Cherries: Fletch has every confidence in fellow frontmen
7:00am Friday 1st March 2013 in Sport
By Ian Wadley
STEVE Fletcher is backing his fellow frontmen to come good and is convinced Cherries have the firepower to rediscover their golden touch.
Cherries are the leading scorers in League One with 57 goals but have failed to hit the net on their way to suffering three successive defeats.
Both Matt Tubbs and Lewis Grabban missed good opportunities as Cherries failed to convert some fine chances against Coventry on Tuesday.
But club legend Fletcher, a late substitute in the 2-0 loss at the hands of the Sky Blues, is adamant Eddie Howe’s men will find their shooting boots.
Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Leyton Orient (3pm), the Cherries veteran told the Daily Echo: “You could probably count on one hand the amount of teams it doesn’t happen to.
“It is something we have got to put right. We had chances on Tuesday and we do score goals. It is proven, the stats are there and we have got good goalscorers in the team.
“On another occasion, we would have been two or three up at half-time. But it is just about getting the rub of the green and that little bit of luck that is not with us. The strikers will be doing the same as we have since the gaffer came back this week, next week and the week after. We stay out two or three times extra every week and do different types of finishing.
“I have been through this dozens and dozens of times in Bournemouth teams, it can happen and you can’t put your finger on it.
“We are not taking our chances and there is no easy solution. We have just got to keep plugging away, one will come and then we will be back where we were.”
Summer signing Grabban leads the club’s goalscoring charts with 13 league strikes in 31 appearances, while Brett Pitman has notched an impressive nine times in 14 since his return from Bristol City.
Cherries dropped out of the play-off places following their unwanted hat-trick of defeats but are just three points off the automatic promotion spots and four adrift of the summit.
Club record appearance-maker Fletcher added: “We have got goalscorers in the team, don’t worry about that. Yes, we might have missed a few chances on Tuesday, but we have got good goalscorers and good finishers.
“It happens to the best in the world. We have to deal with it, get on with it and have the backing of everyone.”

Hopefully three points tomorrow, but I feel the bubble has burst and another poor display and result awaits. Sorry if that sounds negative but that's my gut feeling. I really do hope I'm completely wrong though!

Whilst I hope they can put it right I have to say, Grabban has scored an average of 1 goal in every two and a half matches and the majority of Pitman's goals have been penalties. If I'm right I think he has scored 4 in open play in 14 matches, so an average of 1 in every three and a half games. With the strength of the team they have behind them their averages are not good enough and these averages show we are lacking a good old fashioned centre forward.

Eddie needs to bring in a big target man for the rest of the season with a view to a permanent move. Someone like Sam Vokes would be ideal. No good having top class wingers and crossers of the ball if no-one's big enough to get on the end of them! As has been said already, our players looked like a team of hobbits up against Sheffield Utd. They just are not robust enough to grind out results when the bully boys hit town. This is the business end of the season and now is the time to win and win ugly if need be. Teams will start to tighten up and stifle us especially those around us in the League. Sheff Utd are master-class at this and that is one of the reasons why they are top of the league. We have no big strikers and therefore we cannot change our style so the opposition will just put us in their back pockets throughout the game.
.
Ed himself stated that Sheff Utd know how to get promotions as in the plural. We have to be more ruthless and show more aggression in our play especially at this stage of the season.
.
Yes I agree that the bubble has burst due to injuries mainly at the wrong time of the season.
.
If we are to go up we must do it automatically as I do not believe that we have the steel and robustness to do it via the play-offs.
.
With that said, I do hope that we get a result Saturday but with all the reported injuries I cannot see it.

Since his return it would seem that he has been deployed in a wider role which may be hampering his striking options.

Perhaps we should play him up front more?.

I don't write on here very often as family, work and life in general takes priority but I do keep an eye on events from a far, and when time allows, I read people's comments. There are 2 people who obviously have no affiliation with AFCB yet feel the need to spout nonsense and negativity in order to receive attention.
Firstly there's the perpetual 'Prophet of Doom' from Lincoln who tries to demonstrate how knowledgeable he is of the great game and belittles anyone who dares to contradict him. Just last week he predicted that the Cherries would draw with Sheff Utd, then Sheff Utd would win 2-1 before finally deciding that whoever scored first would win - pretty much covering all the bases. Then barely minutes after the final whistle blew he appeared on the Echo site blowing his own trumpet and displaying glee at our defeat. How sad.
What's more, he did it all the way from Northampton following a highly covert 'scouting' mission. Based on his knowledge and what he listed as his observational objectives, I would assume that he used to scout for Grimsby, Wrexham, Chester and Darlington and is now working for Plymouth.
He had 'predicted' a draw with Coventry yet when we lost he had somehow 'predicted' that too.
He 'predicted' defeats and draws throughout our undefeated run and when we won 5 games on the spin yet he hasn't actually seen the Cherries play since the 10th of November.
He constantly states that due to the absence of Daniels and Elphick we are destined to lose. Why? We've won with them and without them, likewise, we have lost with them and without them. In fact, the last time we conceded 3 goals was at Walsall when both players were present.
There's no denying that losing 2 players from a settled team will have an effect but does it have to be mentioned in every message? Once is a valid point, 100 times makes it irrelevant. We have brought in Seaborne, Painter and Ritchie as cover at some have worked better than others. It takes time for partnerships to form and players to gel.
The point he has made about Painter not being match fit is a valid one but unfortunately the valid points raised are so few and far between and, generally covered in so much verbal diarrhoea, that no one wants to swallow them.
It doesn't matter whether (< note the spelling!) someone rates a player or not, the game is about opinions, what matters is we support the team, whoever wears the shirt, and get behind the lads.
The other 'attention seeker' would appear to be Mr Oxbig. He has stated that he 'only watches football for his entertainment' with is just like any other 'armchair Man Ure fan'. Stay at home Michael and don't bother us with your pointless comments. You won't be missed.
Real football doesn't come with a remote control. Real supporters treat the idea as a marriage: For richer, for poorer, In wet weather or dry, 3 points or no points, We're Bournemouth 'til we die!

Secondly, I do not take glee at our defeats at all. It riles me just as it does many others to lose. It may seem that way depending on the wording and ones interpretation of what I am saying. For example it is like a text message where one can tell someone to 'F' off, it could mean in a joking manner or it could be serious. Depending on interpretation.
.
Thirdly. I did not all state at all that we would be destined to lose if we lost Elphick and Daniels. It just increases the likelyhood of defeat of whch has proved to be correct. And yes I may have over stated this on many occasions. The reason for this is because there are people who seemed to think that losing key players does not make any difference. Well I can assure you it does!! Especially against stronger opposition hence, recent results.
.
One can get away with injuries against lesser oppostion, but you must note we are playing Sheff Utd, Coventry and Doncaster and not Christchurch or Downton. We need our key player fit against these sides, if not you will come unstuck as proven over the last three games, we have!!
.
Hope this puts things into perpective
