AFC Bournemouth: New boy Kermorgant hopes to provide focal point for Cherries

Bournemouth Echo: NEW SIGNING: AFC Bournemouth's Yann Kermorgant NEW SIGNING: AFC Bournemouth's Yann Kermorgant

DEADLINE day signing Yann Kermorgant hopes his presence in the final third can aid Cherries’ long-term progress.

The 32-year-old was today snapped up on a two-and-a-half year deal from Championship rivals Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed fee after successfully coming through a medical at Dean Court.

News of Cherries’ interest in the Addicks frontman was revealed exclusively by the Echo via Twitter and the player held talks with the Dorset club on Wednesday after Cherries’ bid, understood to be in the region of £400,000, was accepted by the Londoners.

And while the French forward admitted it was a wrench to leave the Valley Stadium, where he had been a firm fans’ favourite over the past two years, Kermorgant insisted he was relishing his latest challenge.

Explaining his decision, Cherries’ sixth January signing told the club website: “This is quite a small club but it is growing and I want to be part of the project.

“It was a very difficult decision for me and my family because we were settled in London, but these things happen in football and sometimes you have to move on. I am looking forward to my new challenge here now.

“I like the way the manager plays on the floor, the passing play is very good and it is a good project.

“I will have to speak with the manager about how he wants to use me. I know he likes my aerial ability and the team puts in a lot of crosses – maybe they need someone to make the headers.

“Bournemouth is my new club and I will do all I can to achieve the best I can.”

Subject to Football League approval, Kermorgant, who scored for Charlton at Dean Court on the opening day of the season, could feature for Cherries against league leaders and former club Leicester City tomorrow.

“We could be playing any club, but it’s my old club. It’s strange,” he added.

“Everyone knows my story at Leicester, but it will be the manager’s decision (whether I play). I have had a couple of difficult days in terms of preparation but I will do what I have to do.

“I remember scoring here in the last minute (for Charlton) when both clubs were in League One and the one this season.

"I hope to keep going and to score goals but it’s more about the team and the club.”

Welcome to the Cherries Yann!!!

I applaud the intent, vision, commitment and forward thinking of the board and management throughout this transfer window for the players brought in young and old!!! I can't remember momentum like this at the club in 40 odd years of supporting. This has to be a call to the whole town to get on board and start supporting the club as much as possible!

I thank you all for you at AFCB very hard work getting these deals done and keeping Grabbs. Now let's stick it too the F"xes tomorrow!!!!

Lots of options now with the prospect of our wingers and overlapping full backs having the chose between sliding passes for Rantie or balls into the box for the Kermit to either head in or nod down for the pacy South African to follow up on. Team guess for tomorrow (if injuries are kosher) Camp

Welcome to soggy Bournemouth Yann be assured that we do get some sunshine down here and AFCB is a sound, genuine club that you have joined. I look forward to seeing you play for us and cheer every goal you'll score.

For your information we do have some French restaurants in the area and we have regular cross channel ferries and a decent airport (even though they charge £2.50 to drive in and out) if you ever want to hop over to France!!! Up the mighty Cherries

Very funny!! He's a decent signing and I am looking forward to seeing the crosses coming in early and with speed. Perhaps we will do less passing around the box with a striker of this type. Up the cherries!

Agree, should have signed Fletch as an impact player if nothing else. Plus given him the chance to play and score in the Championship.

Is it safe to assume that as of today there will be no more talk of transfers!!!! And has anyone counted our squad and made sure no one has left by the back door!!

Pleased to see the sun shining this morning hopefully it will shine through to the afternoon and our lads give us a great display and get the three points, at the bare minimum one point even if it is to stop the gloating from certain so called AFCB fans! UTCIAD

Smhinto will try and take the credit for this!! Eddie has finally listened to me, blah blah blah! It's a very good swap, Thomas out, Kermorgant in. Well pleased to see Adam Smith back too, I used to tell my son to watch him and his energy to get up and down the pitch when he played right in front of us in the family stand a few years ago. 2 good signings with championship experience. Though someone is bound to moan of course!!!

Very pleased to see YK join us. We have needed this kind of player for a long time. Shame he’s 32, and 2.5 years is really too long at that age. But he was a wanted man and who can blame him for negotiating some security. At his age that’s probably the most important thing.
.
My only worry is how will he be used. I do hope he won’t just be an impact sub. My ideal scenario would be to play 4-4-2 with YK and Pitman starting. Unfortunately, that is a luxury Eddie cannot afford. He is committed to starting with 4-5-1 because of the defensive frailty, which the return of Smith will do nothing to improve. I had hoped this area would have been addressed in the transfer window.
.
So I hope he makes YK his lone striker and puts Grabban back in midfield which is his true position. But I hope to see Pitman coming on much earlier if we end up chasing the game. Unfortunately I fear we will be seeing too much of Rantie. Edie’s problem here is that if TK doesn’t feature, it is tantamount to admitting he was a waste of money, which of course he was.
