Cherries: Howe's men down Royals

Bournemouth Echo: GOAL-DEN BOY: Matt Ritchie celebrates this evening GOAL-DEN BOY: Matt Ritchie celebrates this evening

REVENGE, finally, was sweet.

While it remains to be seen whether Eddie Howe’s heroes will go on to make the Championship play-offs, this victory was particularly satisfying for Cherries supporters.

The memories of Cherries’ Jermain Defoe-inspired near-miss of 2001 may have faded but the scars had lingered. Leading 2-0 and 3-1 at the Madejski on the final day of the season, a late leveller saw Sean O’Driscoll’s men pipped.

Defeat at Dean Court towards the end of the 1998-99 campaign had also put a spoke through their play-off aspirations, while Wade Elliott’s penalty miss during a 2-2 draw in Berkshire in 2002 proved costly as the Dorset club were eventually relegated.

However, another scintillating first-half showing, coupled with some clinical finishing, ensured this contest was effectively over by half-time as Howe’s team recorded an eighth win in their past 10 games and a fifth on the trot.

Having last achieved the double over the Royals during their days together in Division Three (South) in the 1960s, Cherries put this one to bed with relative ease inside 45 minutes.

Reading, who last night joined Swindon as Cherries’ most-played opponents in the Football League, were ruthlessly dismantled as Howe’s rampant charges turned on the style to emphatically put to the sword a promotion rival.

Matt Ritchie’s double inside the opening 19 minutes paved the way for victory before Yann Kermorgant’s header on the stroke of half-time capped another memorable first-half display.

Eunan O’Kane was recalled to the starting line-up as boss Howe made one enforced change with Harry Arter serving the first of a three-match suspension.

The Royals made a flying start and went close to drawing first blood inside the opening 60 seconds when Cherries goalkeeper Lee Camp was forced to beat away Jordan Obita’s stinging volley.

And Cherries had an escape when Reading defender Kaspars Gorkss wastefully headed over from close range after being picked out by Alex Pearce’s centre.

Cherries took the lead from their first attack after six minutes when Ritchie drilled home his seventh goal of the season with a thunderous left-foot strike.

The winger, who netted during Cherries’ 2-1 win at the Madejski in December, swept his shot past Alex McCarthy after Lewis Grabban’s cross had fallen invitingly for him just inside the 18-yard box.

An excellent team goal, it owed much to defender Steve Cook’s defence-splitting pass, which set Grabban scampering free down the left flank before the striker provided the assist.

As the visitors went in search of a quick riposte, Camp scooped up a low drive from Royston Drenthe after the former Real Madrid man had let fly after skipping across the top of the box.

Grabban was crowded out by a posse of defenders as he looked to carve out a shooting opportunity – but the move still paid dividends as Cherries doubled their lead after 19 minutes.

Kermorgant seized on the loose ball and teed up Ritchie, the winger majestically passing the ball into the bottom corner to register his and Cherries’ second.

Pavel Pogrebnyak’s tame effort failed to trouble Camp before Ritchie’s free kick from 35 yards was deflected past the post and out for a corner.

McCarthy pulled off a top-drawer save to keep out Kermorgant’s bullet header, the Frenchman climbing above the Royals defence to meet Grabban’s cross, only for the goalkeeper to thwart him from point-blank range.

Referee Andy Woolmer waved away Grabban’s appeal for a penalty after a Simon Francis cross had appeared to strike Chris Gunter on the hand.

And from the resultant corner, Ritchie headed the ball back into the danger zone where Tommy Elphick’s overhead kick just cleared the crossbar.

As Cherries looked for a third before the break, Grabban fired narrowly wide from a tight angle after outstripping the Reading defence to latch on to Kermorgant’s pass.

Kermorgant, whose promptings were at the heart of several Cherries moves in the opening period, deservedly got his name on the scoresheet on the stroke of half-time.

The striker arrived at the near post to apply a diving header to a Francis centre after the full-back had waltzed past hapless former England defender Wayne Bridge.

Marc Pugh, who had failed to make good contact with a Ritchie cross at the start of the second half, then fired inches wide of the upright after bursting through and trying his luck from 20 yards.

Grabban went close to netting the goal his efforts had richly deserved when he lifted his shot over the crossbar following neat approach play involving Ritchie and O’Kane.

And the Cherries striker again went close when his low effort flashed past the post before Reading pulled one back when Hal Robson-Kanu’s venomous drive whistled past Camp with 15 minutes remaining, his strike proving little more than a consolation.

Cherries: Camp, Francis, Cook, Elphick, Harte, Ritchie (MacDonald, 90), Surman, O’Kane, Pugh (Fraser, 73), Grabban (Pitman, 84), Kermorgant.

Unused subs: Smith, Ward, Rantie, Allsop (g/k).

Ritchie and Kermorgant get the plaudits quite rightly but listening on the radio the save in the first minute by Camp, yet another assist from Francis as Bridge couldn't be bothered to run with him and LeFondre a proven goal scorer being substituted after an hour because he's not in the game speaks volumes about our defence. The bargain signings of Camp and Kermorgant by Eddie have been season changers. Come on you Cherries the plays off are definitely possible now!

At around 8.15 last night I put the radio on in the mess room at work, not quite believing that we were 2-0 up at that stage. The passage of Kris Temple’s commentary leading up to Kermorgants goal was a fine indication of just how this team is taking everyone by surprise. I’m not certain even now that Temple could believe that Francis had turned a lost cause into a third goal and I didn’t stop shaking my head in disbelief myself for the rest of the evening. There is no end in sight to the levels this team is reaching and they are full steam ahead for chasing what was a pipe-dream 5 games ago. I’ll be damned if they aren’t going to do it!! Camp, Kermorgant have been the changing point in this season both are amazing never have we signed a striker in my life who has gelled with our other striker apart from Fletch- Defoe, these two just know where eachother are gonna be ! KEEP IT UP LADS YOUR LEGENDS AFCB AND PROUD! OOH BTW 2 WINS AGAINTS ADKINS !!!

