PROMOTER Barrie Cox has described as “a massive coup” bringing together a quartet of world champions for a Dorset darts extravaganza.

Cox has booked golden greats Eric Bristow, John Lowe, Andy Fordham and Keith Deller for a one-off Champions’ League event on Saturday, March 1.

The four, who have won 10 world titles between them, will take to the oche at Hoburne Park near Christchurch for what is expected to be a sell-out.

Bristow, affectionately known as the Crafty Cockney, helped transform the sport in the 1980s and was awarded the MBE for his services to darts in 1989.

The 55-year-old, who no longer plays competitively, hit the headlines last year when he came fourth in the reality show I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here.

Bristow, still one of the biggest names in the sport, won the world title on no fewer than five occasions and will parade the trophy at Hoburne after being allowed to keep it.

Organiser Cox told the Daily Echo: “To get four legends under the same roof in Dorset is some feat and it promises to be a memorable evening.

“Eric Bristow is one of the most well-known and well-respected players in the world of darts and he is a massive pull on his own.

“Bringing together all four for one event will give the Dorset darting fraternity an opportunity to watch some of the greats of the game on their own doorstep.

“The sport continues to be huge, both on television and with live audiences, and these four guys were there at the start of the boom.

“During the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, these guys helped put darts on the map and they were, and still are, box office.”

Lowe is one of only five players to have won the World Championship three times – in 1979, 1987 and 1993 – and the first to triumph in three separate decades.

The 67-year-old from Derbyshire has been in the game for 40 years and, in 1984, was the first player to hit a televised nine-dart finish.

Fordham, who is known as the Viking, won the 2004 BDO World Championship and the 1999 Winmau World Masters, while Deller won the Embassy World title in 1983.

Deller was the first qualifier to win the championship and his victory over Bristow in the final was the biggest upset in the history of the competition.

And in beating Lowe in the quarter-finals and the late Jocky Wilson in the last four, Deller became the only player to defeat the world’s top three in the World Championships.

Silver tickets, priced at £15, are available from Barrie Cox on 07947 503498, while gold tickets have already sold out. The event is strictly advanced purchase entry only.
