AFC Bournemouth: Pugh targets record-breaking end to March

Bournemouth Echo: MIDFIELDER: Marc Pugh, right MIDFIELDER: Marc Pugh, right

WINGER Marc Pugh is hoping Cherries can cap a memorable March by writing another chapter in the Dean Court record books.

Pugh has played his part as Cherries have claimed 16 points from seven games during a gruelling run of fixtures this month.

And victory at Birmingham tomorrow would see Eddie Howe’s men register a seventh away win of the campaign – the club’s best return in the second flight.

Steve Cook’s late winner at Barnsley six days ago earned Cherries a sixth away victory of the season, matching the total from 1987-88 under Harry Redknapp.

Pugh told the Daily Echo: “It would be great to be part of another piece of the club’s history. We have set and matched a few records since I have been here and that generally means you have been successful as a team.

“I think we have learned a lot from this season, especially in our away games.

“We took a couple of heavy beatings early on and they were a baptism of fire for us in the Championship.

“We won at Doncaster at the end of August and suffered a few close defeats on our travels before beating Reading and Sheffield Wednesday in December.

“We have won three of our four away games this month and only lost the fourth deep in stoppage time at Charlton.

“Birmingham is going to be another tough test and they had a great result at Millwall on Tuesday.

“But we are going there on the back of some excellent performances and confidence in the camp is high.”

Pugh, Cherries’ leading goalscorer in his first two seasons at the club and player of the year in 2011-12, was restored to the starting line-up for the midweek demolition of Leeds.

The 26-year-old, now in his fourth season at Dean Court, added: “We played some great stuff and it was probably one of, if not the best, team performance I have been involved in. We opened them up countless times and they didn’t know how to deal with us.

“Our front two caused them endless problems and it was an unbelievable first-half performance. We have come on leaps and bounds in the second half of the season and really stamped our authority on the division. Irrespective of where we finish, we have had a superb season.

“Anywhere in the top half would have been beyond our expectations and we have put ourselves in a great position. I think we have proved wrong a lot of people who doubted us.

“We put together a great run at the end of last season and who says we can’t do it again. We are seven points off the play offs and still have to play four of the teams around us. It is going to be an exciting end and who knows what might happen.”

Too true the season's not over for us by a long way! Mid-table mediocrity...my 'eye'!!!!!
I fancy us for another 3 points tomorrow and would like to see Grabbs & Yann start instead of the lone striker approach. So far their record speaks for itself so why not do this to change our away game tactic.
Good luck tomorrow boys!!!

(see if this one gets removed!!!!)

I agree the current form has changed my view that any place above the drop zone would have sufficed this season I now think that EH has honed the team so well that we can do a lot better. The welcome inclusion of Yann has made such difference he doesn't get pushed off the ball very lightly and he is able to pass the ball more accurately than we had seen before he came.

By the way are you up with the birds!!!! 6.21!!!! UTCIAD

Puuuuuggggggghhhhhh says it all really.... Play close to that first half display the other night, and I don't think any team in this league could live with us. Yann is certainly the difference, no wonder Charlton fans were so upset to lose him.... All we can do is keep taking it a game at a time, we know what happened last season, surely we can't hit that sort of form two years running!! Safe trip to all AFCB fans travelling to the game, and Good Luck to the team!!

Good to see Pughie on good form at the moment, at the end of last season and the beginning of this season he'd lost both his confidence and form. I don't know what Eddie does, but it works. At the moment everyone seems to be playing at their peak, apart from one Mr. Rantie. So let's hope Eddie can use his magic to help him start banging in the goals.

Charlton have lost Danny Hollands too.........gone on loan to Pompey! Guess his days in the Championship are over in their new bosses eyes.
