Cherries: Howe's men blunted by the Blades
5:26pm Saturday 23rd February 2013 in Sport
By Ian Wadley
CHERRIES suffered their first home League One defeat since September as Jamie Murphy’s early goal earned Sheffield United a 1-0 win this afternoon.
Unbeaten in third-flight action at Dean Court since Eddie Howe’s return, Cherries saw that proud record ended by the resilient and well-organised Blades.
Barry Robson hit the crossbar for the visitors before Cherries duo Lewis Grabban and Harry Arter both came close in a blistering start to the promotion showdown.
But after Murphy had found the net from close range to give the Bramall Lane outfit a one-goal advantage, there proved no way back for Cherries as they were condemned to back-to-back losses.
Demonstrating the close nature of the division, the win lifted Sheffield United to the summit, while Cherries dropped to sixth.
Cherries boss Eddie Howe made one change following the 2-0 loss at Preston last time out, with Eunan O’Kane restored to central midfield in place on Shaun MacDonald, who dropped to the bench.
The Blades were unsurprisingly unchanged on the back of three successive wins and their vastly-experienced line-up included seasoned Premier League performers such as Danny Higginbotham and Dave Kitson.
With plenty on the line for the promotion rivals, the match burst into life at a furious pace.
Cherries’ defence was almost unlocked within three minutes courtesy of a route-one raid. Higginbotham’s aerial ball found Robson galloping into space via a Kitson flick-on and the former Celtic man reduced Shwan Jalal to a spectator as he crashed a dipping left-footer off the crossbar.
Relieved to escape the close call, Cherries’ response was immediate.
A surging run from the recalled O’Kane saw him scamper into enemy territory and when his clever pass teed up the onrushing Lewis Grabban, it took a solid parry from George Long to deny Cherries’ leading marksman.
Still on the front foot, Cherries were then denied after a trademark corner routine had baffled the Blades. After Brett Pitman’s drive had been blocked, Harry Arter latched on to the loose ball and launched a ferocious drive, only to see visiting skipper Michael Doyle produce a sensational goal-line clearance.
Higginbotham’s header forced Jalal into a diving save before Grabban was yellow carded amid growing frustrating from Cherries towards the decisions of referee Gary Sutton.
Those frustrations grew further when the Blades took a 20th-minute lead through Murphy, who profited from a Marcos Painter slip before lashing home the rebound after his initial close-range shot had hit the post.
Danny Wilson’s men then made life even more difficult for Cherries as the visitors packed the midfield and looked solid, hard working and strong.
Despite plenty of possession, Cherries found chances few and far between and lacked an incisive, cutting edge against the Blades.
A storming run by Arter late in the opening period was the closest they came, but he was crowded out just as he had shaped to shoot.
Brighton loan man Painter was taken off at half-time for the second match in a row, with Howe introducing Josh McQuoid and moving Matt Ritchie to left-back.
Cherries appeared better for the change and looked far brighter during the early skirmishes of the second half.
An exceptional Pitman pass split the Blades defence and almost landed perfectly for the onrushing Grabban, only for the frontman to be deceived by the bounce at a crucial moment.
As the fractious element of the contest continued, referee Sutton deemed no action necessary after Pitman had hit the deck in an off-the-ball incident involving Blades defender Neill Collins.
The mood of Cherries' players and supporters was not improved when the Lincolnshire official then waved away a vociferous – albeit ambitious looking – penalty claim after O’Kane’s cross had been blocked at close range.
With Cherries still struggling to find a way through, Ryan Fraser was called from the bench to make his Cherries debut as Pitman made way.
Matt Tubbs was then thrown on in place of Grabban as Howe put his faith in the new-look attacking duo of Tubbs and McQuoid, supported by wide men Pugh and Fraser.
Blades defender Harry Maguire, solid as a rock at centre-half, forced keeper Long into a nervous tip over the bar when he almost sliced a dangerous Ritchie cross into his own net.
And while McQuoid and Tubbs showed signs of sparking Cherries into life, Maguire’s slice was the only serious piece of work for Long as the Blades held on to win a hard-fought yet disappointing clash.
Cherries: (4-4-2) Jalal; Francis, Cook, Seaborne, Painter (McQuoid, h-t); Ritchie, Arter, O’Kane, Pugh; Grabban (Tubbs, 73), Pitman (Fraser, 68). Unused subs: Hughes, Fogden, MacDonald, Allsop (g/k).
Booked: Grabban, Arter
Blades: (4-4-2) Long; McMahon, Maguire, Collins, Higginbotham; Robson (Poleon, 85), Doyle, McDonald, Flynn; Kitson, Murphy. Unused subs: Westlake, Hill, Ironside, McFadzean, De Girolamo, Coyne (g/k).
Booked: Robson, Doyle
Referee: Gary Sutton (Lincolnshire)

