THERE was a clean sweep of victories for Poole ABC juniors at the club’s home show at the Hamworthy Social Club.

Their seven youngsters won every bout on the bill as the hosts chalked up eight wins out of 10 contests in the Knockout Tournament.

The night’s youngest Poole boxer Dane Smith, 12, got the show off to a flying start when he used all his skills and fitness to stop his opponent in the third round.

Poole team-mate Connor Edwards, 14, then boxed his way through to a points decision, using his stiff jab and straight right to win each round.

There were also debuts for Poole teenagers Shane Selby, 14, and Jeremy Magdrilia, 13. Both boxers emerged victorious by using their contrasting styles to maximum effect.

In the fifth junior bout, Tom Evans, 13, set off at a very high pace before settling down and landing some classy shots, forcing the referee to stop the contest in the third round.

The penultimate fight was completed in spectacular fashion by 15-year-old George Schwarzin, who wasted no time in stamping his authority on his contest.

Schwarzin’s power behind his quick shots was quickly felt by his opponent and drew the earliest finish of the night as the referee intervened halfway through the first round.

Completing the magnificent seven for Poole was 15-year-old Darren Piper who boxed with a cool head and purposeful punches. Piper’s solid defence and better choice of shots helped him take the points victory.

Delighted Poole coach Kevin Thorniley said: “We are so proud of the way the lads are putting all their hard work and effort from the gym into use at a competitive level.

“There is a real buzz around the club now, not only from the boxers, but by the support we get too. We feel we are going from strength to strength.”

Meanwhile, Poole’s national ABA novice champion Lee Cutler took a huge step up in class by taking on Brad Pauls (Golden Ring) who is rated as one of the top four amongst his peers.

Despite losing on a points decision, 18-year-old Cutler showed a lot of potential in a fight that could have gone either way.

“Lee can take a lot of positives from the fight and has shown he belongs in the open class elite division having boxed three, three minute rounds without a head guard for the first time,” added Thorniley.

In the two other senior bouts, Poole’s Dan Ford lost on points in a closely-fought contest, while team-mate Paul Giles stepped into the ring for the first time in seven years to earn an impressive victory.
