Poole Pirates: Good Friday double-header with Swindon Robins may count towards Shield

POOLE Pirates and Swindon Robins are set to appeal to the British Speedway Promoters’ Association as they aim to make their Good Friday double-header eligible for both the Elite League and Elite Shield.

Tonight’s Shield first leg at the Abbey Stadium has been called off due to forecasted rain and Poole promoter Matt Ford previously admitted that the second leg might not take place until June due to scheduling problems.

Bearing in mind this evening’s call-off, both clubs are keen for the two meetings on Friday, April 18 to count towards two competitions, but that must first be sanctioned by the BSPA’s management committee.

Ford said: “Dates-wise it was always difficult for us to stage a second leg and it’s possible that the BSPA will sanction the Good Friday meetings to count towards the Shield as well as the Elite League.

“If we get the go-ahead then the aggregate score on the day would determine the Shield winners.

“We haven’t had that confirmed yet. We would need to put that to the BSPA and see if they would be willing to allow it, but fingers crossed we will have an answer by the end of tomorrow.”
