Cherries: Pitman nets second winner in a week to reignite promotion push

BRETT Pitman’s first-half goal catapulted Cherries back into the thick of the League One promotion race following victory at Oldham today.

Pitman, whose penalty earned Cherries a 1-0 win at Stevenage in midweek, again won the day for the visitors at Boundary Park with a close-range effort.

However, Cherries were also thankful to goalkeeper Ryan Allsop for saving Jose Baxter’s second-half spot-kick.

Charlie Daniels made a welcome return for Cherries as boss Eddie Howe made one change to his starting line-up following the midweek win at Stevenage.

Daniels, who had missed Cherries past 10 games, was restored to left-back with Matt Ritchie, who had been a doubt due to a cut above his eye, dropping to the bench.

Tommy Elphick, sidelined by a knee injury since the 3-0 win at MK Dons last month, was also back in the Cherries squad, the defender named on the bench.

Chances were few and far between during a rather turgid opening period with Ryan Allsop racing off his line to save bravely at the feet of Jordan Obita early on.

Former Cherries loan striker Lee Barnard saw his snapshot blocked by Dan Seaborne before Allsop saved comfortably after Chris Iwelumo had met Connor Brown’s hanging cross.

Cherries made the breakthrough midway through the first half when Pitman swept home from close range after Lewis Grabban had supplied the assist following a swift counter-attack.

Oldham had a penalty appeal waved away after James Tarkowski had gone to ground under a challenge from Simon Francis at the start of the second half.

Cherries fashioned a hat-trick of chances in quick succession with Oldham goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis saving from Pitman after Grabban had put him through.

Bouzanis then clutched at the second attempt a long-range strike from Daniels before Grabban fired tamely into the stopper’s hands when he should have done better.

Allsop scurried across his line to save smartly from Obita after the Reading loan star had let fly from 20 yards before the Latics were awarded a penalty for handball against Grabban.

Goalkeeper Allsop came to Cherries’ rescue when he saved Jose Baxter’s poor penalty, the midfielder trying his luck with a dinked effort which left him with egg on his face.

Allsop then made a fine reaction stop from the same player with Baxter’s venomous free-kick in the 75th minute parried by the Cherries stopper.

Pitman’s deft lob landed on top of the net after Steve Cook had picked him out five minutes from time before a late barrage of Oldham pressure came to nothing.

Cherries: Allsop, Francis, Cook, Seaborne, Daniels (Ritchie, 73), Fogden, O’Kane, Arter, Pugh, Grabban (Hughes, 73), Pitman. Unused subs: Tubbs, Elphick, McQuoid, MacDonald, Jalal (g/k).

Booked: Arter, Pitman, Francis, McQuoid.

Latics: Bouzanis, Brown, M’Voto, Tarkowski, Grounds, Croft (Millar, 60), Wesolowski, Baxter, Obita (Montano, 67), Barnard, Iwelumo (Simpson, 69). Unused subs: Taylor, Smith, Winchester, Cisak (g/k).

Booked: Tarkowski.

Attendance: 3,540 (including 194 visiting supporters).

Referee: Keith Hill (Royston, Herts).

All to play for again with several results going our way today, but I still think we will have to win every game to secure a play-off place or have a chance of automatic promotion. We can't afford any more slip ups!

Why do you have to ruin things for yourself? Your first comment was fine this one is just pointless.

We outplayed Stevenage on Tuesday without Daniels and Elphick yet they thumped Sheffield Utd today. Football is a team game and we've got a great team! Deal with it 'Prophet'!!

This time of the season I'll take scrappy 1-0 all day long. Even losing those games, I still held a slender belief we could still make an automatic spot. Those above and around us have plenty of games against each other, it's wide open still. Yeovil possibly have easier run in outside of ourselves, if there is such a thing. Keep The Faith!!

We may have to win every game to get automatic promotion, although Pugh reckons another 5 wins will do it. I don't think we will have to win all of them to get in the play offs though.

Good win today albeit scrappy, but its better than playing well and losing as against Doncaster. Now we can start playing well and winning and if we do make the play offs, we can be playing well with a full squad to pick from again hopefully.

And Smhinto, i'm loving your forced sense of enjoyment.

SMHINTO it would have been better if you had given others the chance to say Yes the return of Daniels made a different.

That is why I pulled you up on it. At the end of the day if you believe that what you say is right there is little point in trying to convince others because the harder you try the more their backs go up.

What matters is that you me and many others are rejoicing over our win and let us forget the tit for tat.

Terrific result that tees up a golden opportunity to cement a play-off spot; we supporters can play our part by getting right behind the team from first minute to last next Saturday instead of sitting back and expecting a cricket score against a Bury side who will be dour and desperate. Automatic promotion is pie in the sky, but fourth place (which earns the crucial advantage of a home second leg in the play-off semis) is eminently achievable.

We all knew injuries were the main cause of the problems but there were other issues too. Don't forget we won in midweek without Daniels and elphick and with arter Fraser and Ritchie crocked.

I always thought the match v Tranmere would be our decider - just thought originally it was going to be for the champions place.
Great to see Allsop play so well and of course to have Daniels back with Elphick on the bench - lets hope this is our re-start. Still get very concerned with Arter - another booking - at what point to does he have to "meet" with the FA to explain his play!!!!

