CHERRIES manager Eddie Howe was today expected to make a final check on trialist Danny Morrissey before deciding whether to pursue his interest in the striker.

Morrissey has spent the week training with Cherries and caught the eye when he netted the only goal in a reserve team friendly against a star-studded QPR line-up on Tuesday.

The frontman, who today celebrates his 20th birthday, has also been linked with Cherries’ Championship rivals Huddersfield after starring for League of Ireland outfit Cork City.

Morrissey progressed through the ranks at Cork and the Terriers were reportedly on the verge of tabling a six-figure offer for him after watching him in action against Shelbourne earlier this season.

Republic of Ireland assistant boss Roy Keane was among the crowd to see Morrissey help Cork complete their league campaign with a victory over champions St Patrick’s Athletic in October.

A pacy forward, Morrissey has already drawn comparisons with Republic of Ireland and West Brom striker Shane Long who was plucked by Reading from Cork City in 2005.

Cherries boss Howe told the Daily Echo last night: “He was someone we were made aware of so we said we would have a look. He has remained with us and is training this week so we will have a closer look.

“It is a case of just seeing how it goes in the next few days. He did well in the reserve game. He scored, worked incredibly hard and showed some good touches. We will have to try to make a quick assessment on him.”
