Molesley's backing 'quality' Cherries to turn the tide

FORMER Dean Court favourite Mark Molesley has issued a warning to the rest of League One: Cherries still have time to resurrect their promotion charge.

The ex-Cherries midfielder is adamant his old club possess too much quality to let their Championship dream fade without a fight during the run-in.

Molesley, who joined Exeter City after his contract with Cherries was cancelled by mutual consent in January, is desperate to see the Dorset outfit triumph in League One this term.

And despite Eddie Howe’s men dropping out of the top six after a five-match losing streak, Molesley insists Cherries can enjoy a memorable finale.

He told the Daily Echo: “I am still in the area and, other than our own, it is the first result I look for and I am still in touch with all the lads. Bournemouth is part of me now.

“I still think they have got too much quality and too much in the changing room to not make a serious challenge up there.

“They have had a little bit of a wobble but I think everyone is going to have one and it is better for them to have one now and have enough time to resurrect it.

“I am sure they are confident they are probably a better side than Doncaster from Saturday’s viewing, so there is nothing to fear in the league.

“It is just a matter of getting over this little blip but I know the management and the players and I know they will be determined and working twice as hard to get that back. I am sure that next win is round the corner and once they get that win, they will put it behind them and learn from it.

“League One is really tight and everyone can beat everyone. A couple of wins and you are straight back in there.

“They only have to get their own results in order and I am sure they will be pushing for promotion.

“They are definitely going to get their chance to catch those teams and it is just a matter of them getting the wins.”

One of Howe’s first permanent signings in January 2009, Molesley helped AFC Bournemouth escape relegation before being restricted by injury to 10 appearances in the following season’s promotion.

Cherries visit Stevenage tonight (7.45pm) and Molesley knows all about the opposition – having played for Stevenage Borough before they dropped Borough from their name in 2010.

Molesley, who scored five goals in 60 Cherries appearances, added: “I had a stint at Stevenage in the Conference. They were always a big side in the Conference and always came close to getting promoted.

“They are another team not to be underestimated and have done very well to get out of the Conference to become a comfortable League One side.”
