CAPTAIN Dan Cann set his sights on another Poole Town title tilt after tasting derby-day delight at Weymouth.

Goalscorer Cann netted the opener to put the Dolphins on course for a convincing 3-0 away win over their Dorset rivals today.

Poole made it a Boxing Day to remember by serving up a dominant display against the Terras in front of a bumper 1,065-strong crowd.

Cann’s 36th-minute strike was followed by second-half efforts from Ekow Elliott and Marvin Brooks as Poole claimed their fifth successive Southern League win.

The Dolphins, who have now gone eight matches without defeat, climbed to fourth in the Premier Division and they have games in hand on every team above them.

Poole are no strangers to silverware and followed their hugely successful spell in the Wessex League by winning Southern Division One South & West last term.

And skipper Cann, 27, believes Poole could add to that collection this season.

The frontman told the Daily Echo: “We are there and we have got up a good head of steam. We still have those games in hand and we have got to win them.

“With the way we are playing and how the side is coming together, I think we are looking pretty strong.

“If we were to win our games in hand, we would go a point behind Hemel Hempstead and we still have to play them twice.

“If we could then get a win and a draw from those games, we could mount a charge and push for that top spot.”

Cann says the mentality demanded by boss Tom Killick could prove a key factor.

He said: “Tommy has always instilled in us a winning mentality and the players he gets in have always had that.

“If we lose a game, it is the worst place to be because everyone hates it. That is fantastic.

“We have also got some quality players and fit lads, which can also play a major part in it.”

Cann was speaking after expressing his delight at defeating rivals Weymouth. He said: “It was a good result.

“In all honesty, I thought we made them look pretty average, considering at the start of the season how close we were and how much of a challenge we thought Weymouth would put up. It was quite a big margin.”

Asked about his goal, Cann added: “Tommy always says I am a scorer of good goals rather than a lot of goals.

“I am trying to add more to my game and to stay more central. I am really happy.”