What planet are you on ,we have gained a league place we have got a better run in than others above us and the deficit is only two points
Lets look at the facts, worse GD equals 1 point. and I would say Brighton have the best run in. But anyway lets hope we make it.
What a great night and what a great atmosphere.Well done to everybody. Reading have to be one of the worst teams given their position in the league. What hope would they have in the play-offs. I am so delighted that Eddie has stuck with youth and not bought the type of has-beens we saw on Saturday and last night. Drenthe, Bridge & Pogrebnyak all taking big wages and showing nothing in return. This is the team that let Ian Harte go last year who, in the right team with one of the best young managers in any league, is one of our players of the season. As for Le Fondre, he must be gutted we didn’t buy him especially when he heard the singing and love for Jann.
How lucky we are to have another season in the Championship and witnessing some of the best football ever seen at Dean Court. Along side of that we have a chance of something special so why shouldn’t we dream and savour every moment of every game in this special season.

My son has had a ST for a number of years now and as we live in the same house I've always read these comments pages so I would have some idea of what he was talking about when he got home. It is only this season that I have also listened to Solent commentary and ventured the occasional comment myself.
I can honestly say that I have never seen so much excitement and delight expressed in these comments as there has been over the past 5/6 weeks (I always ignore the trolls :!! ) There is even the rare cautiously optomistic comment by shminto :-).
All we can do now is pray that all our lads stick with us for next season and don't get tempted away by the undoubted interest that will be shown by some of the bigger clubs during the closed season.
Because next season is surely going to be the most exciting of our lives!!!
Well done to Max, Eddie, Jason and all our lads :-)

What an atmosphere all round the ground, it's what makes Dean Court at night very special.
If we get into the play offs no one will want to play us. Watch QPR slump in form (further) to avoid us till the final.
Did any one else share the thought that Gorkks looked non league at best. What a donkey, if that's Prem standard then we have nothing to fear.

Couldn't agree more. At times we were playing the sort of exhibition football that Real Madrid showed us before the season started. Against play-off rivals full of Premiership players.

One thing nobody has mentioned yet is how we never allowed Reading any space. Every time they got the ball and tried to do anything, somebody was on their back, forcing them into mistakes. We're closing players down much more quickly and consistently than we did at the start of the season. Whatever shape Reading might have had at the start, they lost it, so after 15 minutes or so we were finding those massive holes in their defence.

This is basically a League 1 team with the addition of Camp and Kermogant that EH has moulded into a side that looks capable of holding its own in the top division. Amazing.

Amazing.
I particularly like your Lge1 observation which I wholeheartedly agree with (+ Harte, Ward & Surman). It makes me immensly proud that this group of very talented players are growing in experience and are so hungry to play for each other and AFCB, amazing indeed to watch this story unfold!
Morning Ted, totally agree with that about where this team came from.
King Edward has turned a team of good players into a team of very, very good players that have grown in ability and confidence.

Camp, Kurmit, Harte and Surman really were inspired signings that have seemed to have bonded and grown with the less experienced players.

Some of the passing football last night was just amazing and I was in awe at the level of impenitence that Eddy and Jason have instilled in every single player.

Not one single player is worried about keeping the ball or receiving the ball anywhere on the pitch.

These are great days and boy am I enjoying them.

Off to Yeovil Saturday, 10.03 from Pokesdown arrives Penn Mill 12.05.

Train and match tickets booked, good times.

I bet that result put Adkins off of his post-match Happy Meal at McD's on the way home.

I see the whole 90 mins of last night is now avalable on Cherries Player if you want to re-live the dream. No Yeovil for me unfortunately as I like that trip, but back in the saddle on Good Friday.

I am totally blown away by how good our football is at the moment so it is nice to hear your views and that I am not getting carried away with it all .It's actually happening. An excellent result last night and I must admit I am still pinching myself and I have been banging my head on the table at work all day just to see if it was a dream. Thank goodness it was reality!!
.
Yes Mr raybren, it will be hard if Yeovil get their noses in front. You must remember that this is a local derby and they are scrapping against relegation. This will by no means be an easy game. If they take the lead it will get their tails up and we will be in for a battle.
.
We have to be disciplined and impose ourselves in the game.
.
Not 'smintoitus' more like 'donttakethem- forgrantederosis'.
.

.

Thank goodness it was reality!! . Yes Mr raybren, it will be hard if Yeovil get their noses in front. You must remember that this is a local derby and they are scrapping against relegation. This will by no means be an easy game. If they take the lead it will get their tails up and we will be in for a battle. . We have to be disciplined and impose ourselves in the game. . Not 'smintoitus' more like 'donttakethem- forgrantederosis'. . . Get in there you Cherries!! smhinto

ntederosis' when they played us!!! and look what happened to them!!!!

I last heard that he was contacting my 'concrete boots' maker friends in Italy apparently he got hold of the size of your feet!!!! Fortunately for you their protocol does not allow them to settle season ticket's disputes!!!

Unless AFCB lose five or six games on the trot we are unlikely to hear from him ever again not much of a man!!! or woman for that matter!!!

If we make the play offs I will be ecstatic but if we don't I won't be disappointed as there is nothing disappointing about the season,it has been an exciting time and more than I could ever have expected, the first half against Reading was sublime and totally outclassing our opponents and I see no reason for the success to stop.
