way to concede the first goal while being in total control.

“I think it was the first time they had been in our box that they scored so it’s disappointing for us that despite having created chances and dominated, we found ourselves 1-0 down.

“It’s a measure of the team that we responded and got an equaliser. We didn’t let the goal affect us negatively and it was a similar pattern in the second half - we conceded and showed real guts to come back.”

Cook scored a superb bicycle kick to put Cherries level at 1-1 heading into the break and Howe admitted the centre-half’s finish was a special effort.

He added: “I think you can certainly call it a wondergoal. It was an overhead kick showing real technical ability not usually seen from a centre-half.

“I’ve certainly tried them but they never went anywhere near the top corner. It’s very rare that a centre-half has the athletic ability to do that, so it was a great goal.”

Living in Essex so have not seen the Cherries for a few seasons. Started supporting in 1945 so quite excited at a chance to see the game today. Very impressed particularly by O'Kane my man of the match. Some of the midfield combination play was superb and much superior to the kick and rush style employed by Ipswich. Has anybody got a house for sale in the Bournemouth area - I envy season ticket holders at Dean Court. I also enjoyed hearing the cry of Boscombe from the fans. Keep it up Eddie - the team reminded me of Arsenal at times today with their slick inter-passing. Can we buy Ramsay?

Need reading to not win tonight too.
Burnley up and we Drew twice with them.
Overall we've probably had 4 poor performances all season which is unbelievable over 40 odd games.
Even when we've lost the effort and quality has been there for all to see. One or 2 good signings now will cement us as a top 6 side next season if the dream this season doesn't happen.
Get you're millwall tickets and give the boy a great send off for the seasons efforts.

I've got "two" new teams to support this week, 'Boro tonight and Yeovil on Friday. Sorry to see the Glovers on their way back to League 1 but hope they can hurt Brighton as their last effort in this league to help our cause.

Whatever happens you only have to look at where Yeovil and Donny have ended up and where we are in the table to see how well we have done this season, long may it continue!

Listened to bbc Suffolk on the way out of the car park. A lot of the callers were very complimentary of the way we played. Two of them even called us the best team they had seen at Portman Road this season.

our players should hold their heads high and I hope this Saturday is a proper celebration of a great season.

Totally agree we are not quite ready for the prem but making the playoffs would have been nice and still a chance but very slim now. Seems over the last few games our old nemesis of missing sitters has reared it's head again something Eddie will have to address this close season, If we had put away half of the sitters we've had this season we would be up with Leicester I'm sure. The team and the infrastructure is being put in place slowly and steadily which is the right way, can't wait to get my 2014 -2015 season ticket its going to be another great season. Burnley done it this season with Eddies team, next year or the year after Eddie will be the one who took afcb from league 2 to the prem for sure.

Couldn't agree more. A bit more of a clear out is needed still, and bring in 2 or 3 Premier quality players to bolster the squad. I think in the end, that was our undoing, one or two injuries, and suspensions. But you're right, it was in affect, the squad that Eddie put together at Burnley, there were injuries to major players at the time of his leaving, which was hampering their progress. We on the other hand, are building nicely, to having a strong squad and next season should be a cracker!!!

Yep I was listening to BBC Radio Suffolk after the game with a Town supporter and it was great to hear Mick Mills and the listeners saying we were the best team to visit Portman Road this season. Shame we couldn't get 3 points but heh what a season it's been. Can't believe people slagging off O'Kane, apart from the odd miss-pass (everyone is guilty) he has a good first touch, vision and composure on the ball and adds to the team. Harry A is good in his own way too but always a yellow or red card in waiting. Of course you want passionate players but crazy tackles and back-chat are stupid and as for applauding players when they get sent off - they cost the team and should be booed imho! UTCIAD

Your post was going well, until you mentioned the booing of one of our players. On the very rare occasion, there has been the exception, but I'd never boo one or more of our players. The time to vent an opinion is after the game, on here let's say, or other media, but never booing during or after the game!! IMHO

Thanks Pete, booing a bit ott I agree but CERTAINLY no applause. Silence might get the message over except of course the opponent doughnuts will be cheering! I hope you are not one of those supporters who believe we never commit a foul, are never offside and think officials are especially selected for our games because of their ineptitude. On which subject I thought D'Urso had a reasonable game yesterday judging by the performances we have suffered from him over the years!

We have had a FANTASTIC season considering it was our first season in the renamed CHAMPIONSHIP (2nd time really as it's still the old 2nd Division to some of us Boscombe fans !!!). Two more games to go and two wins and who knows what twists of fate may lie ahead, the "Fat Lady" is waiting in the wings ready to come on stage but she isn't "singing" yet !!!.
Also what a terrific comment from StuGibbs the Ipswich fan who wrote on this site, it goes to show that fans can be generous with their praise for the opposition without being nasty or vitriolic, something some of OUR so called fans might like to take on board. As I was taught at school many years ago, "Manners maketh Man" (you can tell how long ago from the word maketh !!!).

I hope you are not one of those supporters who believe we never commit a foul, are never offside and think officials are especially selected for our games because of their ineptitude. On which subject I thought D'Urso had a reasonable game yesterday judging by the performances we have suffered from him over the years!
Oh I've done plenty of giving it the silent treatment over the years, as you say, silence can be more powerful, my thoughts are, if you can't say shout anything constructive, you're better off keeping quiet. I have no problem with officials giving us offside, or free kicks against us when it's a correct decision. But the quality of those in charge this season has for the most part been pretty poor, and no, I don't believe they are selected for our games, you see it week in, week out on the box. I don't mind losing games, when we've lost to a better side, but when you feel you're up against 12 or even 13, then yes, I get really annoyed about it!!!

On the very rare occasion, there has been the exception, but I'd never boo one or more of our players. Really looking forward to next season.
It's a compliment to the squad we even had a chance at the Playoffs this season. Whilst still possible, I do doubt we will make it!!!

What a brilliant season.

And what a goal from Steve Cook!!!
