POOLE Town FC Wessex turned the tables on the reigning cup holders with a 4-1 success in a repeat of last year’s Dorset Cup final at Ferndown.

Dan Fairbairn, who hit a late winner for Poole Youth in their 3-2 win last season, was once again on the scoresheet.

But the striker’s opener was cancelled out by Ryan Mitchell before Mattie Phillips gave Wessex a 2-1 lead at the break.

Sam Herrington added a third for Wessex, while Mitchell completed his brace to put the tie beyond their Poole rivals.

The reigning Dorset League champions have retained just six of last season’s successful squad.

“We lost a few players to pro academies but signed some excit-ing new talent and the team has gone from strength to strength,” said Dan Herrington, a former technical development officer with AFC Bournemouth.

The new-look side reached the semi-finals of this year’s Hamp-shire Cup, losing 5-4 to Fareham.
