Cherries: Defender Daniels feared his season was over

COMEBACK king Charlie Daniels has admitted he feared his chances of featuring in Cherries’ promotion push had all but bitten the dust.

Daniels made a dramatic return in Cherries’ 1-0 win over Oldham on Saturday – starring at Boundary Park despite having not trained for eight weeks.

The 26-year-old left-back, a key figure in the club’s long unbeaten run under Eddie Howe, finally succumbed to a persistent foot injury in January.

And after Daniels had initially failed to respond to treatment and been seen by a specialist, there were concerns his season may have come to a premature end.

But he recovered following a period of rest and was restored to the starting line-up against the Latics, a move boss Howe admitted had been “a bit of a punt”.

Daniels, who was replaced by Matt Ritchie after 73 minutes, told the Daily Echo: “The manager told me on Friday that I was going to start so my mind-set was right. I found out on Thursday that I would be travelling but thought I might be on the bench.

“I was a bit skeptical at first but, as soon as the game starts, you forget how long you have been out and soon get back into your natural rhythm. We had been aiming for 60 to 70 minutes and, fortunately, I got that far. I got through as much as I could although I did start to feel a bit leggy towards the end. I felt fine and so did my foot. I didn’t think I was naturally fit but, apparently, I am!”

Daniels, who missed 10 games, added: “It was a tough eight weeks and I was very frustrated. I have never before experienced an injury where I have been out for so long. I broke my foot last season but was only out for three or four weeks.

“I thought I might have needed an operation and that would have been the end of my season. I couldn’t do anything about it and we had tried everything we could. I was then advised to rest for three to four weeks to see if the bone would fuse.

“It was the last hope and, fortunately, it did the trick. Everything was fine and it repaired itself. I started jogging a couple of weeks ago and then started sprinting a few days ago. It was a bonus to be involved against Oldham and, if selected, it will be a bonus to feature in the last seven games. I am hoping it stays fine and I can kick on.”

My Team for Saturday,
Allsopp,Francis,Cook
,Elphick,Daniels,Pug
h,Arter,O Kane, Ritchie,Pitman,Grabb
an, although tempted by Tubbs starting. Either way this team will destroy most of the opposition left this season. Automatic is still on. Doncaster are not great and Sheffield have imploded.

Looking at what we have left, I can see us winning all of them, especially with Daniels and Elphick back. Daniels in particular has been really missed due to not only his defensive qualities but moreover his superb offensive relationship with Pugh.

Bury (H) - 23/03
Colchester (A) - 29/03
Scunthorpe (H) - 01/04
Notts County (H) - 06/04
Shrewsbury (A) - 13/04
Carlisle (H) - 20/04
Tranmere (A) - 27/04

If we could win them all or the majority of them, then automatic promotion is very much on.

Not saying that it is going to be easy at all but we are a better team with the players we have available than all our remaining 7 opponents.

All very exciting :)

Apparently Elphick is in better shape than Daniels but Eddie just decided to stick with Cook and Seabourne on Saturday.

Therefore, we could have a central partnership of Cook and Elphick for Bury this Saturday if Eddie wants to.

Yes automatic is clearer on although i quite fancy a day at Wembley as I remember Cardiff being being one of the best days of my life. I also predict the true Bournemouth fans will rise up and there will be a war against the doom mongers and trolls and they will be sent packing and will return to their bunkers in Swindon and Lincolnshire etc etc

I agree with your team selection but would be tempted to play Tubbs instead of Grabban. Grabban has had a good season for us but has struggled a bit in the last few games.
Like Pitman, he may benefit from warming the bench for a couple of games.

The 5 - 2 over Lincoln City at Cardiff in 2002 will live with me forever :) A Steve Fletcher hat trick no less and goals from Purches and OConnor. Here is the Youtube video: http://www.youtube.c

Indeed, I would prefer to go up at Wembley via the Play Offs rather then getting 2nd but it is such a lottery.

