AFC Bournemouth: Tokelo Rantie says he can handle weight of expectation
NEW recruit Tokelo Rantie is adamant he will handle the weight of expectation after becoming Cherries’ record signing.
Rantie last week agreed terms on a four-year deal after Cherries had shattered their previous highest transfer fee to sign him from Malmo.
Cherries saw off strong competition from a host of clubs to secure the services of the 22-year-old – for what the club reported as an undisclosed fee.
Rantie, who is currently in South Africa preparing for Bafana Bafana’s World Cup qualifier against Botswana on Saturday, has said he is relishing plying his trade in England.
“I personally believe that it is a great move for me and my career,” Rantie told South African website Eye Witness News. “We all know what players can learn in England.
“It is a great league and, hopefully, I will manage to do the same thing that I have been doing for Malmö.
“I don’t feel any pressure at all. I believe if you feel any pressure, you won’t be able to perform. The pressure will always be there but I can control it.”
Cherries officially put the finishing touches to their move for Rantie on Monday after the striker had surprisingly turned out for Malmo on Sunday.
Rantie, whose signing had been announced by both clubs last week, came on as a second-half substitute during Malmo’s 1-1 draw with Osters in the Swedish top flight.
He was still registered to Malmo as Cherries had been reluctant to part with any funds until after the outcome of a work permit hearing had been known.
Cherries deposited the transfer fee with Malmo on Monday before Rantie’s international clearance was received by the club yesterday, as revealed exclusively by the Daily Echo.
However, Rantie still requires a visa and is expected to complete the necessary paperwork during his time in Sweden and South Africa before joining Cherries for training at the start of next week.
