Cherries: Pitman responds to Wilson criticism (with video) (From Bournemouth Echo)

He was the worst, most incompetant, useless, naive referee I've ever seen at Dean Court. Worse even than Barry Knight and Singh.

The ref needs re-training, not just for this poor decision, a booking at the least, but for his general decision making and control of the game. However, Pitman is a big girls blouse and needs to grow up and start earning his money, lazy player always looking fall over too quickly.

At least two incidents make the comments from Wilson very hypocritical.

Firstly just before the half time whistle a Sheffield player goes down on the half way line like he has been shot rolling around holding his shin. The half time whistle blew and he got straight up and ran off down the tunnel. (Ref was right next to him as well).

Then in the second half their player goes down with a "head injury" close to the goal line. Trainer runs on at the Referees request as soon as he gets there the ref indicates that he will restart the game because the player is off the pitch so again he jumps up and rejoins the game.

The were falling over like skittles every time a Bournemouth player went anywhere near them and most of the time the ref fell for it.

The ref was obviously star struck by the "BIG" club from the north and was not strong enough to run the game.

Don't even get me started on the "corner" in the first half!!

I'd always had a lot of respect for Danny Wilson, but no longer. I thought his team were trying for a place at the Oscar's. Completely agree with your comments...

Have to agree with others. Sheffield United played an extremely physical game and 'collided' with our players at every opportunity.
Once they saw how hapless the referee was, they just upped their performance.
We probably were the better side, football wise, they just had the muscle advantage.

All managers will defend their own players, from the first minute yesterday they set out to spoil the game and wind our players up & it worked for them as it was the only way they were going to get anything out of the game plus we gave them a goal, but that was embarrassing from Brett to go down holding your face like that, we all saw it at the time and the video confirms it, I like Pitman but that ain't the first time he has gone down like that, Brett is right about their captain, all he did was get in Arters face from the start, snipping at him, little kicks off the ball, elbows, the ref was awful the worst, the Lino dreadful, it was a blatant handball and it was only the Lino that could of given it but as he had missed everything else that had happened he wasn't going to see that was he, we will bounce back all good teams do

I'm going to say it as I saw it: we could have played a lot better than we did, but it was better than at Preston last weekend. HOWEVER, that referee did not help at all. He made a lot of decisions one might speculate were unfairly in favour of Sheffield, such as the one above consistently throughout the match. If we had a fair number of decisions in our favour or had actually done the things that warranted all those free kicks/corners (rather than a couple of them), I'd say fair enough. The only thing that was consistent about this 'referee' was the number of times he looked over free kicks against us and noticed the ones in our favour.

If Pitman had been the one bumping this idiot down then I have no doubts the referee would have sent him off for violent conduct.

I sincerely hope that the club raises a formal complaint to the FA and League because I would seriously question the abilities of this referee - and that's something I rarely do.

The referee was,nt going to help us, he came from Lincoln 40 miles from sheffield. That says it all really.referee,s really do win or loose you games! Lets move on to Tuesday ,and after having watched the playback of yesterday,s game, we really do have to tighten up at the back?

Danny Wilson is an experienced old pro and Sheff Utd done a job on us. The ref allowed it to get out of hand. Their players left the foot in and time wasted nothing new there if a ref does not get a grip. The free kick when he blew after they picked up the ball first was unbelievable. Strong ref would have sorted it out had a word with both captains at times. That said we are looking a bit one dimensional upfront at the moment. Works well against most but come up against a physical and strong team we suffer a bit. We need to be able to mix it up a bit. Someone like Kitson or Fletcher in his prime or a blast from the past Big Trevor Aylott when the game requires it lets bully a few defenders. No panic two points off the top.

Having been a ref at a reasonably senior level I can assure you no refs at this level are bought (did you really mean that) and although I don't usually moan about referees I agree this one lost the game quite early on. Unfortunately some of our players (Brett in particular) let it get to them and spent too much energy on moaning at the officials which just played into Sheffield hands. Unfortunately this creates an air of dejection which only inspires the opposition to up their antics as they know they can get away with it. Sheffield conned the ref and did a number on us, hopefully we'll learn from it. Oh and Brett's collapse was embarrassing

My thoughts exactly, before yesterdays game i was tipping Sheff Utd for champions, however if their tactics is what it takes to get promoted, then sorry but i will be happy to stay L1. I really couldn't watch that style week on week out, win at all costs.!!!!.

