WIMBORNE captain Dave Huggins praised his side's defence after they had stormed back from a 14-7 deficit to beat Oldfield Old Boy's 31-14 at home.

The Leigh Parkers twice fell behind as they ended the first half 14-12 adrift before they ran in three tries in the second period to triumph in Southern Counties South.

But victory came at a price with centre Matt Wells sustaining a broken nose and flanker James Baker breaking a thumb.

Huggins said: "Our defensive character was brilliant especially as we went in at the break trailing. It was pouring down with rain and conditions were awful, but we still managed to come back and get three second half tries to win it.

"The fact we didn't concede after the interval was a huge plus. We had been confident going into the match, but at 14-12 behind you can begin to doubt yourself.

"So we decided at the break that we had to play our own game, not play their game, and once we did that we were more defensively sound and it paid off."

Huggins ran in Wimborne's opening try after good work from Paul Roberts and Steve King.

Jim Brokenshire got their second before props Russell Tinsdale and Joe Green marked their return to the side with a touchdown apiece.

King got their fifth try following a superb 30-metre solo run, with Roberts adding three conversions.

Baker, who only found out he'd broken his thumb the following day of the match, played through the pain barrier to finish the game.
