Cherries: Redundancies confirmed at football club
10:39am Tuesday 5th March 2013 in Sport
POPULAR: Mick Cunningham, who was yesterday made redundant by Cherries
SEVEN members of AFC Bournemouth staff are understood to have been made redundant in what Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell has described as a "restructuring" exercise.
Although Mitchell declined to reveal the number of job losses at Dean Court when questioned by the Echo this morning, the Echo understands seven members of staff left the club yesterday - including long-serving club photographer and programme editor Mick Cunningham.
Commercial executive Tom Jeffes is also understood to have left, with Echo sources claiming further cuts were made in commercial, accounts, ground staff, Black Label Events and Hot Radio.
Asked by the Echo this morning if he had any regrets over the job losses, Mitchell said: "Of course I have. Some of them are friends of mine.
"I have been here three-and-a-half, nearly four years and you can’t ignore the fact you get to know people and get to respect their strengths and weaknesses, and you become involved with them.
"It is not something which I take lightly but, on the other hand, I am here to do a job. That job is to secure the club’s future and to play the best football we can for the fans.
"I won’t shy away from making difficult decisions."
Asked about the departure of popular media man Cunningham, Mitchell added: "I became very close to Mick myself and often stood chatting withhim at away and home games and he has done a great service for the club.
"But as regards anything else regarding Mick or any of the other staff, I don’t really want to comment on individuals."

It appears to be a very strange time in the season to be 'restructuring'.
I wish all of those who are now out of work well for the future and good luck with finding new employment.

Pressure from the Russian's to have the business run properly, EM doesn't have enough business sense to do that himself so someone holding the purse strings has told him to do it.

I'm feeling sorry for all 7, but in particular Mick Cunningham. That guy has given his ALL to this football club. I urge all supporters to boycott buying programmes in future, not that I have bought many these days due to cost, but they have always for many many many years been excellent. but no more. I'm fuming, if this is how GOOD people are treated, then I'd sooner we stayed in Div 1. Joe Roach's departure was bad enough, but THIS is the last straw!!! MITCHELL OUT!!! and take your over paid family with you....

Bournemouth have reportidly the highest ever wage bill for this division ... I fear we may be about to emulate that team at the other end of this division!
I agree though looks like Mitchell has protected friends & family (Groves, Brooks, Tom), but what else would you expect from the man a little over a year ago asked fans for a fight, swore on national live radio, whilst (apparently drunk) & told us all if we don't like it to go down the road & watch the scummers.

An indication I expect that the Accounts due out shortly will shew a swingeing trading loss and is no doubt the reason for not strengthening the Squad. Eddie and Jason have brought some order and discipline to Groves huge, expensive, unbalanced and unweildy squad, moving on the most expensive - Davids, Demouge and Barnard and trimming it to a mere 30. Max Demin is not Abramovich, with a bottomless pit of money, but a shrewd business man who expects a business to be run properly and within it's means. Do we really need to have Groves and Brookes still on the payroll? ..

They are officially a community radio and as such should not be on the AFCB payroll anyway.

I see Seven Developments diggers working away this morning at DC, so Mitchell continues to carry out unnecessary work while Mick Cunningham and other valued staff lose their livelihoods.
Why should "restructuring" Radio Stations and Hospitality companies have anything to do with the Football Club? Eddie Mitchell has quite clearly stated that these are stand alone businesses so should operate at no cost and independently of the club, surely he cant have been slightly economical with the truth for a change.
Buckle up and enjoy the ride folks I think you will find its going to get pretty bumpy from today onwards.
Good luck against Doncaster I hope the result gives us something to distract us from what is hurtling our way.

Not only is this highly disloyal to Mick Cunningham but total stupidity! He will never be able to be replaced. Nobody else will have his photographic skills or show the unswerving commitment, hard work and loyalty to the club as Mick. I was his next door neighbour and he is now one of my very best friends; I know how hard he works, how much he cares and just how much he's given up for the club and given to the club. I am absolutely stunned and disgusted.
He never missed a game and founded the fanzine Not The 8502 that older fans will remember, all whilst battling serious illness.
Although I'm not a Cherries fan, I'm shocked and disgusted by this treatment of Mick.

I am deeply saddened for Mick and all the others that have been made redundant.
What saddens me more is that Mitchell has somehow managed to retain those that add no value such as his own son, Brooks and Groves.

