Cherries: Sheringham and Flahavan set to make comebacks
5:58pm Monday 4th March 2013 in Sport
By Ian Wadley
CHARLIE Sheringham is tomorrow expected to make his long-awaited return to competitive football after more than a year on the sidelines.
Development coach Chris Hargreaves confirmed that the Cherries striker was in line to make his comeback in the club's Hampshire Senior Cup semi-final clash at AFC Totton.
Sheringham, out since fracturing a bone in his foot during Cherries' 1-1 draw with Brentford on Boxing Day 2011, could start in the Testwood Stadium fixture (7.45pm).
The 24-year-old frontman sustained the injury shortly after opening the scoring for Cherries at Griffin Park with his maiden Football League goal following his move from the non-league ranks.
Son of former England star Teddy, Sheringham was forced to overcome a series of setbacks during a painstaking quest for fitness.
Having recently returned to training, he is now poised to step up his comeback bid by appearing against Steve Riley's Southern Premier outfit.
Veteran goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan is also likely to be named in the Cherries team after recovering from shoulder surgery.
Flahavan, who sustained the damage during pre-season, will be the most experienced player in a largely youthful Cherries line-up.
Coach Hargreaves offered an insight into how long-term absentees Sheringham and Flahavan will be feeling.
The former Plymouth, Northampton and Torquay star told the Daily Echo: “You are just champing at the bit to get back on the field of play.
“You see the other lads playing and training every day and just desperately want to get in to help.
“For those two boys in particular, it is just a matter of playing football again and having that match situation because that is what they are missing.
“They can train for hours and weeks on end but a game is totally different.”
Aside from Sheringham and Flahavan, Cherries look set to name a team made up predominantly of development squad players.
Hargreaves added: “It is probably the biggest game that some of the young boys will have played in.
“It is not a concern for Flavs and Charlie but I am sure they would prefer to have the game meaning something so it is a good game for them to come back. It will be a good tempo and a good test.”
Meanwhile, Benji Buchel, the penalty shoot-out hero of Cherries' Hampshire Senior Cup quarter-final win over Eastleigh, was carried off on a stretcher after suffering a knee injury while playing for loan club Dorchester Town on Saturday.
Dorchester boss Phil Simkin reported that the keeper had returned to Dean Court to be assessed.

I had high hopes for Charlie before his untimely injury, so I'd love to see him come through and show us hat we believe he is capable of.
News coming in is that seven members of staff at AFCB were made reduntant today - including Mick Cunningham???
But what the heck is going on at DC??? I can't believe Mick Cunningham has been made redundant, let alone the other 6. He has given everything for the club man and boy, it's a disgrace. The guy has produced programmes of real quality, AWARD winning ones at that. So I suppose the club won't be going ahead with expanding the Club Shop now???
REALLY annoyed at this news!!!

Good luck against Donny - a draw or win for you lot will do fine by us.

Up the cherries wrote:Agreed, we are good enough. The problem is trying to keep key players on the field of play. This is what is causing our downfall at the moment.
No offence to Charlie, he did show a bit of promise before he got injured, his long range volley springs to mind but at this stage of the season after over a year out injured I can't see him making any impact this season. Would be nice to be proved wrong on this! And as I'm still positive we're heading for the championship his opportunities will be even less. The lads have a week off to reflect now, on saturday start again as if Eddie just walked through the door and let another unbeaten run continue starting with a win against Doncaster. Because we are good enough for that! We've just forgot that in the last few games
.
My biggest fear is that when our key assetts return it will be too late as we would have run out of games.
.

Well we have that with afcb4life on our forum.... 'ave a word - clip him round the lug hole - or something to make him see sense.
He's quite welcome to contribute - but lets have some good wind ups, not the repetitive badly spelt drivel please.
I feel embarrassed on your clubs behalf as others may think you are all as bad as him/her- and I know that isn't the case.

Steady have you ever been sat round a table and all being grown ups having a real good chin wag and conversation and then this little spoilt brat appears, running round the table and chipping in with the most stupid and irrelevant things, most try and ignore him in the hope he goes away.

Actually in all seriousness i did try to encourage him/her to stay on this site, but to be honest how can i preach to others when im just as guilty myself at times.???.
I do like a bit of banter as you lot know but sometimes it can get a bit out of hand from both sides. I actually had a warning from the echo yesterday due to somebody making a complaint.
My advice to all AFCB supporters would be have fun with the opposition but try and keep it clean as we run the risk of getting banned from this and other sites. I am currently on my 4th username which im not really proud of to be honest.
There you go C & F, i have tryed. I insist you keep that wheel brace though coz according to a work colleague who is a Scummer(ugh) the wheels are about to fall off your wagon big-time, due to the fact PDC is no longer with you, his words, not mine.

Moronic statement, probably from a teenager, who should be doing his homework or a VERY immature adult.

I'll put the wheel brace in the post ... not liking the rumblings from your back-room staff ... no smoke without fire as they say.
