Poole Pirates chief Matt Ford tells supporters: You can boost our play-off bid
PROMOTER Matt Ford has issued a plea to Pirates supporters ahead of Monday’s all-or-nothing semi-final showdown: We need you more than ever.
Ford is urging the Wimborne Road faithful to help inspire a memorable Pirates fightback – by pumping up the volume for the visit of arch rivals Swindon.
Poole will be bidding to overturn a 10-point deficit from the first leg at Blunsdon when they entertain the Robins in a repeat of last year’s Elite League grand final.
And with Neil Middleditch’s men facing a mountain to climb following their 52-42 defeat last Monday, Ford believes the crowd could boost Poole’s chances.
The Pirates chief told the club website: “We have staged some memorable meetings down the years and the Poole supporters will play a key part in proceedings.
“The greater level of encouragement there is for the riders, the more inspired they are. There have been some terrific recoveries in previous years at Wimborne Road, all inspired by a brilliant atmosphere from the terraces.
“If ever we have needed that unique Poole Pirates roar to reverberate round Wimborne Road, it will be on Monday.”
Pirates battled their way into the play-offs following a dreadful start to a season which has been severely hampered by injury problems.
Team manager Middleditch said: “It would be an absolute dream to make the final again. We have enjoyed some great times at Wimborne Road, but I don’t think there would be much to top making the finals this year, given the cards we have been dealt from March onwards.”
Gates open at 6.15pm ahead of tapes-up at 7.30pm on Monday, with a big screen at Wimborne Road showing the other semi-final between Birmingham and Wolves.
