Cherries complete big-money deal for Ritchie (updated)

CHERRIES have tonight completed the signing of Swindon Town’s jewel in the crown Matt Ritchie, the Daily Echo can exclusively reveal.

The 23-year-old winger finalised terms on a three-and-a-half year contract after the two clubs agreed a transfer fee of around £500,000.

Ritchie opened talks with Cherries after the Dorset outfit met Swindon’s valuation earlier today.

News of Cherries’ renewed interest in the former Portsmouth trainee was revealed on the Daily Echo’s Twitter feed this afternoon.

Initial reports suggested Cherries had tabled an offer in the region of £600,000, although the final figure is believed to be closer to £500,000.

The move sees Cherries successfully end their 14-month pursuit of the left-footed wide man.

Sought-after Ritchie was also understood to have been a target for a host of Championship clubs with Cherries fending off competition from the likes of Crystal Palace, Charlton, Bolton and Bristol City.

Ritchie has this season enhanced his growing reputation, his nine goals and nine assists helping the Robins force their way into the promotion picture.

The gifted Gosport-born ace also played a starring role last season and was named League Two’s player of the year as Swindon romped to the title.

Cherries had a bid of £500,000 turned down by Swindon during former boss Lee Bradbury’s time at the helm in December 2011.

And they have since been linked with several swoops for the pint-sized winger, who trained with Cherries in 2008 when Kevin Bond was in charge.

Current Cherries boss Eddie Howe, who worked alongside Bond, is a Ritchie admirer and could see him as the final piece of the jigsaw as the club bids to win promotion this season.

Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio last week said the Wiltshire outfit had not received any offers for Ritchie and was adamant the player was not for sale.

Ritchie had 18 months to run on his existing contract with the Robins and Di Canio claimed the club had rejected an offer of £900,000 for his services in the summer.

However, the landscape has since altered with Swindon having recently appointed advisors to restructure their finances – with debts thought to be around £13million.

It is believed the addition of Ritchie will not be the end of Cherries’ activity before the transfer window closes at 11pm tomorrow night.

And while the club could be looking to further bolster its squad for a promotion push over the closing months of the season, departures could also be expected.

Striker Wes Thomas, the subject of intense transfer speculation for the past couple of months, and midfielder Lorenzo Davids could be on the move.

If the price was right we might sell I suppose - but don't think £500K is enough - unless that was the first installment and the next £500 K + to follow within 31 days.

All a bit up in the air at the moment with the 'takeover' business in process.

Anyway Mike Oxbig hope you aint spent all that Winter Fuel allowance of yours down there in Cocoon Land - there's another cold snap on the way probably

If true, i can only guess the new owners of Swindon have looked at the books and want to reduce the wage bill. I suspect Ritchie is one of your top earners, but realisticly it would not make good business sense to sell to a rival, particulary at this crucial stage of the season. I believe this is just mischief making from the local papers. Not sure he would fit in here anyway. UTCIAD.

I think there is possibly more important issues being worried at board level than this with the takeover in process.
This so say transfer has, I believe, has been drummed up either in the hope the deal doesn't go through or the hope the new board don't want promotion and sell all the family jewels. Probably the ol Twitter strikes again - can be the source of many a false rumour.

Still - time will tell.

Yes it does seem strange that Swindle didn't come out and reject the offer immediately, but as we know, this story has been played out before without any sucess.
I am wondering if perhaps it is a player + cash deal with either Thomas or Tubbs going the other way.

Whether right or wrong I don't know, but it seems to me that these days clubs (premiership downwards) try to buy success by spending money (which they may not necessarily have) on better players. Only time would tell whether that approach will or will not work for us.

I guess none of us is privy to what Eddie Howe has in mind but I hope Pugh is staying with us because to replace him at this crucial time of the season could be dangerous least of all because he and Daniels have developed a very good partnership (I know Daniels is injured but I hope he will soon be back)

I hope I have read your post correctly and my comments ia an accurate reflection of what you have said.

