AFC Bournemouth boss Howe: Yann has added a different dimension
Kermorgant, a £400,000 transfer window signing from Charlton, celebrated his full debut by bagging a treble during Cherries’ 5-0 rout of Doncaster on Saturday.
Howe told the Daily Echo: “We didn’t want to bring in a one-dimensional player. Although he is a big lad, he is technically very good and can play with his feet and is good with his chest. We knew he would fit our style of play, which was very important.
“It is a delicate balance because we don’t want to take away from our footballing principles. We aren’t going to launch balls up the pitch and play the percentages. Yann adds a different dimension because he can receive the ball to feet and link the play.”
Kermorgant, a regular starter and cult hero at his former club Charlton, had come off the bench in his first four games for Cherries.
Howe added: “We always had him in mind for this game and that is not me trying to be clever after the event. It was a game we had identified for him to start.
“We have played 4-3-3 away from home and Lewis Grabban has done so well in that position. But we felt this was a game which would suit Yann and I feel that is very much the way the squad is going to develop. It will be players playing in games that will suit them.
“We have a quality squad and I want to use it. I don’t just want to use 11 players and I think that is the way we are going to get the best out of everybody. There is never going to be a rigid system or personnel. We need to use the squad because it is that good. I would be foolish not to use everybody because everyone has different strengths and we require different things in different games.”