However, I am not being picky as either way suits me:)

Thanks for the clip, just spent ten minutes watching it while pretending to be working. Reminded me of how we exploited the wide open spaces with Wade Elliott etc and I think we would do the same at Wembley with Ritchie and Pugh, Daniels and Francis. The teams of giants that inhabit this league could be ripped to shreds by our passing and movement on a good surface and with more space.

I think he means if the 2 were on offer he would take the Wembley route as would I but of course automatic is the route as anything can happen in the play offs, injuries etc.

Yes, Sheffield Utd did have a bad result on Saturday, but that hardly constitutes an implosion, does it? I'd still far rather be in their position than ours! Agree 100pc with your team selection, by the way; Tubbs is good to have up our sleeves as a fox-in-the-box for the last 20 mins when Bury are tiring.

I think it's Yeovil and ourselves with the easiest run in "On paper"!! With Tommy and Charlie both back, it would make an Automatic place very possible, but I do feel either Grabban starts to find the net, or Tubbs is given a chance. Mind you, our midfield could do with chipping in with a few goals as well. VERY interesting few weeks. Good Luck for Saturday, I'll be in France glued to my mobile for texts of our result. COYR

If you want the views of somebody who is clearly not a Bournemouth supporter. Then as I posted before the Oldham game I could see you picking up about 18 points in the run in. Still of that view. Bury, Colchester, and Notts Co should not be a problem. Scunthorpe are more of a challenge, but I think thats 3 points as well. Shrewsbury away- sorry cant see getting points there. Carlise another 3 points, then its down to the last game. Still going to very tight. However with all the team dropping points its all there for the taking. Good chance to make up ground with Sheff utd and Brentford playing each other.

Good comments as always!! Also Doncaster still have to play Swindon, Brentford and Tranmere.

Sheffield United have still got Swindon, Brentford and Tranmere.

Yeovil have got Swindon tomorrow night etc...

Therefore, even without going through all the remaining fixture list for the teams around us, it is clear that there is going to be a lot of "6 pointers" which we can capitalise upon :)

Don't care how we get promoted, but when we played Grimsby in the Mickey Mouse cup at wembley we took over 30,000 fans for the play off final at Cardiff against Lincoln only 17,000 can't work that one out no dowt the Parker knoll brigade will be eyeing up the best seats claiming they go week in and week out. Handful of home games left lets fill dean court . I live in oxford and travel down most weekends if I can make the 180 mile round trip I'm sure the Parker knoll brigade can walk the short distance from boscombe etc?.....

Automatic would be great, but I feel play offs is on the cards.

Day out at Wembley would be great, although The Millennium has a better atmosphere I think?

I think Tranmere could be a'fated' game for us, but anything can happen in football just look at Stevenage on Saturday?

I only manage a few games season
Due to illness, I nolonger drive & train journey is expensive & leaves me shattered.

I've advertised for car share to DC to no avail.
Even fans who only make it to odd games help.
Not everyone can afford home games even.

Probably because Wembley is so easy to get to from Bournemouth, whereas Cardiff takes twice as long.

I was at both and will remember them for ever.

If i remember rightly the tickets were only on sale for a short time, also the distance and the fact that it was on a bank holiday meant that people had already planned to go away. It was a cracking day, remember drinking in this pub in cardiff bay before the game which specialised in strong beers and then out in cardiff that night. Amazing memories!

It amazes me how many people travel a long way to support the cherries, A lot of our group that sit in the north stand do a 50 mile round trip a guy in front comes in from Portsmouth every game, Makes me wonder how many Bournemouth people actually support the team, Roll on Saturday ,

I have to say it's always great news when we get such important players back from injury, it will give everyone a boost. Right this nonsense about Wembley better than Automatic, well for spectacle yes but for the rest a big fat no!! think about it sensibly, the extra games, the time taken out of the managers close season, it's a month shorter for teams that make it to the play off final. Yes it would be a great day out but you are not guaranteed anything, so honestly other than a big day out it really isn't the way to get promoted. The only way I would be happy with a play off success would be if we had been a club who scraped into the play offs after a great end of season run, we have been top this season so although I will accept the play offs if that's what we get, I would think now we must be fighting for the top 2!