Well, I'm not convinced that the right wng is the stroingest position for Josh, where I feel has has been fairly ordinary this season. Of course, with Pugh operating on the left t would take a hell of a player not to appear ordinary in comparison. Pugh does put in a lot of work and sometimes does struggle to re-produce the magic when we have a un of fixtures. When he's out or jaded it seems to affct the whole team. So, we would have Fogden, Fraser, Ritchie and Pughie and possibly McDermott that are all at home playing wide. To me that sound about right, as this is one position where we need cover as the guys can do without playing with injuries and fatigue else the will not be skinning defenders.

Interesting point AFCBlees, we've probably got a number of real quality players that will barely get a look in given depth of the squad in some positions (Tubbs, McDermott, Flahavan, Thomas, Zubar (regrettably), Davids, Addison!). So quite a lot to trade with.

why would we wwant Tubbs he's a L2 player.

Ritchie wont go for 600k its an insult at that price, he also lokes playing for Di Canio.

Needs to be near to 2m as lets face it you paid 800k for Tubbs who is no where near the quality of Ritchie.
Now he have new investors and they have stated they dont want him to go i would be surprised if he did.
were a bigger club and with Di Canio and new investors who want hampionship football it would be stupid to let him go to you.

I don't think Pugh would leave. The ink is hardly dry on his contract! He really took his time and considered his future before signing it. Surely he can't have changed his mind that quickly! Do you have any reason for thinking that he may be off? I haven't heard anything. I would hope after the way he has been playing we would firmly reject any offers. I really hope there is no foundation to this.

I think you have enough good players without getting into more debt buying Ritchie!.

After all you are making derogatory remarks and childish comments like "Swindle" based on poor potential finance management and what do AFCB do?, the same **** thing purchasing too many players.

We are reasonably close rivals but to have a go at the Swindon fans that are no different than you because of the antics of club owners is very narrow minded indeed.............k

If Eddie pulls this one off, it will be the shrewdest of business deals. Paulo will be doing his nut! Get ready for a Di Canio rant and resignation. Matt Ritchie is definitely the missing link to the team. He can play left or right wing, so can cover for Marc Pugh when injured and when the 'Hobbit' is fit, there will be contention for the right wing position. Keeps everyone on their toes. We need to bring some new blood in, rather than keep signing ex players. Fingers crossed that he will be turning out for us against MK Dons on Saturday.

Its been a busy day at County Ground and this is just a distraction. If Howe was megga serious about securing Ritchies services he would have had things well wrapped up by now. If he has the money made available to him then why not bid in plenty of time instead of waiting until the last minute. With other clubs from the CCC lining up for Ritchie why would he go to another L1 club instead of an established Championship side. Neither Swindon or Bournemouth have a written guarantee of promotion, but the deciding factor is, he likes, no loves playing for the manager he has now, and that is the difference. Neil Perrett is just stirring the mire, yet another cheap shot journo working for yet another provincial rag.

Amazing. For the first time in my living memory we are not a selling club. It's becoming evident just how much money Maxim has at his disposal for the club. Hopefully, like the other Russian, he is here for the long run and will be writing a good few mllion off. It's funny, I just felt really comfortable with the signals given in Eddie Mitchell's article today. Everyone seems to be pulling in the same direction and talking sense. How about getting that temporary stand back now Mr Mitchell.

were a bigger club and with Di Canio and new investors who want hampionship football it would be stupid to let him go to you.
Really look silly now dont ya. Deary me.!!!!!

Why - he is saying what he believes - shame about the outcome - but hey - some you win, some you lose.

Remember Charlie Austin - we got him whilst you lot were having problems the rest is history.

Matt R - Bargain of the season - don't fluff your lines now with promotion or your big man might have thoughts about shutting up shop and pulling his money out.