No surprise at the AFCB result really. This is what happens when you have key players injured.
.
Against lesser opposition we may have gotten away with it. After all we were playing Sheff Utd (with the second best away record in the league) and not Christchurch or Downton.
.
I do not expect too much on Tuesday either as Coventry are no mugs.
.
Can't help feeling that we need more physical presence up front as Pitman and Grabben are too short. A target man may be a requirement.
.
I can't see things improving until Elphick and Daniels are fit to take the field.
.

We are definitely missing Elphick and Daniels at the back and the lack of the latter is also having a detrimental effect on Pughy as well.
No denying that the ref was poor and don't get me started on Sheff Utd's gamesmanship.... I really hate teams that conduct themselves like that.

BLATANT penalties not given, let alone all the corners, free kicks and throw ins. Credit to Harry Arter for actually staying on the pitch, I'd of lost it!! Sheffields tactics had out of desperation and they succeeded so they'd say it worked. but a strong, decent referee would not of been suckered in. They were lucky to have 11 players left on the pitch. Nothing to do with sour grapes, simply pure fact. As I said, I don't mind losing to a better team, but we didn't!!! UTCIAD
We did not pass the ball as well as we can but I have to say that a referee of that calibre refereeing a South American football match would not make it home!!!! He was an insult to football.
Like you I have no problem to lose to a better team but as I said few days back we could lose the game simply on a poor referee decision alas my words have come true.
Many thanks for your condolences, sad as it is he is now in a better place and free from pain.

Let's not get sidetracked by pointless arguments about an admittedly poor referee. The bottom line is that Sheffield United won deservedly because they were marginally less poor than we were. Desperately disappointing game in a surprisingly flat atmosphere - too many Bournemouth fans ranting at the officials instead of getting behind the team?

The game was pretty short on entertainment, in fact if it wasn't for the poor refereeing and resultant aggro between the players id have been bored and frozen stiff.
I liked the look of Fraser when he came on and Ritchie is a live wire but not yet in tune with the rest of the team. Agree we miss Elphick and Daniels badly.
Still rest of results went ok and although we dropped four places we are still well in the mix and a win against Cov midweek who are on a poor run will put things right.

Back to todays game, yes we were pretty poor,Sheff Utd were strong, savvy and bullied us whilst crying to the referee for everything, yes the ref and the East Stand lino didn't have a clue between them but still don't think they were responsible for us losing.I think the players are obviously affected by the loss of Tommy and Charlie as the defence has started to look hesitant in possesion but need to shake their heads and start getting back on their game, need Pughey back to his tricky best and,for the time being, will have to keep Matt at left back as Painter looks too rusty from his lack of football,(thought he was at fault for the goal today).
Anyway, here's hoping to normal service being resumed on Tuesday!
P.S Shminto,it's fine predicting score lines if you want too,it's a free country after all,but you always say were going to lose.We never here a peep out of you when we're winning but plenty of "i told you so" when we inevitably lose sometimes.Just don't sound so bloody triumphant when we do!

My goodness that was the worst display of refereeing I have seen for many a season. It did affect the result and if he isn't demoted to conference league or Sunday morning football I will be making a formal complaint to the FA. But let's not forget we only had 1 shot on goal and that was in the first few minutes, we must shoot more! It's alright playing good football to the opposition box but unless we pull the trigger there's no point. Pitman, wake up and wise up, you have to work harder. Painter, please go back to Brighton. Arter, please pass to our players. Having a moan, just so disappointed we are loosing our momentum for promotion.

