AFC Bournemouth: Yann and Grabbs on target in Leeds battering WITH VIDEO

Bournemouth Echo: BRACE: Lewis Grabban BRACE: Lewis Grabban

IT was as if 24 years of hurt almost disappeared in 45 minutes.

Leeds’ victory at Dean Court in 1990, amid dreadful scenes of wanton violence from some travelling followers, resulted in Cherries’ brief stay in the second flight coming to an end.

On that fateful May Bank Holiday, a solitary goal from Lee Chapman had seen the visitors crowned champions, while Harry Redknapp’s men had been left to lick their wounds.

Fast forward and Eddie Howe’s class of 2014 recorded – in emphatic fashion – the club’s first victory over the Yorkshire outfit thanks to a near-perfect first-half display.

Cherries, unbeaten this season when they have taken the lead, never looked back after Yann Kermorgant had fired them in front after just 67 seconds.

And Leeds’ record of winning the past six encounters was effectively ended when Lewis Grabban netted a finely-taken double to give the hosts a thoroughly-deserved 3-0 lead at the break.

Cherries’ memorable march continued early in the second half when Kermorgant added his second and their fourth, with Ross McCormack’s goal providing scant consolation for the hapless visitors.

Victory hoisted Cherries into 10th place in the table and, on the evidence of this slick display, a seven-point gap to the play-offs looks anything but insurmountable.

Harry Arter and Marc Pugh were drafted in to the starting line-up as Cherries boss Howe made two changes following Saturday’s 1-0 win at Barnsley.

The pair replaced Eunan O’Kane, who dropped to the bench, and Ryan Fraser, who is understood to have reported for treatment after his exertions at Oakwell.

Cherries supporters could not have wished for a better start or first half as Howe’s men produced one of the best 45-minute displays in recent history.

Rampant from the first whistle to the last, the hosts looked likely to score every time they ventured forward as the Leeds defence came under constant attack.

The tone was set after just 27 seconds when Marc Pugh’s blistering drive forced Leeds goalkeeper Jack Butland to turn his effort past the post.

And Cherries were rewarded for their breathtaking start when they opened the scoring through Kermorgant after just 66 seconds following a well-worked corner routine.

The Frenchman was on hand to turn the ball past Butland from close range after Francis had met Ian Harte’s flag kick with a rasping volley, Kermorgant registering his fourth goal since his move from Charlton.

Grabban let fly from 25 yards, only to see his effort sail wide, before Rodolph Austin slipped as he tried his luck from distance, his shot – Leeds’s only effort of the first half – failing to trouble Lee Camp.

Leeds relied heavily on pumping a succession of high balls into giant striker Matt Smith but Cherries dealt comfortably with the aerial bombardment during the opening period.

And Howe’s men doubled their lead with a superb sweeping move after 18 minutes, adroitly finished by Grabban for his 16th goal of the season.

The striker tucked a neat right-foot shot past Butland after latching on to Francis’s perfectly-weighted cross, the defender set free by Ritchie’s slide-rule pass down the line.

Cherries were in dreamland – and Leeds in tatters – when Grabban bagged his second and the hosts’ third midway through the first half.

Francis brought up his hat-trick of assists when he found Grabban with an audacious back-heel, the striker firing a low left-foot strike past the shell-shocked Butland.

The goal prompted a chorus of “can we play you every week?” from ecstatic home supporters, while some Leeds fans taunted their own players with chants of “you’re not fit to wear the shirt”.

It could have been worse for the visitors just minutes later when Grabban turned provider for Kermorgant who saw his first-time effort thud against the base of the upright.

The second half continued in the same vein, with Cherries adding to their lead just six minutes after the restart when Kermorgant profited from some more charitable defending.

Although Harte’s free kick appeared to have come to nothing, Ritchie retrieved the ball before despatching a pinpoint cross to the far post where the Frenchman planted an unopposed header into the back of the net.

As Cherries continued to threaten, Butland clawed away a header from Steve Cook after the defender had met Harte’s 65th-minute corner with a powerful header.

Ross McCormack, the Championship’s leading goalscorer, threw the visitors a lifeline when he reduced the deficit after 69 minutes, the Scotsman scoring with their first shot on target.

Tokelo Rantie, on as a replacement for Ritchie, should have made it 5-1 following a slip by Tom Lees, only to be denied by Butland while the goalkeeper also thwarted the South African in stoppage time.

Cherries: Camp, Francis, Cook, Elphick, Harte, Ritchie (Rantie, 78), Surman (O’Kane, 54), Arter, M Pugh, Grabban, Kermorgant (Pitman, 83).

Unused subs: Ward, Smith, MacDonald, Allsop (g/k).

Leeds: Butland, Byram, Lees, Pearce, D Pugh, Mowatt, Murphy (Stewart, 58), Austin, Hunt (White, 58), Smith, McCormack.

Unused subs: Wootton, Walters, Tonge, Zaliukas, Cairns (g/k).

Referee: James Adcock (Nottinghamshire).

Attendance: 10,109 (including 1,338 away supporters).

Great game and fantastic result. If the team had stayed the same as the first half I think we could have had 8. It changed when Surman came off for O'Kane and we became a bit defensive again. Still no complaints from me. A thoroughly entertaining evening and now up to 10th. My bet of a play off spot could still be on!

I'll give L**ds some credit:-
1) I met 3 decent Leeds lads in the Portman
2) Their fans stayed behind them despite the score
3) Their team are sh1te and gave us 3 good points -though we were **** good in the 1st half!

