Cherries: Sky Blues punish missed chances

MISSED CHANCES: Cherries striker Matt Tubbs
BOSS Eddie Howe was tonight left to rue a “harsh” defeat after missed opportunities had proved costly for promotion-chasing Cherries.
The Dean Court outfit produced an improved performance – particularly during a bright and inventive first half – but failed to make the most of a series of early chances.
Recalled striker Matt Tubbs was denied by a fine save before Lewis Grabban and Tubbs were both unable to hit the target when clean through on goal.
After weathering the storm, play-off contenders Coventry punished Cherries’ profligacy when ace marksman Leon Clarke lashed them into the lead against the run of play.
Cherries continued to dominate possession after the break but there was no way past City keeper Joe Murphy.
And the hosts were condemned to a third successive League One defeat – which saw them drop out of the play-off zone – when Sky Blues captain Carl Baker coolly converted a late penalty.
Howe told the Daily Echo: “It was a harsh one for us. I thought the lads were excellent for the majority of the game.
“We created a number of chances early in the game and really wanted to take one of those when we were well on top. It was one of those days when we got hit on the counter with a sucker-punch.
“We put a lot of balls into their box in the second half, asked a lot of questions and the ball never fell for us. The pleasing thing in terms of the reaction from Saturday is that we created a lot of chances.”
Manager Howe made three changes after the 1-0 loss against Sheffield United as Tubbs replaced Brett Pitman up front, with Josh McQuoid and Wes Fogden given the nod on the flanks. Matt Ritchie switched to left-back, with injured Marc Pugh and Brighton loanee Marcos Painter missing out.
The match stopped almost before it had even started when Coventry defender Carl Dickinson required lengthy treatment to a suspected broken nose following an aerial collision with Fogden.
Once play finally resumed with the bloodied Dickinson continuing, Cherries looked revitalised.
Playing with width, the hosts were threatening virtually every time they went forward in an exciting opening.
After City skipper Baker had forced a routine save from Shwan Jalal, opposing keeper Murphy produced a sharp one-handed parry to repel Tubbs’s sweet volley after a powerful Ritchie cross.
Cherries maintained the high tempo and Murphy should have been tested when Grabban was found by Fogden’s clever header, but the leading scorer fired high and wide from eight yards.
Frontman Grabban was then denied by a fine defensive block after he had been sent clear following a surging run and precision pass from Eunan O’Kane.
The slick speed of Cherries’ play was causing problems for Coventry and Howe’s men should have been rewarded on 20 minutes, only for Tubbs to shoot agonisingly wide after latching on to Dickinson’s gift of a headed backpass.
Below par against Preston and thwarted by Sheffield United in back-to-back losses, Cherries looked far better for Howe’s changes, with Ritchie, McQuoid and Fogden all catching the eye in wide areas.
But for all their promising work, they still had nothing to show for it.
It took an exceptional save from Jalal to prevent Coventry bagging a classic goal against the run of play when Franck Moussa unleashed a 15-yard rocket.
But Jalal was powerless to stop the Sky Blues edging ahead in first-half stoppage time. Battling for a long ball, strong City striker Clarke fended off Steve Cook before hammering the visitors into a surprise lead.
With it all to do after the break, Cherries started on the front foot and the impressive Ritchie’s low cutback forced a desperate defensive clearance.
Jalal was again sharp when diving low to hold a fierce drive from Clarke, who had been picked out by Baker.
Arter fired over following good work by McQuoid before Howe decided to refresh his attack, introducing Pitman and Ryan Fraser in a bid to get back in the game.
Grabban saw a goalbound effort well blocked by James Bailey before McQuoid’s swerving hit from the rebound flew wide. Fraser, cutting in from the right, was next to try his luck but he shot straight at Murphy.
With his final throw of the dice, Howe called on veteran targetman Steve Fletcher.
But Cherries’ big task became mountainous when the Sky Blues doubled their advantage six minutes from time. Referee Simon Hooper had no hesitation in pointing to the spot after David Bell’s cross had appeared to hit Grabban’s hand, with City skipper Baker doing the rest with a cool penalty.
Pitman saw an effort hacked off the line as Cherries pressed late on but there was no way back as Coventry defended resolutely and saw out time.

Its the same rubbish performances as when Groves was in charge, not a decent performance since the new year, who will be calling for Howes head shortly.

Blaming Tubbs is arse no one looked like scoring. Every thing went left nobody looked to the right Second half Mcquoid was lazy and gutless 5050 balls had no interest and to take Foggy off who might not be the most gifted but what he does give you effort and tempo befor Mclazy was stupid. Seabourne is useless thinner version of Addison ponderus to many touches no passion no drive. and good to see Pitman is back to the old Pitman thought he was going to cry when Arter wouldnt let him take the freekick. Eddie has let the best forwards leave the club Pitman record 7 goals 5 against Crewe and 3 pens not sintilating is it. not truely concerned think we will be there or abouts at end of season creating but now needs to stop favourites and put on the guys that will put in a shift. and last but not least how can a forward playing in Dutch prem league not be seen to be good enough fit enough to oust Fletch from bench laughable truely laughable.

Shminto, you predicted 2-2, so wrong again!
Yeah, drop Tubbs, he has had a really good run in the side after all!!!!
Get in a Leon Clarke type player, what you mean like Wes Thomas?!
Still well in the mix, tough game on Saturday, where we are now not expected to win, so lets get a surprise 3 points and get back on the winning trail.

