AFC Bournemouth: Arter relishes close encounter with star Gerrard

CHERRIES MIDFIELDER: Harry Arter

CHERRIES MIDFIELDER: Harry Arter

HARRY Arter is determined to learn from Steven Gerrard as he prepares to share a stage with “one of the best midfielders of my generation”.

The Cherries star could be thrown into an engine-room bat-tle with the England captain when Eddie Howe’s men host Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round.

Gerrard, twice a winner of the competition with the Reds during his illustrious career, could feature when Liverpool visit Dean Court on Saturday (12.45pm).

Should he line up for the Premier League giants, it would hand Arter the chance to lock horns with a player he has always followed closely.

And Arter, 24, admitted it would be a great test of his credentials if he had the opportunity to showcase his skills against the Anfield hero.

Arter told the Daily Echo: “I have watched Gerrard since I was a kid and he is someone I have always looked up to as a player. He is one of the best midfielders of my generation.

“If he plays, it will be really good to test myself against him and I am sure I will try to learn as much as I can from him in the 90 minutes I am up against him.

“When I was growing up, he was quite young and broke into the Liverpool team. From a young age, he has been one of England’s best midfielders.

“Being a midfielder myself, he is someone I have always looked up to. Although we play a little bit differently, he is someone I try to watch as much as I can and learn as much as I can from him. If he plays against us on Saturday, I could see him close up and it would be a really good test to play against him.”

Arter believes that Cherries have grown – both individually and collectively – since regularly plying their trade in the second tier of English football.

And he is hoping Howe’s Championship outfit will be able to show that improvement. Arter added: “In our first season in the Championship, it was important to become better players and become a better team. Without doubt, we have done that.

“Performances have definitely improved – take last Saturday as an example. In August, we lost 6-1 against Watford and, on Saturday, we outclassed them. On another day, we would have scored three or four goals.

“Without doubt, the team has come a long way and, for the rest of the season, I can only expect us to get better.

"Going into next season, the lads will be really confident.”

I agree with your team selection North stand Badger if Edddie goes 4141 as he has done recently to give more solidity to the midfield and defence but personally I would like him to have a "right go" with a 442 with both Rantie and Grabban up front causing Skertel and Toure trouble with their pace running at them or in behind them. Whilst Fraser's pace and trickery could cause Johnson problems( if playing?) If Eddie does play 442 he would probably prefer the stability and defensive quality of Pugh, having to drop one of the three midfield players.
I think EH may well start 451 keep it tight and see if we can catch them on a break but may change to 442 later if he feels he needs to change his tactics.
I think Surman will get to start with Mac on the bench, with Pitman, Rantie, Pugh or Fraser (?) with Elphick & Allsop.
Whatever Eddie decides, the team have got to give it everything and respect but not fear Liverpool . "He who dares wins" lads ,so go for on Saturday at DC as you probably won't get a second chance in a reply at Anfield ( although the money would be handy !!). The Cherries FA Cup Giant killers of the 1950's did it all at the first attempt, you rarely get a second. UTC.

As mentioned in one or two posts above I very much hope that Arter will let his skill do the talking, keep his head down and do the job he is paid to do. Leave the ranting and raving to us, the supporters, after all the ref cannot send us off!!! I also hope that the team will be relaxed and not daunted by the opposition, play a good game and win or lose hold their heads up high.

Come on youuuuuuuuuuuu Reds

Thanks for the info Smhinto, will have a look see what it says on Vital. Is this the same right back we had from Spurs a couple of seasons ago in Eddie's first spell when we were pushing for play off place ??. We need over at right back if Francis gets injured as we have no specialist cover in that position. UTC.

PS Trying to touch type on a 7" tablet is driving me mad. Above should read, we need cover at right back.

I thought that he was a very decent right back when we had him on loan back in 2010 - 2011 season and he played 38 games for us.. He has since been on loan at Leeds, Millwall and most recently Derby.

Would provide excellent back from Francis and so would be a great possibility without forking out a load of money :)

i would pick the same team, but possibly change surman for rantie and play rantie behind grabban or alongside him. I think Rantie could hurt their defence and would possibly win a pen or get a defender sent off with his pace and trickery. I'm excited about the game now, a draw would e better than a win

I agree, only problem is that macca spends so much time injured, he will play a few games and play well but then miss 6 or 7 so that is why I reckon Eddie sticks with Surman

I have been employed as an assessor for the last 17 years. If my judgement was faulty I would not have lasted long. I recently received two calls one from Lennie Lawrence and one fron Steve Kember thanking me for my input on recent oppostion assessments completed for them. i do not recall knocking our club and players. I just give an opinion on their abilities. I am so pleased that Grabban has proved me wrong. But my opinion at the time was based on the fact that he was not scoring too often in League One. He has come on leaps and bounds no question about that.

My recent posts concerning the fact that we don't have any options to change out style fo pla still stands, which I would say is a sensible and valid comment, but look at the flak I rceived for pointing out something that is true. The mind just boggles.
