A SPECTACULAR goal from the halfway line by Mitchell Sherred proved a deciding factor for Burton in their 3-2 Bournemouth cup victory over Corfe Mullen United Juniors at Ferndown.

Burton opened the scoring when Lewis Crozier’s corner sailed straight into the back of the net before Sherred’s long-range effort found the top corner.

Meanwhile, Sam Pollard scored for Corfe with a delightful lob over the Burton keeper to keep the league high-fliers in conten-tion.

Burton, however, had the final say in the opening period when Alfie Gormley’s low shot gave them a 3-1 advantage.

Corfe Mullen hit back quickly after the interval when Miles Wilcox’s corner was diverted into the net by a Burton player.

Despite several chances at both ends, Burton held on to their slender lead to lift the cup.

Third-placed Corfe Mullen will now turn their attentions to the league in a three-way race for the title with leaders Grange and Rossgarth.

Corfe Mullen manager Lee Elliott said: “It was a close-fought game between two sides who were fully committed.

“The result was in the balance until the last minute which provided lots of excitement for the crowd. While we were disappointed to lose credit must go to Burton who deserved the victory for their performance over the whole match.”