For me tonight Grabban should have been off instead of Tubbs. you could see that after he went down and fell on his shoulder he was moving awkwardly, and every time a sub was made he looked over to the board as if willing it to be number 22.
Also thought that Wes Fogden had a great game, he works so hard and whilst he might not be as exciting as some of our other wide men what you get from him is 100% every time. I reckon that was Matt Richies best game for us thus far and felt that his link up play on the left with McQuoid was more promosing than when he's played with Pugh. Still, id like to see him in a more advanced role, potentially even in behind the strikers with licence to shoot on goal freely as I feel we arent doing that enough at the moment.
I'd consider playing hughest at left back to free Matt up, he might not be the quickest but he is solid and the sort of player we need on the pitch to lead the lads at the moment.
I back us for 3 points on Sat! Up the cherries!

We started each half fairly brightly, but in the end were turned over by an average side who only put up an average performance. Our only bright performer was Matt Ritchie who whilst playing at left back was our only real offensive threat. Ritchie was far and away the best player on the pitch. Tubbs is clearly not up to standard at this end of L1 and McQuoid really didn't look that interested throughout.
The defending for their first goal was unacceptable, two centre backs failed to take responsibility for the striker and neither got a challenge in. The handball was unlucky, but that's the way it goes.
Surely, we can find someone in the squad that can cover at left back and let Matt Ritchie play further up the field? He's wasted in defence.
A reality check all round, I'm afraid. We're just lucky that results didn't go too badly against us overall last night.

We might be letting less goals in but last night our problem was up front.!
Tubbs is League 2 and he showed it last night. Eddie Howe was right about him a few years ago.
Whats wrong with people crying for Demouge to come back when he wasnt good enough when he was here?
Whats happened to Grabbin cos lately he s rubbish!
Who mentioned Wes ( barn door) Thomas, Were you at the Wigan match cos he was worse than Tubbs!
Richie was man of the match for me.
I think Frazer will be quite special in the future.
We need a Striker on loan and we need one fast or say goodbye to the play offs.
I will be there on Saturday, with 1400 other AFCB but if its more of the same then I am not blind like others on here, if itsa loss then the season is over of us. At least I wont have to struggle to buy a ticket anymore

We at least had some shots which is a bonus compared to Saturday, but too many times the final ball was wrong, just hit rather than looking for a player.
Negatives were obviously no points, no goals and no clean sheet. We need to get the defence sorted again and build from there.
McQuoid had a mare as far as I am concerned as well. No passion, lack of effort and not strong enough.
Coventry although dangerous up front, were pretty ordinary and a couple of months ago we would have hammered them.
All teams are now going to play like this at DC so we must take chances when they arise and play more intelligently.
We must get at least a point on Saturday to stop the rot and get things going again.

We are really missing Elphick in the centre.
Daniels as well to some extent but in Ritchie we have a worthy replacement, but would obviously be preferred on the wing.
The next couple of games are massive and we need to start getting back to basics, especially at the back. A clean sheet for starters would be good.

Having hit the top of the league all clubs coming to DC are shutting up shop with 8 in the penalty box and trying to rough us up.
I'm tired of all Josh knocking. He is doing well and just lacks that confidence to shoot when he has a chance, then we'll see him back to the form he was in before Millwall ruined him. Eddie will get him back to his best.
As for the strikers....for heavens sake, someone try a shot!!!

We need another option up front, big strong lad, with a bit of pace, sadly not Fletch.
The one thing that amazed me most was when we brought Fraser on why did we not give him the ball? The one time he got the ball in the box he produced a quick snapshot. What can he do when we give him the ball?
Things could have been much worse and there still is a long way to go.
I'm on at 16/1 for promotion and looking forward to my pay out in May.

Good points: some quick pass and move play/our speed and mobility/Matt Ritchie/Ryan Fraser (who look like he doesn't mind taking a shot!!!). Disapointed with the final result but still looking forward to Orient where we pick it up again. UTC!

lockandload (whoever he/she is) writes "I left early last night, it was obvious we would lose". What an appalling, spoilt-brat attitude. At the moment we're neither clicking into top gear nor getting the rub of the green, but it's at times like these that true supporters stick with it and give the team a bit of encouragement; you have to experience the lows to appreciate the highs. The players gave it everything last night, which is really all you can ask; the true disappointment for me was not the result (these things happen, get over it) but the mass exodus from the exec seats in particular as soon as the penalty went in. If getting the early bus or avoiding the car park queues is more important than staying on for a few minutes to applaud 90 minutes of honest endeavour and no little skill, then I'm not sure the kneejerk reactors even deserve Championship football.
P.S this spoilt brat has his tickets for Leyton Orient ..have you or doesnt your support go that far?

Now I welcome the plastics as I would rather see a full stadium than a half empty one, but...... could we maybe have a 'plastic fans' only stand so the 4500-5000 loyal fans who go and support come what may can watch the whole game without being disturbed by those that want to leave early and not see the game out until the bitter end?
'Is there a fire alarm?' and 'We can see you sneaking out' could then be sang at each home game to the plastic stand between 80 minutes and full time.

Theres a lot of teenagers on here today
I left because I was **** off with Tubbs/Grabbin and their complete lack of success. I was **** off with the dream of going up is starting to fade.
I was **** off that Eddie Howe didnt seem to have a plan B.
I was **** off that Fletcher could have really broken them up if he was 5 years younger.
Finally I was **** off that I had a fat smelly bloke overlapping onto my seat.
But Hey, I will be there for the next home match as well as Leyton away on Saturday.
P.S I was there when we went down to 4000 home supporters watching the disaster called Groves/Brookes but I am a plastic

I was tempted to leave early as well but my mate was driving and he wouldn't leave, even though he had the hump as well.
So we stayed to the bitter end and gave the players some appaluse for their efforts.

This blip will hopefully come to an end against Orient on Saturday where nothing but a convincing win is going to put our season back on track. Another poor performance and defeat will turn a blip into a full blown crisis which if not dealt with quickly could see the good work after Groves' exit count for nothing. Not even a play off place.