FFS TK I'll forgive you for missing the first sitter as you'd just come on, but Mrs Ted would've netted the 2nd! Awesome pace but more finishing practice please!

my band of brothers, to the promised land.

You see, we are already there and there is still a wondrous place even beyond this garden of Eden, the glory of the Premiership, dare we even question it, who cares about that next plateau of delight we have just torn Leeds United apart, pulled their pants down and royally spanked their behinds with a giant red and black paddle.

Dizzy heights my pedigree chums dizzy heights indeed.

Shoot for the stars, and if you fall short you will still be over the moon.

What a match last night could have easily been a cricket score Leeds playing that high with such a slow defence was made for us. So happy this was the game we all wanted to win so badly and we didn't just win it we destroyed them well to everyone.

I like most of us always go to the opponents local paper to read the comments, most games we win especially against the so called bigger side say how did we play so bad against a side like Bournemouth, well I say how do we constantly make these sides look ordinary. Maybe its time for them to realize afcb is not the little old Bournemouth anymore we are a genuine championship site and getting better every game.

Season safe now beyond all doubts lets push on to see how far we can push up the table. One very VERY happy cherries fan today.

I was expecting this comment from you before the match.

This another game where if we let Leeds take the lead and get their noses in front it will lift them considerably. We must not switch off as we seemingly did against Charlton during the last half hour.
.
We must get hold of the game within the first 30 mins in order to force them out.
.
The longer the game goes on at nil-nil the more chance we will have of losing. If they take the lead with 20 mins remaining it is highly likely they will just sit back, string bodies across the box and just see the game out.

Strangely we have gone out from 66-1 to 80-1 to get promoted.
so a £5 double on us reaching the playoffs then getting promoted would pay out a tidy sum of £13,700.

Unfortunatly Mr golfer33 the above scenario has happened all too often earlier this season has it not?? I would be surprised if you did not agree.

However, that was due to a transitionary period of adjusting to this division. It's now seems that we have overcome that hurdle.

I have answered this question at least 20 Thousand times. But just for you, I will try or attempt it again. This is living proof that you may well not be reading my posts properly or if at all. I mean this in a courteous and polite manner.
.
My comment regarding Grabban was made in view if the fact that he was struggling to hit the target during a prolonged barren spell in League One last season, along with a few below average performances of which was there for all to witness. Hence my comment AT THAT TIME that he may well not be up to Championship material, so AT THAT TIME my comment was well justified and I stand by it.
.
However, he has since proved me and no doubt others wrong and now he is the first name on the team sheet and justifiably so. I am very pleased that he has proved me wrong amd long may he continue to do so. Player of the year along with Francis I would say.
.
I notice that you have not acknowledged that I was right concerning Tubbs and Demouge. (Typical) There were many who argued with me, but it was so blatantly obvious that these two were way off the mark. Tubbs is a League Two player and that is his ceiling and I sincerely wish him well.

Court Side says...

The order of football teams in England are changing. Names like L**ds and Pompey are fast becoming relics of times past rather like L**ds neanderthal fans circa 1990. When we stuff them they say things like, "How can we lose to Bournemouth??!!!". Well listen up and listen good. We are the new order, we are the team that are going places. We would've waved as we went past but your so far away now it's getting very difficult to see you. I remember when L**ds came down here and rioted, beating up St Johns ambulancemen and smacking kids in the mouth. What goes around comes around. L**ds are the only club in the country i would feel no sympathy for if they went to the wall. I detest them and feel nothing but pride over the way we demolished them last night.
And, on another note, i saw Tommy Elphick having a pop at the fans in the 2nd half, pointing out the L**ds fans constant singing while i've also seen a few people comment on their "fantastic" support while we were allegedly mute. For 1, we pretty much gave everything from the stands in the 1st half when we were annihilating them and, like the players in the 2nd half, were content to see the game out, and for 2, L**ds didn't pipe up till after about an hour and from what i heard kept that going for about 20 minutes. Brilliant! Any teams fans can do that in difficult times, We did! So think on Tommy before having a pop at your own.
Agree totally on your opinion on Leeds. Their fans disgraceful behaviour with regard that game 24years ago was appalling and that’s putting it mildly.
However, on a more satirical note, our supporters are not known for their vocal support. I recall going to Dean Court back in the early 1980’s when just spattering of applause was aired when the team came out at the beginning of the match. Looking around the ground one could see some silly ‘twit’ wearing a stupid pair of 1970’ssunglasses, with ‘Timothy White’s’ sun cream up his arms with a copy of the match programme stuffed in his back pocket and an early copy of the Daily Echo stuck under his arm. Then to cap it all some idiot next to me referring to the singing opposition fans as ‘A noisy lot’.
.
This is just typical Bournemouth I’m afraid. Too many of the old ‘Blue-Rinse’ brigade. Perhaps we are just too conservative. Although, I did here a rare outburst of song in the old East Stand when we defeated Manchester United back in 82. Even Harry Redknapp used to comment of how quiet our supporters were.
.
Nottingham Forest suffer from the same problem. I have been to the City Ground on numerous occasions recently and the ground is like a morgue even when local matches are played.
.
I have also been to some Darlington v Hartlepool matches over the years where there were only three thousand in the ground yet it sounded like thirty thousand. Hence, the passion of the North East.
.
Burt we what we are I suppose. Well done to Eddie Howe, Jason Tindall, the players and club staff for preserving our Championship status, an excellent achievement.
.
