MANAGER Graham Kemp reckons Christmas has come early for Hamworthy United after snapping up the Wessex League’s answer to Santa Claus – veteran coach John Macey.

A trusted member of Kemp’s backroom staff at Christchurch, Macey decided to swap Hurn Bridge for the County Ground this week after initially staying on under Priory’s summer appointment Michael Cuffie.

And Kemp, who takes charge of his first Hammers match at home to Brockenhurst tomorrow (3pm), admitted his coaching coup had a festive feel.

“John is brilliant,” said Kemp. “He is great to have around because he just relaxes everyone. Whether it’s me or the players, he brings calmness to situations when you need it most.

“He’s a bit like Father Christmas, a very old fashioned character who has lots of ideas. He’s everyone’s favourite grandad.”

Christchurch boss Cuffie confirmed he would be seeking a replacement for Macey and said: “When someone like John leaves, it is always a big loss but he was the last of the Graham Kemp era and this allows me to put my own stamp on the club, which is not such a bad thing.”

Hamworthy are without suspended duo Aaron Stacey and Aaron Corby this weekend, although new signings Russell Cook, Billy Walker and goalkeeper Nick Thomas will feature.

Christchurch quartet Marcus Cullen, Connor Doe, Marc Fairbrother and Gareth Barnes could be fit to start Priory’s home match with Moneyfields (3pm) after playing no part in Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Blackfield & Langley.

Elsewhere in the Wessex Premier, two rival bosses moved to quash speculation over their own players joining Kemp’s revolution.

Manager Ken Vaughan admitted he was “relieved” that 10-goal top scorer Martin Warren had pledged his future to Bournemouth Poppies.

Meanwhile, Verwood boss Adie Arnold expects defender Matt Oldring to stay put despite an approach from Hamworthy.

Poppies travel to Blackfield & Langley while Potters, who drew 2-2 with AFC Portchester at Potterne Park on Wednesday, make the trip to Fawley (both 3pm).