Noone has commented about their goal. It should have been our free kick not theirs. The ref hadnt blown for a foul on Kitson, yet Kitson picked the ball up and the referee immediately blew and signalled it was theirs and not ours despite the hand ball. Cast mind back to Eunan O'Kane at Walsall!!!.

I see the video has been removed now. I guess because it made Brett look a plonker. Never seen such appalling play acting, I was embarrassed sitting nearby the incident.

I think the important part of wilsons quote"all we did is stand up and compete and leave the decisions to the ref"says it all.
In other words, push the boundaries of the laws to the limit(and beyond) and see if you can get away with it, which they did.How often do we see refs NOT cracking down on infringements(not just at L1 level)and a team get away with assault and robbery.
It`s also somewhat infuriating to have people come on here and say"oh you lost and so you blame the ref",perhaps they might keep up with recent posts and find that we also complain about bad refs when we win ,and we also graciously admit that sometimes the away side were robbed of a good result due to the ref.

Thing I found saddest of all yesterday was that a team like Sheff U with a history and pedigree like theirs don't have enough in their locker to rely on footballing skill to win matches but play so close to the unsavoury edge instead. I wonder if their fans have to watch that kind of thing every week - I know I wouldn't

I'm a Blade who was there yesterday so thought I would give my two cents. I can completely see why you were anger with the ref, there were a few times that I just laughed at some of the decisions we got. One in particular when the ref only gave us the free kick after Dave Kitson picked the ball up and decided it was a free kick.

However from a performance point of view, I was very happy with it. We were coming to a side second in the league and on a decent run so clearly you're no mugs. Granted there was time wasting at times, but it is nothing that every other side that has come to our place has done. For me it was a good solid away performance.

barry knight sparked a mini riot after the crewe game about 18 years ago. I remember our fans found his jeep parked outside the ground and gave it a shake.
I wonder if howe has launched a formal complaint? it's not going to change anything but it might make refs think twice about bias if they know we will report them

I also just want to defend brett's action. we were being bullied and cheated by the ref, lino and sheffield utd - he just tried playing them at their own game, but it only works for sheffield utd - that shows he (ref) is more bias than incompetent

When we played Sheff Utd we drew 0-0 but it sounds as though the tactics they used with you on saturday they did exactly the same to us when we played them. There players ran the game and the ref let them do it, constant rolling around feigning injury and time wasting. I didnt think they were a good side they were just big and physical and didnt play any football it was just a big punt up the pitch from the back four each time they got the ball and really boring to watch.
Their style of football is bad for the game but i suppose its about winning but no way would i go and watch that sort of football every week if i supported them.

Shall we look at Pitman's disgraceful actions? He's run into Collins and thrown himself to the floor trying to get Collins sent off. That wouldn't be acceptable on the King's Park on a Sunday, let alone in a professional game.

Let's also look at Painter sprinting to keep in Long's attempt to clear to touch to allow Murphy to get treatment. Gamesmanship of the highest order - yes, it wasn't a great clearance but he could have let it go out rather than seeking an advantage when we had a man down.

As for the free-kick when Kitson picked up the ball: wasn't that after the referee had played two advantages in quick succession for trips by your central midfielders?

Simply put - It was the worst refereeing performance I've seen at DC for years.

The Blades were cynical time wasters, who came with a game plan of 'only when necessary play football, the rest of the time we'll just niggle, feign injury, ref the game etc'. I expect teams to come here and stifle us like Pompey and occasionally give us a good game like Swindon, but the fare which was dished up by Sheff Utd was miserable to say the least. Maybe we shouldn't have expected anything else from a team which effectively got compensation for being crap.

Hate play acting and diving so hope Eddie speaks Pitman but maybe Brett was fed up seeing blades getting away with it? As for painter not putting the ball out perhaps he like many of us couldn't be sure if the injury was genuine.. Your guys went down a lot! Thought blades did a good job on us but the weak ref played in to your hands. Odd though thought the way blades started as an attacking side you looked very impressive at the start.

