Poole Pirates: Boyce to be honoured at return of the Blue Riband
PROMOTER Matt Ford has revealed that Pirates plan to honour club legend Craig Boyce at the prestigious Poole Blue Riband tonight.
After a lengthy absence, the popular individual meeting returns to the racing calendar at Wimborne Road (7.30pm).
And as well as watching a top-class line-up battling for the title, supporters will get the chance to bid a fond farewell to Pirates’ record point-scorer Boyce.
The Australian, whose tally of 4,498 Poole points is unlikely to ever be beaten, first donned the skull and crossbones in 1988.
He will be presented to the Blue Riband crowd ahead of his permanent move to live in Sydney in December.
Ford told the Daily Echo: “Boycie is coming down so it will be a farewell to the biggest Pirates legend of all time. It will be great to honour him.”
The star-studded Blue Riband field is headlined by Pirates captain Darcy Ward, two-times global champion Greg Hancock and current world number three Niels Kristian-Iversen.
A host of popular former Poole stars – led by the likes of Pedersen, Krzyzstof Kasprzak and Davey Watt – will also be aiming to add their name to an illustrious Blue Riband roll of honour which includes four-times winner Malcolm Simmons, Boyce and Tony Rickardsson.
Ford added: “It is a really competitive field and I have even had riders phoning me to try to get into the Blue Riband.”
Entry is £18 for adults, £15 OAPs, £4 children and admission is free for under-fives.
Following last night's Elite League title triumph, Pirates' current crop of riders are also expected to parade the trophy in front of the home faithful.
Poole Blue Riband 2014 line-up: Hans Andersen, Troy Batchelor, Josh Grajczonek, Greg Hancock, Chris Harris, Niels-Kristian Iversen, Tomas H Jonasson, Krzyzstof Kasprzak, Peter Kildemand, Danny King, Bjarne Pedersen, Rory Schlein, Adam Skornicki, Darcy Ward, Davey Watt, Cameron Woodward.
