Perrett's Verdict: Crewe 1 Cherries 2

PEN PAL: Brett Pitman celebrates the first of his two goals PEN PAL: Brett Pitman celebrates the first of his two goals

THE wry smile said it all, the one-liner spoke volumes.

As Eddie Howe prepared to conduct his post-match press conference, he knew full well Cherries had pulled off a smash and grab at Gresty Road tonight.

Having played second fiddle to the Railwaymen for much of the contest, particularly during the first half, Cherries looked destined to leave south Cheshire with a share of the spoils.

And for the majority of the locals, aggrieved with referee Richard Clark for awarding Cherries a contentious penalty, a solitary point was more than they would have deserved.

As it was, Brett Pitman showed the natives no mercy when he squeezed home the spot-kick to give Cherries a 59th-minute lead.

However, once Mathias Pogba had restored parity with a thumping close-range header 11 minutes from time, justice appear-ed to have been done.

Step forward Pitman again though.

His stunning volley, which had been worth the entrance fee alone, not only earned Cherries victory but also took them to the League One summit – from 21st to top spot in just four months.

“The best teams always find a way to win,” said Howe, his words apt as Cherries climbed to their highest place under him during his two spells in charge.

Asked to assess his team’s performance, Howe replied: “Dogged, determined and with a lot of heart, fight and spirit. It wasn’t our best technically and it was a really difficult surface. It was a really big result for us and the lads showed real spirit.

“We had to soak up a bit of pressure and didn’t keep the ball well enough. When they equalised, we wondered how we would respond and the players found another burst of energy.

“Brett came up with a special goal. It was a great finish, typical Brett, and it won us the game.

“Away from home, it is easy to find ways to get beaten, even in tight games and it is not always easy to score a late goal. Our supporters were magnificent and gave the players a crucial boost.”

In typical Howe fashion, the achievement of guiding Cherries to pole position was met with a grounded response: “It is nice and I like to see it.

“It has been a long road and the lads have won a lot of games to get to where we are. It hasn’t been easy by any means and they deserve all the credit.

“I don’t want to bring things down a peg or two but now we don’t want to get caught. That is the challenge because there is still a long way to go and a lot of points to fight for. We want to make sure nobody overtakes us.”

Cherries were thankful to goalkeeper Shwan Jalal for saving Luke Murphy’s rasping drive inside the opening 60 seconds.

And after Chuks Aneke had squandered a glorious chance to fire Crewe ahead after 16 minutes, the travelling support must have sensed it was going to be Cherries’ day, the Arsenal loan star scuffing his shot tamely into Jalal’s arms.

Mark Ellis also went close to breaking the deadlock when his low drive from 20 yards flashed past the upright, while Cherries were restricted to half-chances from Harry Arter and Richard Hughes.

Jalal’s smart reaction save prevented A-Jay Leitch-Smith from drawing first blood for Crewe, the goalkeeper pushing his first-time strike around the post at the start of the second half.

Cherries had an escape when Murphy’s free-kick from the edge of the 18-yard came back off the crossbar with Jalal beaten six minutes after the restart.

The visitors took the lead when Pitman coolly converted from the spot after referee Clark had angered the home crowd by pointing to the spot when Pogba tangled with Matt Ritchie, the award looking flimsy.

Crewe goalkeeper Steve Phillips then clawed away Lewis Grabban’s header, which had looked destined for the top, before the hosts deservedly drew level when Pogba rose to meet Kelvin Mellor’s cross.

However, their joy was short-lived as Pitman swept home a sublime volley, fastening on to Steve Cook’s cross from the right and leaving Phillips clutching little more than south Cheshire air.

Crewe boss Steve Davis, who felt his team had been “robbed”, declined to comment when asked for his view of the penalty for fear of earning the wrath of the FA.

Howe said: “My first view was that I didn’t think it was but my players have told me it was so I will have to see it again. It was given and Brett tucked it away well.”

Yes Crewe had good chances through the game but we had plenty of the game in spells on both halfs.

