HOSTS Harewood College completed a clean sweep of the boys’ events at the Bournemouth Indoor Rowing Championships.

Harewood’s heroics were matched by Talbot Heath who won all three of the girls’ competitions.

The popular tournament attracted a record number of entries – 13 teams from 10 schools.

Altogether, more than 200 young rowers from years 7, 8 and 9 filled the college hall for the enthralling spectacle.

A very high standard of competition was witnessed – no surprise as several of the children taking part were placed very highly at last year’s British Championships.

These included national champion Lewis Bradbury and British record holder Henry Shields – both students hailing from Harewood College.

Organised by Harewood College in partnership with British Rowing, the competition is one of six school indoor rowing qualifiers being held across the county.

Winners from each qualifier will go on to compete in the county finals on April 2, which will be held at Canford School.

The 10 schools, which took part in the Bournemouth qualifier, were the hosts Harewood College along with Avonbourne College, The Bishop of Winchester, Oak Academy, Bournemouth School for Girls, Glenmoor, Parkfield, St Peters, Talbot Heath and Winton Arts & Media College.

This year’s event followed British Rowing’s Go Race format, which sees Year 7s compete in a two-minute individual race, Year 8s in a three-minute race and four minutes for Year 9.

Individual scores were added together to find the winning teams in each year group.

Executive headteacher of Harewood College Debbie Godfrey-Phaure said: “It was a privilege to organise and hold such an exciting sporting event at our school. Everyone who took part did themselves proud and I wish all the winners luck in the county finals.”