I worry that if we don't achieve promotion either this season or next, things will be serious for the club.
I just hope that if we don't achieve our goal we don't fold FOREVER.I enjoy watching Bath City play, which is now my local team but I'd be gutted ifI couldn't enjoy my trips back to my 'hometown' club, even though it costs me a small fortune around £50 with transport etc,Bath City costs me around £10 I can hve a few beers & have change out o £20! I even get o chat to Ken Loach a Twerton Park! lol Sorry,I digress....
I'm hoping for promotion via the play-offs though.I think its fantastic day out & its absolutely amazing the support we get.Last time I think it was around 34,000 fans, which is amazing

We all know in our heart of hearts that the Demin/Mitchell era will end in tears, we are just hope that we can have a nice little ride along the way to the Championship and perhaps beyond Pompey-style before the inevitable implosion.
Many fans will remember previous financial crisises where the general opinion has been "never again" and "we have to live within our means", but like the football junkies that we are, no sooner has a couple of season's austerity and dismal football passed than we get excited by propect of "new investment" (i.e. money down the toilet) from new millionaire/dodgy/eg
otistical/leeching owners.
As anyone who knows and has worked with EM knows, he is a tricky and sometimes abrasive character. No doubt Demin is used to getting his own way as well so add a few barrells of booze to this mix and the result is potential explosive!
Given how much money the club must be losing through its player wage bill alone, never mind a glance at the directors car park, these redundancies are a relative drop in the ocean so it is hardly suprising that there are conspiracy theories coming out of the rumour mill!

However, maybe now, could I ask Afcb4life, Steady Eddie and any others that come onto our sight with constant abuse could please refrain?
No true football fan wants to see another club go down the pan, and we have had to put up with these so called Bournemouth fans coming onto our site, generally gloating or being offensive and abusive. Please realise you are an embarressment to Bournemouth FC!!!
By all means, feel free to come onto the far superior (sorry couldn't resist) Swindon site, personally I enjoy the reasoned banter with fans of other clubs. However AFCB4life, Steadie Eddie etc, maybe now would be a good time for you to show some humility, stop swearing and stop gloating about our recent problems, besides I think you may have enough of your own to worry about now. And when did the rivalry between Swindon and AFCB become so hostile - I always thought we shared a friendly rivalry????
Best of luck Bournemouth, hope you come up in 2nd place behind the double champions in waiting.

I am no fan of Mitchell since his 606 outburst and learning of the reasons for his company name. I would be very concerned if our chairman was contracting all work done at the stadium to his own companies. How much has he actually invested and how much has he taken out ?
I think a few of you have suddenly realised how precarious your position is. The reason you were able to buy Matt from us was our money man pulling out suddenly. We were lucky to find new investment quickly but it brings home the stark realities very quickly.
I few have mentioned loans from the Russian but I am not sure this is how money can be invested following the wage cap. Maybe wrong but I believe he may not be able to take it back, bit of a dark area that needs to be cleared up.
Your wage bill however must be greater than the £250,000 ours was reputed to be, despite what your chairman says, and this would be the real hit (as it was with us).
Wouldn't be surprised to see your chairman leave after all ground improvements have been completed. He seems, to me, to be lining his pockets and with nothing left for him what reason would there be to stay.
I hope it all works out for you but beware the wolf in sheep's clothing !

'boom and bust' culture that often occurs when people with money get hold of football clubs. It's likened to the stock market of which is up and down like a whores drawers. After a while they get bored with their new toy and want out.
.
It has happened to many clubs in the past. The first sign is players are sold and not replaced. Relegation follows then crowds fall, finance drops. The next thing is the Pink Circle Ford Second Hand Spare Part League looms.
.
On the other hand these redundancies may well be a piece of genuine prudent cost cutting by the club and nothing more sinister than that.
.
Let's hope our injury crisis heals before we run out of games.
.
But in the meantime let's enjoy the ride

Yes its sad , whats happened but there is a business reason behind it.
Is Demin leaving?
I doubt it. He paid £15 million alone to sponser our shirts. Reality check people, he is not in it to make money.
There are people here that would love AFCB to fall...sorry its not going to happen. How many matches have been sell out since Xmas? I have lost count
The potential is there. Demin has houses around the world and what he has spent so far is peanuts. Some would love to believe he is trying to get his money back when his annual fuel bill on his jet is more.

This seems to have been the last straw for Andrew Black, the chairman and main investor who decided to sell and invest no further of his hard earned cash. Hence the threat of administration and the sale of Ritchie to the Cherries to provide much needed cash flow until the sale of the club was completed. Hopefully the club will now be run on more sustainable grounds, although the main money men of the new consortium have remained anonymous. If indeed Mitchell has upset his backer, the fallout could be serious!

