AFC Bournemouth: Smith completes Cherries switch

Bournemouth Echo: DEAL: Adam Smith has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract at Dean Court DEAL: Adam Smith has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract at Dean Court

CHERRIES boss Eddie Howe welcomed the arrival of Adam Smith and said the defender had made a “brave decision” to leave Premier League Tottenham.

Smith today completed his move from White Hart Lane when he joined Cherries on a three-and-a-half year deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £250,000.

The 22-year-old played under Howe during a youth loan at Dean Court in 2010-11 and lined up in Cherries’ League One play-off semi-final against Huddersfield.

Howe said: “We are really pleased to bring him in permanently. Our wish is always to sign young talent, develop it and make it better and I think Adam certainly fits that profile.

“A year ago, he was England under-21s’ regular right-back so that shows what a good player he is. Hopefully, he can develop and get better with us over time and we are delighted to add to him to our squad, not just as a player because he also fits what we are looking for personality-wise. He is a good lad, he works hard at his game and shows the right attitude.

“We know Adam from our first spell here and I think that is really important. When you get to work with players, you get to know their strengths and we certainly know what Adam can bring us. He fits the right age profile and is someone we can really enjoy working with for the long term. He is going to be a good addition to the squad.”

Asked about Smith putting down some firm roots following no fewer than seven loan spells in his career, Howe replied: “A player can sometimes be loaned out very much for the benefit of him and his career and those early loans were really important for him and enabled him to get into this position.

“But there comes a time when, if you can’t see a future at the club you are at then you do have to look to move permanently. I think Adam will be a reluctant leaver of Tottenham for obvious reasons. When you have been associated with a club for such a long time, it can be difficult to move.

“I think he has made a brave decision and, hopefully, it turns out to be a good one for him and his career. Establishing a link with a new club will be beneficial for him and, hopefully, he will enjoy his time with us.”

Cherries fended off interest from several clubs to secure Smith’s services, with the 11-times capped England under-21 international admitting his decision had been swayed by the opportunity to again work with Howe and his staff.

Howe said: “I think he sees the way the club is going and the ambition within the club, which is important when you leave somewhere like Tottenham. Most importantly for Adam, he needs a club which plays a style of football that fits him and his game.

“Whenever he decided to leave Tottenham, it needed to be to a club that played to his strengths. Hopefully, we tick those boxes and we can see the best of him here.”

If Smith was registered in time, he could be available for tonight’s visit of Huddersfield although it remains to be seen whether or not he will be involved.

Francis must be feeling hard done by. But has to admit his crossing of the ball, in particular, has been left wanting recently.

From what I remember of Adam he doesn't mind attacking the opposition, so should create some healthy competition for right back.

Looking forward to some Tuesday night football.

Francis has done a great job so far and Smith will only make him work harder to keep the shirt. Don't forget, Franny's just shy of 29 so I see Smith being more of a long term investment, but at the same time he's Championship ready so Eddie won't be afraid to chuck him in there if Franny's not doing too well.

Welcome signing. £250,000 seems to be a bargain for U21 England player when you compare prices some players are sold for. He has experience playing in the championship so has moved on from the player he was when he first played for us and he was more than useful during his first spell here. Very positive move by Eddie.
Now for a forward please.

Yes it is a great price for such a promising talent. that has experience at this level.

If we can get a decent striker to bang in a few goals then we will be fine, as we have an excellent team that desperately needs someone to bang the goals in

Excellent signing in a position that needed cover. A great price to for a championship ready player. Cannot play tonight as not signed in time probably a good thing needs a few training sessions to blend in with our style of play. A goal poacher now then lets see how far up the league we can Finnish this season.

I believe that another reason for his signing is that he can play on both sides so in which case he can also operate at both right and left back positions.
.
In addition, he has played in centre midfield, so his adaptablity may well be a factor and not necessarily to give Francis direct competition.

Yes a double signing of Wiggins and Kermorgant .

Wiggins will obviously divide opinion with regard to the manner in which he left but nevertheless he is still a good player and arguably only left because Eddie did. I personally would not have a problem in welcoming him back into the fold.

Going to be a very interesting few days.....

Also there is a worrying aspect to all this. Does this mean that Daniels is on his way??

No I did not believe that all but just that we are using this window to improve the squad. Perhaps the Wiggins deal has just become a possible whilst discussing the Kermorgant one and the club think that it is the right move forward.

With the addition of Wiggins and Smith we have excellent cover/competition in both the right and left back positions, given that Francis and Daniels will be staying

If Charlton are selling their better players could it mean that they are committed to relegation and re-grouping in League One, possibly under a new manager. If so, then there might only be two relegation places to avoid this season - UTC!

Well apparently Chris Powell is not a happy chappy down at The Valley and maybe we are making a few purchases in the January Sales whilst Charlton are putting there assets up for sale.

Plenty to smile about with this! Competition/cover for Francis has been missing for a while, but this also means that Smith could play with the option of using Francis as another centre back. Keep up the good work Eddie! UTC

sdlay2 you beat me to it !!!. I was just about to say similar to you that if we had a run of injuries to 2 out of our 3 centrebacks then 6ft 2" Francis could operate as a makeshift centreback,as I understand he has played that position before and now we have cover at rightback with England under21 Adam Smith. £250,000 seems a steal at todays prices and Eddie's done a bit of wheeling & dealing in the "Harry" mould.
We will have to wait and see if Yann Kormagant and Rhoys Wiggins join from Charlton and at what cost. Wiggins I guess will be a replacement for Harte ( if he does come to DC ??) as Harte's contract was only 1 year (wasn't it ??).

Revenge tonight against Huddersfield would be sweet in answer to the 5-1 thumping we got up there. Come on you reds !!!!. UTC
