AFC Bournemouth: Francis's goal earns Cherries a deserved point

Bournemouth Echo: DELIGHT: Cherries celebrate Simon Francis's goal at the Reebok this afternoon DELIGHT: Cherries celebrate Simon Francis's goal at the Reebok this afternoon

SIMON Francis bagged his first goal of the season as Cherries clawed back a 2-0 deficit to claim a deserved share of the spoils from their first visit to the Reebok Stadium today.

The defender, whose only other goal for Cherries had come during a 3-1 home win over Tranmere in October 2012, netted a header to earn Eddie Howe’s men a point.

Although Bolton raced into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 32 minutes thanks to goals from Chung-Yong Lee and Lukas Jutkiewicz, they rarely threatened again as Cherries ran the show.

Lewis Grabban’s piledriver, which came just seconds after Jutkiewicz had struck, immediately halved the deficit before Cherries set about finding an equaliser.

And after Howe’s team had dominated for long periods, their efforts were rewarded when Francis headed home Ian Harte’s corner to level midway through the second half.

Cherries boss Howe made three changes to his starting line-up with defender Steve Cook drafted in to replace Elliott Ward, who was ruled out by a knee injury. Marc Pugh and Matt Ritchie also returned with Tokelo Rantie and Ryan Fraser dropping to the bench.

Midfielder Harry Arter was a concern for Cherries after turning his ankle during the warm-up. However, following an impromptu fitness test just minutes before kick-off, he declared himself fit to start.

Arter certainly showed no ill effects as he went close to opening the scoring for Cherries, his rasping left-foot strike from 25 yards flashing narrowly past the post after just three minutes.

A great block tackle by Francis denied Lee after the South Korean international had danced across the top of the 18-yard box before Chris Eagles drove a right-foot shot into the side netting.

Andrew Surman, involved in the build-up during a sweeping move after 15 minutes, missed from close range after the ball had appeared to get stuck in his feet as he prepared to pull the trigger following a Francis cross.

Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan stuck out his right hand to push the ball away from Lewis Grabban after Ritchie’s exquisite first-time pass had set the striker free on goal after 17 minutes.

Alex Baptiste scuffed an effort over the crossbar after latching on to Eagles’s low, driven centre before Lee opened the scoring when he drilled a right-foot shot into the top corner after Mark Davies’s pass had slipped him in.

Jutkiewicz doubled the hosts’ advantage after 32 minutes, the on-loan striker from Middlesbrough lifting the ball over Cherries goalkeeper Lee Camp from the edge of the box, with a suspicion of handball in the lead-up.

However, Cherries responded almost immediately when Grabban unleashed a blistering 25-yarder into the top corner, his stunning strike whistling past Bodgan to make it 2-1.

Arter fashioned the first chance of the second half, his long-range effort flying just past the base of the upright, before Cook’s far post header from an Ian Harte corner went narrowly wide.

Cherries levelled following another Harte corner midway through the second period with Francis stooping at the near post to head home his first goal of the season.

New signing Yann Kermorgant, on as a 65th-minute replacement for Pugh, almost netted with his first touch, the Frenchman’s hooked effort clawed away by Bogdan diving to his right.

Kermorgant then turned provider for fellow substitute Rantie, although Bogdan raced off his line to spread himself and block from the South Africa international after 75 minutes.

Bodgan again had to hare off his line to prevent Rantie meeting Kermorgant’s through ball before Jutkiewicz flicked an effort wide after Tim Ream’s corner had found him at the far post.

Cherries: Camp, Francis, Cook, Elphick, Harte, O’Kane, Ritchie, Arter, Surman (Rantie, 65), Pugh (Kermorgant, 65), Grabban (MacDonald, 90).

Unused subs: Pitman, Smith, Fraser, Allsop (g/k).

I'll go 1st then! Very good point away from home today, not easy going to Bolton, and 2 goals from open play, even a header from a corner! Goodness me! What will young Michael Oxbig, Super scout Shminto, moany old Jontee and the rest make of that then?

Yes come on Jontee after your comments yesterday, now we have increased the gap to Charlton do you still say we are going to be in a relegation fight? I think not.
I still don't understand why Grabs, our top scorer gets shunted out to the right when the substitutions are made in the second half. Listening on Solent I can't remember him getting a kick.

Looks like a reasonable point: we would've liked more but a good result in pretty dire February weather a long way away from home on an unfamiliar ground, - plus two goals from open play! Another point towards the 54+ we need to be comfortable at the end of the season.

A very good point as were 2-0 down. From the Solent commentary we seemed to play good football. It was good to once again hear our supporters outshouting the home fans in fact they appeared busy booing their team at the end!! Safe journey home and well done to everyone. UTCIAD

The team has developed some real fighting spirit. To come from 2-0 down is a teriffic effort and keeps us in a healthy position.
Good to see Yann settling in quickly, looks like he and TK were a real handful when they came on. Bring on Bournely.

Only three loses in the last 10 games, I don't think this will result to relegation, a disappointing point in many ways today but none the less a very big point, our remarkable season carries on. Now then, let's do a tidy little number on the Burnley front two!

Yes indeed, a great comeback from 2-0 down, and sounds like we played well again, and really deserved all 3 points.Think Yann is a strong addition to the squad. (Btw, I see that Liverpool, who only managed 2-0 against us recently in the cup, beat Arsenal 5-1 today, and Everton 4-0 a couple of matches before..) Well done Cherries, should be a good match against Burnley next week!

Is this such a good result considering Bolton have only won twice at home this season(although only lost three),seems both sides think they should have had all the points,us for not taking our chances(again),their manager thinks it was two points dropped.I understand that normally and taken in context(compare both last few seasons)this could be seen as a good result, but given the directions both clubs have taken recently, this is surely another positive indiction of where we are heading. Having seen the goals, looks like we were lucky that the ref didn`t blow to stop the game with one of our players injured ,just as Lewis was about to shoot. Our second goal is something we have been screaming out for, namely someone to get in front of defenders at corners, although a defender on the near post would most certainly have prevented a goal.

What a brilliant comeback and brave performance with great character. Going 2-0 down so early on in the game, away in terrible weather. Full credit to Grabban for taking his chance and not letting his head drop right after we went 2-0 down.
Chung-Yong Lee is pure class, he was the difference between them and us in the game at dean court and it was no surprise he and their other scorer made it hard for us.
I think that was an excellent result and like others said Yann and Rantie made a massive difference for us when they came on. We have some hard games coming up. I think we need another 3 more wins this season to be safe. I am sure we will get them.
I would love it if we signed Chung-Yong Lee, but with Ritchie, Pugh, Fraser and Coullibali we don't need him. Bolton will be forced to offload all their players because their mega debt problems. I hope they stay up this season so they can be deducted ten/fifteen points next season and secure a relegation spot.

If you woud have been there, you would have seen that there was nohing 'brilliant' about our first half performance, apart for a well taken goal by Grabban.

Not being able to get to this game can't comment on the game itself. Sounds from people actually there we started slow again ? I wonder if there are certain players in the starting lineup when this happens as it's not always the case. Listening on Solent sounded like we yet again missed guilt edge chances, one on one more than once, this happens far to often if we could cut this out I'm sure we would be around the playoffs now. All in all a good point away from home after a bad start. There's not a chance of us going down this season.