The cuts are I understand include parts of Mitchell's "Empire" Hot Radio and BLE so it's entirely feasible that Demin has told Mitchell to get the house in order. the huge fee that BLE charge the Club and the interest free loans from AFCB shewn in the last Accounts etc. Eddie Howe has already cut the wage bill by a million or so by moving on the three highest paid players and is I understand now working within an agreed budget. It is quite possible that Max Demin (and friends) will capitalize their loans to AFCB by a share issue , thus taking control of the Club. Eddie is worried about Max. The overspending on buses, car parks and the shop is a kick in the teeth for those who got told to leave yesterday. I heard a few had gone on the youth development side this afternoon.
Seems the club are struggling to attain category 3 status under the Elite Player Performance Plan which the Premier League mad all Football League clubs sign up to back in 2011.
If they attain cat 3 status (the lowest) the board have to agree to a guaranteed budget of £315,000 per season and can only sign youth players at the age of 11 and not as previously at the age of 9.
See Southampton FC have already attained category 1 status for their youth development centre with a guaranteed budget being in place @ £2.3 mil !!
Also another big change regarding the restructuring of youth development centres is the fact that the 90 minute rule on the distance a youth player has to travel to youth academy has been 'srapped' under the Elite Player Performance Plan.
This effectively means that any of our young academy players from the age of 9 - 18 can be 'scouted' by any other premier league or league football club by the scout giving AFCB 48 hours notice that they are turning up to a training ground.
If this happens how long will AFCB be able to hold onto any of their young academy players.
Given the choice between staying at AFCB or going into a Prem category 1 academy, not long I suspect.
For all of you who know nothing about the Elite Player Performance Plan, you can Google it to see the implications to AFCB and their youth development !!
Sad Day's indeed.

Can't get to many away games due to kids football on a Saturday morning but had hoped to go to the original MKDons game. Because they got through in the cup it was postponed :-(
Similar with Yeovil, switched to Tuesday evening to be shown on Sky.
There seems to be a top of the table curse at the moment which might mean it is a good time to play Doncaster :-)
We battered them but their keeper made 4/5 outstanding saves and an unfortunate own goal (their only effort on target I think) meant we only came away with a point.
With Stevenage doing the business as well tonight it is certainly making for an exciting season !
We put a big dent in one of the hopefuls last week-end and hopefully will do again this Saturday to make it a 7 horse race.
Unless someone goes mad, it looks like it could go down to the wire with two very interesting matches on that last week-end. I'm sure you know yours but Brentford/Donny as well !!!

People panic so quickly and trolls on here make it worse.
So everyone take a deep breath and do not reply to people who live in caravans
As far as I'm aware you're incorrect about our shirt sponsor.
EC is the company of one of the other Russians now on the AFCB board as a director.
Logic says that the 3 Russians may be looking to get more involved rather than less.
Hopefully the next group of people to become redundant at AFCB is Edmund and his entire clan.

Let's hope we can put our lad Richie into his proper wing position soon and see what all this lot rave about.
I think you have seen an increase in Swindon fans on here in the last few days due to the level of abusive posts appearing on our site by so called Bournemouth fans over the last month or two.
Anyway, good luck with the rest of the season - could do with you lot stuffing Donny at the weekend...

Firstly, maybe you could re-read my post - the request I made was that some of your so-called fans would refrain from coming onto our site, gloating, swearing and generally being abusive - as has happened since our owner troubles / embargo etc commenced a couple of months ago, but now you are basically making the comment that we refrain from doing exactly what I requested from yourselves in the first place????
Dishing it out and taking it springs to mind???
PS - you will see from my username that I live in Bournemouth and stated that I hope the club is OK - hardly getting "wet" in my "undercrackers" now is it?
Think Swindon have got an excellent manager now, highly regarded, so boosted by a late win Saturday should stay in the frame now. Wouldn't bet against any one on the top eight at the moment. Quite fancy beating MK dons in play off semi and then Swindon at wembley!

We are pleased with the appointment - I've spoken to a few Villa fans who really rate him - also nice to have a bit of calm in the dugout now!!
Think you are right about the top 8 - so many games against each other too - much more exciting than the Premigreed league. Good luck against Donny.
MK Dongs - that would be good (does anyone else like them??) although not sure how good my journey to Wembley would be - about 5 of us Town fans from Bournemouth and 30k Bournemouth fans all turning up at Fleet services could be fun - still we would give it a good go at out singing you...
Would love Swindon as champs, Bournemouth runners up and Yeovil to win play offs though
