Cherries: Even the best teams lose, says Howe
7:00am Monday 18th February 2013 in Sport
By Ian Wadley
PHILOSOPHICAL Eddie Howe has issued a timely reminder in the wake of a rare Cherries defeat: “Even the best teams in the world lose from time to time.”
The Cherries manager was speaking after watching his team suffer only their second reverse in 22 league matches under his charge.
Howe admitted his high-flying outfit had dipped below their usual high standards on their way to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Preston North End.
Stuart Beavon and Bailey Wright fired the managerless hosts to a deserved victory as two first-half goals settled Saturday’s contest at Deepdale.
Howe is adamant Cherries have the character to bounce back and admits every team will endure an off day.
He said: “I don’t think you can dwell on one performance. One performance never defines your season.
“This was a disappointing game for us. We have had it before and, no doubt, we will have it again.
“What you have to do is try to learn from it and make sure you put right anything you felt was an issue.
“We have certainly got the characters in the team to do that. The lads have been excellent and a joy to work with.
“On Saturday, they fell below the standards they set themselves but, in the main, I can’t be critical of them at all.
“It was probably the first time where I felt we had just not matched our intensity levels, off the ball and with the ball, that we normally hit.
“We are a team still learning and developing and even the best teams have bad days. Even the best teams in the world lose from time to time. It is just making sure you keep them to a minimum.”
Howe added: “It is two teams going at each other every week and we have no divine right to win any game.
“We are there to be shot at and teams will raise their game. You could see the reaction of the Preston people afterwards and that is the kind of reaction we get now wherever we go.
“People want to beat us and every team is motivated to perform. So, we need to make sure we do the basics right which, perhaps, we didn’t on Saturday for the first time.”
Cherries host promotion rivals Sheffield United, Coventry and Doncaster in upcoming matches.
Howe added: “It is a crucial part of the season and that is why we need everyone around Bourne-mouth to unite and support us.”

You have to dust yourself off, re-focus and go on another winning run.
I'm sure Eddie will analyse what went wrong and learn from it just like he did before.

.
Secondly, with ref to my post in Friday, Preston fired their manager recently and therefore were rejuvinated and had to prove themselves to any new manager, and what better stage than in front of the league leaders. In addition, we have Daniels and Elphick missing, you can get away with it for a while but then the absences will catch up with you,
.
I cannot see more than a draw against Sheff Utd at best. The next three games will shape our season. If we drop points against them then it is season over.
.
Let's hope Mr Painter hits the floor running.

As for the defeat on Saturday I believe that Ed was right. We have played three games in a week with all the traveling involved, so fatique is one factor.

We will beat Sheff Utd as well as Coventry the following Tuesday to keep our promotion push firmly on track.

We will get promoted because we are a very very good side with a superb manager and a very supportive board.

We won at franchise against 10 men and all those penalties against Crewe.
.
It's all very well saying you have to win when not playing well, but that can't last. This is the bad spell that was coming.
.
I remain concerned about the defence and still can't understand the transfer window activity. We had Daniels out and Cook at the time under threat of jail, yet we brought in only Seabourne and farmed out Zubar. And we brought in 2 wingers.
.
I think the team must have been reading all the tosh on this site about us being the best team in the league and how we were going to win the league. Some are still writing this now ! I think you will see the best side visit Dean Court on Saturday, and their bad spell is behind them !
.
Sorry, but I think we are looking at play-offs at best. If the season falls away now, we will look back to the transfer window with regret.

Daniels is the key and without him bursting down the wing overlapping Pugh we don't have a left wing presence any more. Ritchie looks alright but doesn't stand out in our squad. And then we get in a left back who is unfit and not good enough to warm the bench at Brighton. Need to win on Saturday make no mistake! Come on you reds!!!!!!
But it's not just one game is it ? Pompey and Crewe (by all accounts) were poor performances.

ontee,we can't play like Barcelona and Brazil circa 1970 all the time, indeed with teams coming to Dean Court and sitting behind the ball, for example Portsmouth, you have to excercise something called patience as we did before coming away with 3 points and as for your winning against Franchise with 10 men comments i believe we were already 1 goal to the good before the thug Lowe tried to part Tommy with his leg.I suppose you didn't think they were penalties either against Crewe?People like you really haven't got a clue and should push off and support someone else.Your opinions are worthless and treacherous.Bet you loved it when Groves was in charge!

As liked as Zubar was by the supporters he has never been Eddie's preferred choice. Considering we have risen from the relegation zone to top stop in Zubar's absence, you can't criticise Eddie's judgement.
As for the Lincoln based 'Prophet of Doom', you really should stick to your 'scouting' job and spare us your pearls of boredom. If Eddie is interested in your Crystal 'Misery' Ball I'm sure he'd ask you for your advice.
We're still top of the league! Remember, points win prizes, not games in hand! Up the Cherries!!
