Ward hails Hancock following Pirates' epic semi-final win
Two-times world champion Hancock demonstrated his class to deliver a 13-point haul in Poole’s thrilling semi-final second leg win over Swindon.
Ward, leading the team in the absence of injured captain Chris Holder, also played a crucial role by hammering home 13 paid 14 as Pirates triumphed 55-38.
That victory saw the Dorset outfit overturn Swindon’s 10-point advantage to secure a 97-90 aggregate success and book a silverware showdown with Birmingham.
Ward told the Daily Echo: “Greg is the master of the team. Micky Dyer was down and Greg got in there and fired him up.
“It was crucial to get a 5-1 in heat 13 and we did it.
“I think they (Swindon) might have thought they had it in the bag a little more than they should have but, in saying that, we knew it was going to be tough and that it would come down to the last races. I thought Swindon were a little bit stronger but we showed that we have got good riders.
“Our goal was just to get to the play-offs and we knew that Swindon were a good team and that it was not going to be easy. What a job from the Pirates.”
Pirates will now face Birmingham over two legs to decide the destination of the Elite League title, with Poole hosting their rivals on Monday before the return fixture at Perry Barr the following Monday.
