AFC Bournemouth: Third straight win for Howe's men

Bournemouth Echo: SCORER: Lewis Grabban SCORER: Lewis Grabban

CHERRIES striker Lewis Grabban’s stunning second-half goal helped Eddie Howe’s class of 2014 write another chapter in the Dean Court record books this evening.

Grabban’s 15th goal of the season earned Howe’s men a hat-trick of wins and three successive clean sheets in the second flight for only the second time in their history.

The feat was achieved for the first time by Harry Redknapp’s team in 1988 when Cherries finished 12th, the club’s highest finishing position.

Boss Howe made one change to the Cherries starting line-up with fit-again Harry Arter returning in place of Brett Pitman who was named among the substitutes.

Cherries came under some early fire and were forced to defend a couple of mule-like throws from Rovers’ Tommy Spurr but stood firm at the back as the missiles were hurled into their six-yard box.

Skipper Tommy Elphick stuck out a boot to block a long-range effort from Jason Lowe before Steve Cook nicked the ball off the right foot of Jordan Rhodes as Rovers’ leading marksman prepared to take aim.

However, and for all their early pressure, the hosts were thankful to goalkeeper Paul Robinson for making the first save of the game after five minutes.

The former England stopper parried from Grabban after the Cherries striker had raced into the 18-yard box and shot from a tight angle following Ian Harte’s measured pass.

Cherries goalkeeper Lee Camp scurried across his box to clutch a header from Rudy Gestede before Robinson had to get down smartly to his left to push Matt Ritchie’s low drive around the post.

Camp saved comfortably after Rhodes’s tame effort had failed to seriously trouble him, while Simon Francis skied a speculative strike high into the stand behind Robinson’s goal.

Harte’s free kick went straight down the throat of Robinson, his former Leeds team-mate, before Ritchie seized on the loose ball 20 yards from goal, only to drag his effort wide of the target.

Feeble claims for a free kick fell on deaf ears after Luke Varney had gone to ground under a Francis challenge as he prepared to go through on goal with referee David Webb unimpressed. Ritchie’s thunderous drive from 25 yards took a deflection off Lowe before flashing past the post – with Cherries twice going close to breaking the deadlock from successive corners.

Firstly, defender Cook arrived at the far post to meet Harte’s delivery with a powerful header, only to see his effort come crashing back off the base of the upright with Robinson beaten.

And from a well-worked flag kick, again taken by Harte, Francis let fly from around 25 yards with an alert Robinson tipping his rasping drive over the crossbar.

A chorus of boos from home supporters greeted the half-time whistle after Rovers’ early promise had petered out and Cherries had enjoyed the better of the opening period.

Cherries continued to probe at the start of the second half and a neat move involving Grabban and Francis ended with Ryan Fraser being stopped in his tracks as he prepared to pull the trigger.

Francis needed treatment after being caught by Varney’s strong challenge before Howe made his first change with Marc Pugh replacing Fraser nine minutes after the break.

Rovers’ Manchester United loan defender Michael Keane headed over from a Conway corner before Cherries had a penalty appeal waved away after Ritchie had been sent sprawling by Spurr.

Grabban drew first blood for Cherries with a superb effort midway through the second half, the striker squeezing a venomous right-foot shot inside Robinson’s near post from around 25 yards.

And, just minutes later, Cook went close to doubling their lead when his piledriver from close range was turned around the post by Robinson, who perhaps should have done better for the goal.

Cherries continued to defend stoically as Rovers forced a flurry of corners with captain Elphick, a rock during the win at Blackpool, again leading the troops with distinction.

Cherries: Camp, Francis, Cook, Elphick, Harte, O’Kane, Ritchie (Coulibaly, 82), Arter (MacDonald, 86), Surman, Fraser (Pugh, 54), Grabban.

Unused subs: Pitman, Smith, Rantie, Allsop (g/k).

Booked: Ritchie.

Rovers: Robinson, Kane, Hanley (Williamson, 75), Keane, Spurr, Varney (Feeney, 62), Evans, Lowe, Conway, Gestede (Dunn, 62), Rhodes.

Unused subs: Taylor, Dabo, Henley, Eastwood (g/k).

Referee: David Webb (County Durham).

Attendance: 13,081 (including 213 away supporters).

Nat has gone quite too,
Another great performance, 10 pts behind with a game in hand.
We have 12 matches left, all are winable, that would put us in a strong position. Our tails are up and even Mr Howe is getting excited, as he can see we are dominating matches now. LETS GO FOR THE FINAL PUSH, WE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE.

The result last night was an achievement beyond measure for a “little” side like A.F.C. Our “tiny club” now sits above some of the championship “giants” specifically one which has shipped 9 goals in it’s last two HOME games. There has never been a better time to be a Cherries fan. This coincides with me being given ten weeks of jury service, so games previously excluded by my shift work(Charlton, Birmingham, Yeovil, Leeds, Q.P.R. and Millwall as the last game,) are all there for the taking. I can’t wait!! As I said yesterday, winning creates confidence, confidence brings results. Results brings success. For us fans so used to the bottom end of “feel-good” scales this is almost too good to be true and long may it continue. A winning team really DOES make a difference.

Well done Eddie, The Team and everybody at the club. Mission Accomplished another season in the Championship guaranteed. We already have enough points but 2 more wins and 51 points, will definitely be job done. What a great first season without spending millions and getting into massive debt like some teams in our league !