Again it's a case of do you believe all the rumours? let's wait and see shall we, this time yesterday we were thinking Ritchie was never likely to happen and we pulled that one off, I can see Thomas as a maybe, and Davids as more likely, a surprise though, that would depend on who Howe can get in, do we really want Bartley or BWP? all still conjecture, should be an interesting day ahead!

Yes we know that -and that's when the problems start - printing or pumping more money in only makes it a disaster waiting to happen .... look around the leagues and open those eyes - hence why the FL are going to clamp down on this.

You are on a 'high' for obvious reasons but suggest it is - keep your feet on the floor time.

A fine player and if the BBC are right a "snip" for £400K - clearly Eddie is building a squad with the Championship in mind. But promotion is by no means guaranteed this Season, the Play Offs are a lottery and both Tranmere and Doncaster are very consistant. I have every sympathy with Swindon supporters, we all know here, just what it's like to see a team sold off - often for peanuts and hope that is doesn't prove necessary in their case - I fear that De Canio would walk in those circumstances, a double blow for them. But what a headache Eddie is going to have in selecting a team, we are very strong already in the positions Ritchie plays in and with Fraser and McDonald on the comeback trail !!!!. As for the worries re Max Demin's loans to the Club, I suspect that, as Al Fayed has done at Fulham recently, he will transfer loans into shares, thus taking complete control.

Steady eddie - Your the prize P***k of the season. Total T***T
I think you only have to look back at the stick Swindle fans have dished out to understand why the same sort of stick is being dealt back. If you lot hadn't dished it out in the first place you'd not be getting it back now. So in future you lot might be a little careful who you slag off!!! That said, hope you guys get better news today and join us in the Championship HOPEFULLY, because nothing in football is certain... UTCIAD
They dont like it up-em do they Pete.
We did have some fun on ther site last night though didn't we. Was surprised you popped up on there.
But i guess they are worth it.!!!!

Matt Ritchie will never ever, ever, ever sign for AFC BOURNEMOUTH ever. Pmsl.
Sick to death of all the stick they dished out, so I thought it was time to give a bit back, especially as they simply wouldn't believe that we'd signed Ritchie, it as priceless LOL... Bought my Sheff Utd and Coventry tickets today, bring on the Pompey game, games can't come around fast enough now... UTCIAD
Fair play to you, i am also down for pompey & sheff utd games. Hadn't realised coventry tickets were on sale, but i will get ticket for that as well. Feel obliged to go to MK on saturday now.UTCIAD.

You have some tough games coming up so lets see how you get on.

Your all getting confident so lets see how we are at the end of the season.

Failure could be costly for you.

Your crowds need to increase otherwise as i said before your Russian Mafia benefactor could get fed up as our owner did and that is the only reason you got Ritchie as he didnt want to put more money into the club.

Yes your all **** a hoop at the moment but as they say what goes around comes around!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beware!!!!!!!!!!!

You are so informed aren't you LeGob, our crowds need to increase.????. All home areas been sold out for last 5 home games and almost definately the next 3 as well. And guess what, our highest gate was against Crewe and not the mighty Swindle. We all have difficult games to come, there are no easy games in this league and most cherries fans are very level headed about where we have come from, where we currently are & where we want to get to, so we will take 1 game at a time and see where it takes us. Thanks for careing though.!!!!!!.

ENVY IS SUCH AN AWFUL THING.....

What cracks me up Steady Eddie, is you live far closer to Swindon than Bournemouth, yet you obviously know which is the better club to support!! LOL

The three players STFC have coming in are a massive bonus, and we will finish above AFCB.

We have had our debts written off, so in effect we got £13.5 million for Ritchie.

Every club will want to beat you lot now, and we will sneak in 2nd place.

B,Muff, always run from Swindon.

Le God, you to take a look at your own posts over the past year or so to realize why we're now rubbing Swindon fans face in the Ritchie signing.

You seem to show the same kind of arrogance Saints fans had a few years. Difference is Swindon aren't going anywhere.
