Cherries: Howe condemns 'disgusting' Lowe tackle
9:02am Sunday 3rd February 2013 in Sport
By Ian Wadley
ANGRY boss Eddie Howe slammed red-carded Ryan Lowe for his “disgusting challenge” on Tommy Elphick in Cherries’ 3-0 win at MK Dons yesterday.
Cherries’ stand-in skipper Elphick is facing a scan to assess the extent of a knee injury following the ugly incident which overshadowed an impressive victory at stadium:mk.
Lewis Grabban fired Cherries in front before tempers flared in the closing stages of the first half.
Lowe, who had earlier clashed with Elphick, was sent off after flying into a two-footed, late lunge on the defender which sparked a furious reaction among Cherries’ players and staff.
Marc Pugh netted a second for Cherries before the interval and Harry Arter scored a stunning third to seal a convincing win which lifted the Dorset outfit to third in League One.
MK Dons striker Lowe apologised when he faced the media after the match and MK manager Karl Robinson confirmed his player had been fined.
Howe said: “I thought it was a disgusting challenge – really, really poor.
“Tommy has had injury problems in his career and I hope and pray that he is not badly hurt.
“We don’t know at the moment but it is a knee problem. We will wait and see.
“To do that to a fellow professional is really poor.
“My players did very well to keep their cool and keep their discipline and not turn it into a fight because no one wanted to see that.”
Asked if Cherries could take any encouragement from Elphick managing to hobble off the pitch before being replaced by Matt Ritchie, Howe replied: “Sometimes, that can be deceiving. I think I did the same at Portsmouth and wasn’t seen again for two years so I wouldn’t read anything into that.
“We will have to assess the damage and see what injury he has got.”
Lowe said: “I have let down everyone – the club, my manager, my team-mates, myself and my family.
“I am just disappointed in myself. The tackle was outrageous and I should never have gone for it.
“It is not my character and it is not me. It was in our half and it was just a moment of madness and all I can do is apologise.
“I just hope the lad (Elphick) is all right. I will see Eddie Howe before he goes and apologise to him. I am a man, I am not a young boy, I will get on with it and apologise.”
Howe added: “I respect him for coming out and making that comment but, really, it is Tommy that he should be apologising to.”
Discussing Cherries’ victory, Howe said: “It was a good performance.
“I was really pleased we got the early goal. I think that made a big difference to us and settled us down.
“We came with a game-plan to frustrate them and play a certain way, which I think you have to against a good team, which MK Dons are.
“To come here and win 3-0 was really pleasing and I was very impressed with the players and how they responded and adapted to the different challenges in front of them.
“It is not easy with 11 against 10 and you see countless times that the 10 beat the 11 so we still had a lot to do at half-time, but the players were very professional in their approach.”

The fact that some MK Dons actually applauded Lowe as he left the pitch says all there is to say about them.

Surely if the tackle on Elphick isn't bad enough then the kick at Francis should decide it! I am not saying that he should go to jail but he should definitely face a lot worse than a 3 match ban. I also notice that he kicked Elphick in the first event which led to them going toe to toe. Lowe was thrusting his shoulder into Tommy as well. With all this available on tv to the FA they should act. That is not the sort of behaviour that should be tolerated in any sport.
Surely with an intended assault such as this most certainly was,it should matter not if it was on a football pitch or outside a nightclub and committed by a different type of THUG ??...It was assault pure and simple !!...

Could our Chairmen think about reporting this to the Police please - an official complaint for assault, that`s what it was, premeditated assault, nothing to do with football, the man is a thug and should be treated accordingl;y.

I felt sick at the stadium when it happened. Our crowd reaction was a momentary quiet, then sadness. For this to happen at all anywhere is unforgivable. The player knew the gravity of the situation and walked off immediately with the ref making sure he got out of the way as quickly as possible. The authorities should deal with it. The reaction of our team did us credit.

Have a look at the picture in todays Sun, Lowe's face says all you need to know. He couldn't handle the fact he was being dominated by Tommy and lost the plot. If Tommy is out for a period of time, Lowe should be banned for that period + 3 games.

I gather that MK Dons have fined him too, so all we can do now is hope that Elphick isn't injured long term.

As for Zoobs availabilty(this may be wrong)but I recall hearing them discuss this situation on Solent and that unless an immediate recall clause is included in the loan,a player can only be recalled once the first month is up.
After watching the reports both on sky and beeb,I notice that their fans weren`t very gracious in response to our first two goals, several of them employing hand gestures. There was a big fatty in a blue hoody sat right behind the goal, unhappy at Grabbs goal, however come MP`s goal(first half added on time)and he was no-where to be seen, obviously gone for his half time refreshment-can you imagine the look of the staff in the refreshment kiosk-`here comes big old fatty(again),best ring up the kitchens and get another 20 pies and a gallon of coke down here quick!`

This is also why I don't think we will make the play-offs. Had they not had a man sent off and virtually pushed 2 goals into the net for us, we would have struggled.
.
Have you noticed we are the league's top scorers, but you have to go down to 9th place to find a team that has conceded more. Yet we get rid of Zubar !
.
We may be 3rd but it's a fasle position. We have to play the top sides and others behind us have games in hand. Watch Yeovil !

OK, so it's fair to say look at our record, but these misses could of proved very costly and indeed they still could. Our goal difference may end up being vital, we are well off Swindles and had we slaughtered Franchise and Crewe it would of made big strides eating into the difference. We can bemoan defensive mistakes as much as anyone else. I have thought for a long time an Automatic place was not out of the question and I'm even more convinced now... UTCIAD
This is why we all wanted to keep Zubar. I'm sorry but I just can't see why EH let Zubar go. He really must not rate him. We were going to be short there anyway if Cook goes down. I feel that even if there is a recall clause Eddie will not use it.

Look at the teams above us. We have already beaten Tranmere and Doncaster recently. If you think we were struggling before they had a man sent off you live in a dream. I do agree that we should have kept Zubar!!

a)..as we are only a quarter of the way into the second half of the season all the other top teams will also have to play most of the other top teams therefore taking points off each other
and b)-the teams chasing may well have games in hand but they haven`t won those points yet;the reasoning being that most managers, players and supporters would rather have the points than the games in hand.

r the reason some managers fancy players and some don't so you need to get over your Zubar crush and move on.Shame i haven't got the crystal ball that you've got where you knew Tommy would be the victim of a vicious assault by that horrible Lee Hugh's clone Lowe. With the emergency loan window opening soon if things got desperate i'm sure Eddie would bring in the necessary replacements if not recall Zubar.I think you should put a little more trust in our manager,he's done ok so far.
And you really are dreaming if you think we're in a false position.I remember having games in hand and the pressure mounting so those games aren't worth anything till they're played.I think i've read enough of your opinions now to relegate them to the "OUT" tray.
