CHAIRMAN Geoff Allen has revealed that Wessex could be set to embark on a European adventure – but only if they can attract financial backing.

The Dorset-based club’s senior men’s team may bid to continue their success on the continent after achieving a memorable double this season.

Wessex LeAF BU won the Division One title and promotion to the Super 8s – volleyball’s top flight in England – during an impressive campaign.

They added the National Cup to their trophy collection following a convincing victory over favourites Team Northumbria last month.

Wessex, who won 13 of their 14 league matches this term, could get the green light to play in Europe thanks to those triumphs.

And chairman Allen says they would be keen to take that opportunity – but admits they will need to find more sponsorship to make it possible.

Allen told the Daily Echo: “I think winning the cup qualifies us for European competition.

“What we need now are sponsors. We would like to play in European cup competition but that would require backing.”

Poole’s Team GB ace Dan Hunter returned from a spell abroad in professional volleyball to captain Wessex to double glory.

Allen added: “The season has gone way beyond our expectations. We knew that by gaining Dan Hunter and Ben Pipes (London 2012 Olympians), we were going to have a very strong team and would be going for promotion. But to win 3-0 against the top three teams in the Super 8s demonstrates the quality in the squad.

“The key for us now is to make sure we can keep that quality.”

Wessex are hoping to attract more sponsors. For further information, email wessex4vb@btinternet.com or call 07799 267070.