As good as the present team is it lacks one/two players who have a mind of their own and can change the managers tactics. I remember the 1987 3rd div championship team had more than one who did take things into their own hands when the chips were down. Christmas/new years of that team we had lost at home to Gillingham, gone to Bristol and won 3-0 on boxing day and all the forwards were out injured 24 hours later at home to Fulham. Twice behind, Tony Pulis, Sean O’Driscoll and Mark Newson made changes and I remember Newson arguing with ‘Arry but the players won out and the cherries won 3-2 late. These same players and Willo also took charge on NewYears day at home to Swindon we won 1-0. As I said as good as the current players are, I believe we are lacking a brain with determination to shake things up. Funny how years later Pulis and O’Driscoll who held sway on the field are now decent managers.

We have been on an outstanding run in the last few months resulting in us getting to top spot. Sheffield were on a shocking run before their recent three wins taking them to the top. We are currently on a blip, a few players are injured and we are trying to bed in a few signings and there is no reason we can't go on another winning run before the end of the season.
Whether we get automatic promotion, a play off spot or nowt remains to be seen, but still all to play for.
Tranmere have been on a terrible run and yet they had thumping away win today.

Now the real reason we lost.We gifted a goal to them and then failed to penetrate their defence for the rest of the game. As one of the guys in our row said at the end, quite rightly, we've lost our spark. We were lucky to beat Crewe and Portsmouth and we were second best today.
All those over-excited people who thought we would win the league must now calm down and hope we make the play offs.
The real team of the season is of course Yeovil. Hard to to take but true.
We are the best footballing side in League 1 but we need a big centre forward, a big thug inmidfield and Zubar back in defence.

Not all doom and gloom re players. Think Ritchie showed that he is a better bet at left back now than Painter. Do think though teams have sussed us out now so need a plan B. Fraser looked really quick in the few glimpses he had so would start with him now. Think MacDonald's skill in attacking should see him return too.

Todays defeat for the record was not down to defensive frailties as you predicted, more to do with lack of drive in the midfield. Arter & O'kane were no match for Sheff Utd's 5 man midfield and we just didn't turn up first half.
Macca should have come on as he has the vision to unlock what was a slow Sheff defence who played a very high line, Grabban & Pitman just couldn't get in behind them.

My experience of that is if the ref is having an off day both teams suffer but you do notice it more for your own side and particularly when you are 0-1 down or worse.

My experience of that is if the ref is having an off day both teams suffer but you do notice it more for your own side and particularly when you are 0-1 down or worse.
Not the end of your promotion hopes yet, but the wheel is wobbling slightly.
You were warned about PNE, looks like the wheels are wobbling on your TRAP as well.!!!!!!!.
As I said before I do think that will do us a favour - time to regroup and re settle after the things we have just gone through.
I think you lots expectations have had taken a reality check too.
Watch those wheels on that 'bathchair' of yours ol' man .. touchee . :o/
3pts against Cov.is a must - or confidence and league postion is at risk.
Bye

I think if we look like playing them in the play off's, Pugh for example should learn some Sumo holds, to prevent himself being bodily thrown to the floor, because he sure as hell won't be getting the penalty that SHOULD of been given to him if God help us we had the same ref again!!! Looking at the You Tube Video of the Brett incident, he certainly wasn't head butted, but it certainly was a foul IMHO, and no surprise, just waved away by that ref...
We were beaten fair and square! Furthermore, Pitmanns behaviour (acting as if he'd been head butted) was embarassing and a disgrace. There shouldn't be any tolerance of that kind of behaviour at our club.

Firstly there isn't a poster on here who wouldn't have pulled my hand off if at the start of the season I'd offered them Cherries in sixth place and just two points off the top going into March.
Yes guys just two points oiff the top despite two straight defeats. Get real no one is running away with this league our chances of promotion automatic or othrwise are no less now than they were a when we were top.
Yes we need to steady the ship but you can be sure Eddie will do that.
So lets stop carping about such a terrible record ( three defeats i twenty three games is awful isn't it.)
Just get behind the team when they need us most and play your parts in getting us up instead of carping.
