AFC Bournemouth: Surman looks to avoid another FA Cup calamity

LOAN star Andrew Surman is determined to help Cherries bounce back against Burton Albion – and avoid becoming the victim of another FA Cup giant-killing.

The central midfielder knows all about the dangers of facing lower-league opposition after enduring a fourth round tie to forget with Norwich City last season.

Surman and his Premier League colleagues were on the receiving end when Scott Rendell netted to hand Conference club Luton a shock 1-0 win at Carrow Road.

Ex-Southampton ace Surman will be aiming to banish that memory by featuring in a cup victory when Cherries host the in-form Brewers tomorrow (7.45pm).

Cherries and Burton also have the added incentive of a lucrative televised home showdown with Liverpool awaiting the winners in the fourth round on January 25.

The Brewers will arrive for the rearranged Dean Court clash in the League Two promotion places and on the back of an 11-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

And Surman says Cherries must adopt the right approach as they attempt to immediately respond following their 3-0 Championship defeat at Wigan on Saturday.

He told the Daily Echo: “It is always dangerous. I am sure everyone says it but teams from the lower leagues raise their game against the teams above them.

“If you are not on it, they will take you apart. You have to be careful. I found out first hand last season. Luton came to Norwich and played very well. We weren’t at it and they beat us 1-0.

“You have to be very careful but as long as we go into the game with the right mental attitude and carry on doing the things we do week in, week out in the league then we are positive about the game.

“I haven’t got that far in the competition. There are probably not great memories for me but, hopefully, we can turn that round tomorrow.”

Cherries and Burton will be playing for £67,500 in prize money as well as the chance to test themselves against Premier League giants Liverpool.

Surman said: “We are trying not to look too far ahead. If we beat Burton, it is a great incentive, but we don’t want to look too much further ahead than tomorrow’s game.”

Surman made his eighth successive start for Cherries at Wigan and he is hoping Eddie Howe’s men can quickly put that loss behind them.

The 27-year-old added: “In the past few games, we had set our standards high and we didn’t quite reach those standards on Saturday but we know that we can get back up there and, hopefully, that will start again tomorrow.

“We went into Saturday’s game with a lot of confidence and, unfortunately, couldn’t keep our unbeaten run going. It was disappointing but we have to pick ourselves up now.”

Howe should put his best possible side out against a side unbeaten in 11. Our record of 3 wins in 13 and having the second worst defensive record in the league speaks for itself. At least a win against a League 2 side with the prospect of playing Liverpool reserves will give the fans something to cheer about. Regards.

Burton are clearly in some good form and will need some respect, but prior to Wigan we were playing the best football of our season, and went unbeaten over the Christmas period, probably the most chaotic and demanding period of the season in terms of games in a short time frame.

That period bagged us valuable points and moved us away from those real struggles. 9 points away from relegation and 9 from play-offs, can't get more middle of the road than that. It should allow us to play with a little freedom in this cup.

There's some players who've played a lot of games just recently and could probably do with sitting on the bench, so maybe 2/3 changes, but nothing drastic. Wouldn't mind seeing Pitman and Rantie together, Grabban has worked his backside off just recently. Ritchie hasn't long been fit, could perhaps do with a breather.

Yes you are, but for the sake of £10 isn't it worth you keeping them in case you need the stub for a potential tie against Liverpool?

I agree with the general jist of this and other threads that it would good to see TK upfront with Brett (or even Wes T?) but definitely need Grabban on the bench and ready. We certainly need to show BA ‘due’ respect but we are two leagues above them and if we start with one up-front for this game it will make us look far to cautious and probably make me cringe!

Whilst on the Rantie subject from the commentary it sounded like he energised us somewhat on Saturday, so well done TK and despite some criticism from myself and others would certainly like to see him succeed.

My desire as I guess are the desire of many of my fellow supporters (there are exceptions!) is for us to win tomorrow but we all know the unpredictability of the game and I would not be too upset if Burton Albion played better than us and ended up winners. I will certainly be shouting and supporting our team and hope every player will have a good game. UTCIAD

The prize should be enough to stimulate whichever 11 Eddie chooses, they could be playing for a place against Liverpool! Let's hope, if we win, L'pool underestimate us and put out a weakened team themselves. Could do without seeing Suarez,Sturridge and Stirling playing, though I'm sure Tommy would have Suarez in his pocket for 90 minutes! As would O'kane on Gerrard.

I hope we win tomorrow but if we do lets have as many of the real Liverpool team as possible or we might as well have drawn Rochdale no offence hope they do ok but what a great day if we see the Liverpool first team. Hope we attract some new supporters I watch Sky but its not as good as going to the game at DC or even better seeing us win away

How about Liverpool fielding a weakened side and we hold on for a draw, that would help the club wouldn't it?

This is how to deal with the enemies on here,
Ie oxpig, smdimlo etc etc
Ignore whatever they say. They are probably only insulting you because they are jealous. No matter what they say, it can’t offend you unless you let it. Just remember when they say something nasty to you, they want you to react. So pretend you didn’t hear it. Don’t acknowledge them or give them any attention for it. If they continue insulting you or bothering you in any way, walk away from them. Don’t look at them or talk to them; just walk away. After a few times of you doing this they will probably get bored and go away
