Pirates: Ford planning to make Blue Riband a permanent fixture
PIRATES chief Matt Ford revealed his plans to make the Poole Blue Riband a permanent fixture on the speedway calendar after bringing back the meeting.
The popular showpiece was formerly an annual event and the list of past winners includes such legends as Malcolm Simmons, Craig Boyce and Tony Rickardsson.
And after overseeing its return, Pirates promoter Ford confirmed that he hoped to continue the Poole Blue Riband on a regular basis.
Ford told the Daily Echo: “The history of the Blue Riband has been huge for so long now but, unfortunately, timings have not been right to hold it in the past, such as having busy seasons and not being able to fit it in.
“This year, we thought we might be finished by September but, as it turned out, we were very happily involved until mid October.
“It was great to be able to bring the meeting back to the public of Poole. When something drops off the calendar for a long time, a lot of people won’t even know about it or its history. That is a bit of a shame so I think we have to build this meeting back up again and it could take a few years.
“It is quite an expensive meeting to run but this is an event which I am not going to give up on. I am hoping to have it back and make it a special date in the calendar every year.”
Meanwhile, Pirates number one Ward is likely to start as the hot favourite when he lines up as the club’s sole representative in tonight’s Elite League Riders’ Championship at Swindon (6pm).
