GREENFIELDS upset the form book with a ‘season’s best’ performance to beat reigning champions Moordown Athletic 3-2 at King George V Playing Fields.

The hosts, who are second from bottom in the BYFL Division One, notched up only their second league win of the season, while inflicting Moordown’s first defeat of the campaign.

Jeremy Sobisch and Sam Pringle gave Greenfields a two-goal advantage before Jamie Wilkinson reduced the deficit.

A penalty converted by Blessings Chibamba restored Greenfields’ superiority, while Wilkinson completed his brace from penalty spot to set up a tense finale but the home side held their nerve to seal an impressive victory.

A delighted Greenfields under-16s boss Hugh Craig said: “We are having a roller-coaster season and beating the title-holders was definitely the high spot so far.

“The game was very tight and the commitment and battling qualities of our boys was all important. Our coaches did a great job in preparing the team and deciding tactics. I could not fault any of our players, they all performed at their best and gave their all.”

Moordown manager Ano Bourton was full of praise for his team’s opponents.

“You have to give a lot credit to Greenfields who were on top of their game,” said Bourton.

The current champions are still in with a shout of maintaining the title despite Sunday’s setback.

Moordown are six points behind the leaders Redhill with two games in hand.

Title rivals Branksome United, meanwhile, have won all six of their league games and lock horns with Lyme Regis in this weekend’s Dorset Cup final.