While they perhaps had the best chances in the first half we made plenty of our own.

The first goal was always going to be crucial and I couldnt believe the penalty.

It felt like our night and it feels like our season.

Ritchie was magnificent. Jalal best game for ages.

With Tranmere and Doncaster's seasons going off the rails based on recent form, Swindon being in a mess with not being able to buy players and having to sell their best one to us, Coventry losing their manager and MK Dons now completely out of the picture, things look very very good.

Sheffield United, Brentford and Yeovil are still in it but we are better than all of them.

Basically if we keep things going the way they have been since Sir Eddie Howe took over, we will be Champions.

Who is up for calling the new fourth stand, THE EDDIE HOWE stand?? :)

I like the 4th stand naming idea but we should leave a space as follows:

"The Eddie Howe Stand"

This is for when Eddie gets knighted and we can then insert 'Sir' in there.

Also I think we should also have The "Eddie Mitchell Bar" in the refreshements area!!! :D

What a great feeling. Eddie Howe can be a proud manager not only for what he has brought to this club, but also for what he instills in his players.

I just cannot believe he was allowed to go and the squad he put together flogged on the cheap.
The two players who remain from the initial group continue to serve Cherries with dedication in spite of the unfair deals they were offered when also-rans were brought in for silly money and the faithfull were being unfairly vilified for being greedy.

The way we are playing now, I can only see us in the Championship next season.

It would seem that Brett's 2nd goal was "Vintage" Brett, and something that has been missing from his game since his return. He can score the spectacular and win games, hopefully that will give him more confidence to go and repeat it a few more times this season. He's had a lot of catching up to do not having played for months, and it sounded as though he was helping out all over the pitch. I'm not singling out just one player, I just think Brett needs a special mention as having stated before he, like some others, was not that impressive against Pompey. So credit here credits due.
TOP Spot is an incredible achievement, management and the whole squad can be truly proud. Can we stay there??? that's the Big question!!! I believe we can... UTCIAD

When Eddie and Jason returned, I did say that with the squad we had (who I believed to be a really talented group who were under achieving big time), it would not surprise me if we ended up in an automatic place. Now saying that, I did think it might be possible to hit top spot with an away win at Tranmere, our last game, I never in my wildest dreams reckoned on doing it in February, I mean, who could be THAT crazy.

Why turn a great time at the moment for this club, between the pro-mitchell's having a dig at the people that were concerned at the way Mitchell was running the club at the time. Thankfully for all of us things have changed.

Denim's money has turned this club around and let's not forget who chased EH & JT away in the first place, sold off all our squad and appointed Groves. Nuff said me thinks.

No apologies from me, Mitchell deserved all the stick he got at the time. Having sold-off almost a whole team of talented players he then saddled us with the worst management duo at Dc in many a year.
In fact Mitchell should be thanking us for the near riot outside the ground after the Walsall defeat. At least it brought everything to a head with Max forcing Mitchell to make the necessary change that kick-started this miraculous turn around in results.

Absolutely brilliant, went to bed very happy!! :) With Tranmere and Doncaster's seasons going off the rails based on recent form, Swindon being in a mess with not being able to buy players and having to sell their best one to us, Coventry losing their manager and MK Dons now completely out of the picture, things look very very good. Sheffield United, Brentford and Yeovil are still in it but we are better than all of them. Basically if we keep things going the way they have been since Sir Eddie Howe took over, we will be Champions. Who is up for calling the new fourth stand, THE EDDIE HOWE stand?? :) UTCIAD

There is already a locomotive named "HOWE" - Class 50, number 50 023. BR were ahead of themselves for once!

We are in a false positition at the top due to games played, but if we can get the right results during the next few weeks we will be ok.
we need to sort out the ground capacity soon as funds are leaking out of the pockets, but i am sure any investers ( Russians) would of looked at this before investing, so i guess news will be on the horizon soon. We seem to be lucky at the moment with results going our way and a lucky win last night, long may it last.