Like you, I'd not pay good money to watch tripe of the kind Sheff Utd served up, it may well get them promotion, but it's sad day for football when those antics win. I'll take lucky 1-0 wins all day long, but not based on conning the ref in the manner that happened Saturday. As my 1st post on the match said, I don't mind losing to a better team, but they weren't better, as many have said, they did a job on us and the ref and it worked. If THAT'S Championship football, let's stay where we are please!!! UTCIAD

It's a results business, if Sheff United are top at the end of the season, their fans won't give two hoots how they got there.

It's always good to see that everyone thinks the same about the pointless & useless officials at the game on Saturday! But as soon as Painter kept the ball in Murphy was straight back on his feet, we showed inexperience by being dragged down to your level and we paid the price, we try to win by playing football, a weak referee and linesman was not your fault it just helped you more than us, What Pitman did was embarrassing & the ref got that one spot on, we should of had a definate penalty but the Lino decided not to give it

I agree. A sensible comment which goes to show that we are not whingers nor are supporters of other clubs when they arrive at the same conclusion regardless of which club they happen to support.

Referees are like the rest of us thus prone to get the odd decision wrong but so many in one game points to a level of ineptitude beyond comprehension.

Agreed the referee was poor and Sheffield time wasted for the entirety of the match after they scored, but we had no cohesion anywhere on the pitch. Arter got man of the match, which about sums up how bad we were.

Not sure it can ever happen because it would mean leaving out Pugh, but i would love to see both Fraser and Ritchie in the side as attacking wingers a la Swansea's Routledge and Dyer with Pitman in the Michu role maybe!!

Well, Saturday’s result should have brought the rose tinted brigade down to earth.

As I have been saying for a while, a bad spell was bound to come. No team could be expected to continue that form through to the end of the season, but it’s what everyone on here was thinking. The dire performance against Pompey, and the streaky win against Crewe were the pre-cursers, followed by the reality check of 2 defeats. Saturday could be seen a mile off against the team who will most likely take the title.

The plain truth is that this AFCB team (large though the squad may be) is simply not good enough to go up. It contains players like McQuoid, Pitman and Pugh who (much as I might like them) think they are better than they really are. That rubs off on other players, along with all the hype about being the best team in the league. Where did that come from ? Eddie has worked wonders getting the team to punch above its weight, but you are realistically looking at a finish between 7th and 10th, depending on other results. This is what I have predicted all along, and it would be a magnificent achievement given the appalling start under Groves, and the woefully unbalanced squad he bequeathed to Eddie.

That’s not to say mistakes haven’t been made because everyone is human, even EH. Barnard and Zubar should have been retained, and defenders brought in during January instead of more wingers, but a top 10 finish would still be a great result. You can’t build a promotion team just like that. It takes time. Eddie needs to form a squad of his players which he will probably achieve during the close season. Even then he may need 2 more seasons to mount a serious promotion challenge. There are no turnkey solutions. Let’s hope Mr Demin appreciates that.

And of course, if you put this team in the Championship, it would prop up the league. I know I will be told we would get £2M or something, but that is loose change when it comes to buying seven or eight Championship players, which is what we would need to have any chance of staying there. How big is Mr Demin’s wallet ?

Glad I'm not Harry Arter reading that quote! We huffed and puffed but we didn't really trouble their goalkeeper. We need to have shots from all over the park, just like we used to in the good old days. Strangely we have scored the most goals in League One. We've just let too many in the other end!
Must win on Tuesday night to avoid slipping out of the Play Offs.

You have the right to call us whining softies but would you care to come back on this site after you have been at the receiving end of a lousy referee/linesman and your team has lost 1-0 and tell us how pleased you are about it!

To all you blade fans i dont even support Bournemouth and im afraid your style of football is boring.
You are in the Danny Wilson second season syndrone so you will have another blip yet he does it at every club so be prepared with about 7 or 8 games to go he does it every time then the drinking culture will start.

Their football may have been boring but who got the points? They came with a game plan to nullify us and win ugly and they did it. I'd of had a few beers afterwards in their position too. We played the prettier stuff and clearly most of our players were better footballers, but we had to be cleverer, break them down and ask more questions of their goalkeeper. We've now played for 3 hours and not scored - hopefully that'll be rectified tomorrow night with the help of a better ref and a lino with reasonable eyesight.
Not having Charlie Daniels both defending and going forward is a huge miss but that's the position we're in so we'll have to get on with it.
Onwards and hopefully upwards, let's get behind the team tomorrow night - UTCIAD.
