POOLE Town could be set for a dramatic return to Poole Stadium – 20 years after the club was kicked out of its spiritual home.

Former Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell, who acquired a two-year majority share option at Dolphins last year, is working with the club’s board to find the Southern League outfit a new home.

And Mitchell has now opened talks with Poole Stadium operators Stadia UK, with discussions focusing on a new multi-purpose arena that would host the football club as well as current users Poole Speedway and Poole Greyhounds.

In a statement released to the Echo this morning, Stadia UK said: “As our respective sporting and business interests are public facing and as rumours can be damaging and cause concern to our staff and supporters, we have moved to advise everybody of our ongoing discussions and work to consider the feasibility of incorporating our three sports (soccer, speedway and greyhound racing) into a new stadium facility.

“We have an ongoing dialogue and are working through the physical restraints and technical solutions that could see a multi-purpose stadium built to house these three key sports in a facility fit for the next 25 years.

“We expect to take a further two months or so before we can reach a principle conclusion as to feasibility. Once we have reached this point and subject to it being physically and technically possible we will start the process of talking with the council and with other stakeholders.”

Mitchell, who last week quashed rumours linking him with investment in Championship side Yeovil Town, could take a controlling interest in Dolphins should the stadium discussions reach a positive conclusion.

The former Dean Court chief said: “My aim is to provide Poole Town FC with a Stadium fit for the Football League which is where we aim to be playing.

“There is historic synergy with both speedway and greyhound racing and there is no doubt that to be an economic venture, a stadium needs multiple sources of income. We are working well together and I am hopeful that we will find a way to make this happen.”

Clarke Osborne, chief executive of Stadia UK, said: “We have maintained a good dialogue with Poole Town Football Club over many years and recently, with Eddie’s involvement, this has accelerated to a point where we are investigating the technical issues involved into what is a complex development.

“We have a great deal of experience in facility design and of putting soccer, speedway and greyhound racing together inthe same complex, and it is certainly feasible in theory.”