Time to start saving for next years season ticket everybody. Potential away visits to Fulham, Cardiff, Palace, Orient, Brentford and Wolves, can't wait. Time to sit back and enjoy the rest of our season. PS come on Yeovil would love you to stay up.UTCIAD

Your silly comment just highlights what a high echelon thick idiot you really are.
.
I personally (smhinto) have on NO OCCASION demeaned AFCB management or the players.
.
What Oxbig and Nat1234 have posted is their business, although SOME of their posts I would agree with and are accurate.
.
Yours and others stupidity and daft commenting is one of many reasons why I have not posted for the last month or so and see very little reason to do so again, no doubt you and a number of others will be relieved at that.
.
My posts have always been constructive, looking at the alternative instead of always looking at things through rose tinted glasses. Only on this site will I praise the team and Eddie and still receive a minus -58 for doing so. Typical.
.
The club is doing very well under Howe and Tindall and we have very little to complain about.
.
My last post redflected on the fact that we have paid too much for Kermogant, that is a fact as far as I am concerned. the same applies to Rantie. (both very good players, but not worth what we have paid for them).
.
Perhaps you should examine my past posts to see exactly where I have defamed the club management and players.

Anyway for a more detailed post, last night was a great bonus.

As the season has progressed, we've gotten better and better. Firstly playing with a lot of freedom and scoring goals. To then slowly becoming more solid but still conceding and losing a little punch going forward. We then started scoring again, and have now started to shut up at the back too. At this rate of progression - who knows what we can achieve next season.

I'm just very much enjoying every game I watch at the moment, even the run of draws we had recently. We're in the best division in this country. Yes I know it's not the Premiership, but it's the most highly competitive division, with at least something of the old school football remaining, with a lot of big clubs and grounds. And the odds are stacked against us with Parachute money fueled sides.

And we're in this division playing great football with a young and evolving side of technically exciting players. And the fact that we're now becoming more consistent and solid to boot, is just a bonus.

Some people are just never happy, and certainly those looking on from other clubs won't be happy for us, but hey, we've just got to keep doing what we're doing and see where it takes us.

Me a thick idiot, I love the way you respond with well thought out comments, I must be the only one then that thinks many of your previous posts have not questioned the managements decisions, players that are performing really well this season that in your expert opinion were not up to the championship, and us fans that watch the team were far to stupid to understand what we were watching and where our team were heading, no need to reply thank you, I'm bored of you already!!!!

Oh Shminto, you never learn do you.

Demeaning (Oxford English online definition) - “Causing somebody to lose their dignity and the respect of others”.

From you earlier in the season – Grabban is definitely not up to Championship standard.

That would be the same Grabban who now has 15 goals and on goals per game so far, is on target for 20. I’d say stating a player is not up to playing in a league in which they can score at that rate was demeaning . I could pick other points (for example your comments about how we’d struggle in this league – we aren’t struggling and could well be safe before April so again, based on the meaning of the word, demeaning to the team/club). However, I can’t really be bothered with you anymore.

Your apology and acceptance that you were wrong about Grabban is accepted in advance.

It’s OK, we all know you would never really admit you were wrong about anything. Remember when you said only somebody who was “deluded” (and I quote) would think there was any chance of us being promoted before the last game of last season (oops, another “Shmintoball”).

I’m sure you’ll be back with some badly thought out badly argued case as to why everybody else is wrong and you are in fact perfect. However, your arguments are so weak as to not offer any form of quality debate so I’m going to call it quits and ignore your next load of drivel.

Yet another example of a person who does not read my posts properly.
.
My assessment of Grabban was based on the fact that he had failed to find the target on a number of occasions during our last League One campaign. At the time stating that he was not likely to be a Championship player was well justified. AT THAT TIME.
.
I have stated clearly on at least SIX OCCASIONS since then that he has proved me wrong and I am very pleased that he has. He would now be the first name of the team sheet as far as I am concerned.
.
Now would you like me to say it again for an 8th time ? or has it at last sunk in.
.
If you care to read my last reply to the the very silly abc100. I doubt that you have or at least not properly. I stated that I have NOT POSTED on here for about a month and am less likely to do again, so you will not have to worry about my next load of drivel, as you put it, anymore. Well what more can be said about this team and management, Didn't listen to the game last night but what a result. Three clean sheets in a row now Eddie saying a few weeks ago we needed to sort the defense out well he seems to have done that for sure. Now he's working on sharpening up the strike force when that happens what a team we will have (not that I'm complaining now). but putting a few more of the many chances we create think where we could be. Re building the club the right way without spending millions on has been ex prem players is the right way of doing it, getting young talented players in the development squad for a later date is the way forward. A great owner and management things are looking great at afcb. Now lets fill the ground and enjoy what we have.

As he has been having treatment in Italy, I would think probably not.

Let's hope the form continues on Saturday, though I can foresee a Boro team coming to time waste and spoil from the first minute. We should break them down eventually with the help of he mighty North Stand!

With the team now scoring goals, keeping clean sheets and picking up points it seems that we have a settled, confident First XI, particularly the back four. My only concern now is that with players returning from injury we don't "upset the apple cart" by dropping players just because another player is fit again (notably Ward for Cook). We have a confident, winning team and what is fast becoming a very "mean", settled defence, and long may it continue. Keep your first choice starting XI as it is now and we can push onward and upward - UTC!

When I posted last night following our great win this site smelled of sweet success and fragrance I came back here this afternoon the fragrance has turned into an awful stench! can anyone put a finger as to why that is!!! Who has been stirring up the proverbial?

Who gives a toss about those whose sole intention is to disagree with the majority of us on here. Just leave them be. Up the mighty Cherries