For the sake of all concerned can we call a truce on this silly and very annoying stuff and stick to commenting about how well the team plays rather than preempting how they are going to play, how many goals will be scored (go to the bookies and bet on the score if you have to).

I would rather read about who played well and who didn’t especially from those who attended the game today.

Quite frankly it doesn’t take an Einstein to figure out that when you have key players missing the team will not perform as it would otherwise so let’s take that aspect of the game for granted.

What really matters is how well we support the team over the remaining games and really get behind them and be the twelfth man.

It is becoming very boring on this blog board now and the sooner we get over it the better for all concerned. UTCIAD

In response to Lofty1971s request I was there and this is what I thought. Not a pretty game, first half was awful to be honest but one moment of quality with O'Kane and Grabban linking up led to the goal. Second half was more open and we probably should have got a second before the penalty. Allsop looked good and we were pretty solid at the back coping pretty well with a lot of ariel pressure, great to see Daniels back. Barnard was a pest as usual!

What a difference a week makes! Last week it was all doom and gloom and, then following two away wins we are going to win promotion and everything in the garden is rosy. For some people we always have to be either a total disaster or world-beaters.
After, a disastrous start we are now in an amazing position. Sure there are going to be bad weeks and good weeks but, come on, it's fun and certainly not boring isn't it? Think of where we would be without Eddie and Jason.
There are going to be ups and downs between now and the end of the season and none of us really know where it is all going to end. So let's all just get a grip, get behind the lads, enjoy the ride and be grateful that we've got something to play for.

It will be a cricket score I have no doubt about it as someone has been due a pasting by our brilliant team-lets enjoy

Well, well, well! Charlie and Tommy back fit, 2nd clean sheet in a row,Brett scoring again and a goal from open play. I thought all these things were beyond us now? I agree and its funny how when we lose there are double the posts
I guess some just wait for that moment
but glad to say that you and me had the faith just what true supporters should have as all teams go through sticky patches.

Your a legend and a true supporter and I couldnt have put it better myself

Why do you have to ruin things for yourself? Your first comment was fine this one is just pointless. We outplayed Stevenage on Tuesday without Daniels and Elphick yet they thumped Sheffield Utd today. Football is a team game and we've got a great team! Deal with it 'Prophet'!!
So why did we lose 5 on the trot

Dear me, what is your problem. Delusions of grandeur spring to mind. You haven't watched the team all season, but think you know so much more than those who have. Go and annoy some other team, pleeeeeeeeese. Well done to the team today, two wins on the trot after that poor run shows true character. UTC
What is wrong with you lot he is just putting his opinion on here what we all do. Results again wnt our way apart the Brentford last min goal
anyway we at back in the mix. lets enjoy it .

Feels great to be 4th again (net 6th depending on the Swindon v Yeovil game). Had we lost we would still be 7th, and certainly wouldn't have been out of it, as it is we won and we are right back in the auto promotion battle and now with a run of games ahead of us where we can guarantee the play-offs at least. All runs come to an end good or bad, now we have started our good run again, here's hoping it lasts for the next 7 games!!

The only question that is left is whether we have the promotion party in Liverpool, Blackpool or travel all the way back to bmth?? I reckon a party in Liverpool!!!

Well done to the team, its great to see you back on track. I am a little confused (its not age!)- i remember only a week or so ago there were over 100 posts with around 75% which were negative.

I stayed clear of the comments as i began to realise that these people are expecting way to much from the team. I have been down to watch the last 3 home games, and yes i would say they played poor. I did sit there and think how are they going to manage in the league above.

Where have those 75% of people gone? There isnt many negative comments on here anymore.

1 question - why are people being made redundant? Not having a financial background, i am wrong to think that EM is hinding something, or is it a case he has spen way over his means?

Good luck to AFCB

well done to the team, but I have one criticism good teams play with discipline and do not concede as many penalties as we do, football is not going to be pretty from now on it is going to be about results and we must stop giving the opposition a helping hand

Would be nice but I reckon it's going to the wire! Hoping for a sunny day in the north west with results going our way. I think that potentially it could be the last day of the season with 4/5 teams battling for the top two places

A win is a win, however you get it and if it has to be "ground out" does that matter at this stage. Like most posters I listened to the game, the impression I got that we did play some good stuff as well - Grabbham badly needs a goal to restart his Season I suspect, but how good is the rest of his game and only those who were there can say whether he should keep his place or not - any opinions/views? With four of the remaining seven games at home we can help by packing the grouind and giving the team our full support - four " sell outs ", please!

We lost 5 on the trot for the same reason that Stevenage thumped Sheff Utd and the rest of the top ten teams have struggled to be consistent. It happens. If you look at our games since the start of the year (Brentford away) we failed to win 5, then we won 5, then we lost 5 and now we've won 2. The wins have been with and without Daniels and Elphick.
There is no doubting both players have been solid performers but at the end of the day it's about the team, the squad and the management. I have have faith in the lot.

In response to 'Square Old Codger' I'd try Tubbs in place of Grabban and bring Grabban on as the opposition run out of steam. He seems to lack the confidence in front of goal but his pace and work rate is still influential.
