Cherries: Unbeaten run bites the dust as Walsall claim victory

CHERRIES’ 15-match unbeaten run in League One came to an end today as Walsall registered a deserved victory at the Banks’s Stadium.

Eddie Howe’s men were up against it at the break after Sam Mantom’s goal and a Will Grigg penalty had put the Saddlers 2-0 ahead.

And although Brett Pitman netted to make it 2-1 four minutes into the second half and Febian Brandy was sent off for Walsall, another Grigg penalty sealed victory for the hosts.

Brandy and Jamie Paterson both saw early chances fail to trouble David James before a goalbound effort from Pitman was charged down by a defender.

Skipper Elphick saved the day when he blocked Grigg’s shot towards an unguarded net after James had spilled a cross from Mantom.

However, the reprieve was short lived as Walsall opened the scoring when Mantom’s centre from the right sailed across the face of the goalmouth before nestling in the bottom corner.

Cherries went close to levelling when Pitman’s header from a Josh McQuoid cross came back off the crossbar with Saddlers goalkeeper Ian McLoughlin beaten.

Walsall doubled their lead when Grigg, felled by James for the penalty, drilled his spot kick straight down the middle on the stroke of half-time.

Pitman threw Cherries a lifeline when he headed home a Grabban cross to halve the deficit four minutes into the second half.

Paterson’s strike was touched on to the post by James before a header from Wes Thomas from close range bounced off the underside of the crossbar and landed in McLoughlin’s hands.

Brandy received his marching orders for picking up a second yellow card for a lunge on Eunan O’Kane as the pair challenged for the loose ball on the goalline after James had parried Malvind Benning’s free-kick.

Substitute Matt Tubbs fluffed his lines from six yards when he put the ball over the crossbar before McQuoid drilled a shot straight down McLoughlin’s throat.

Grigg converted a second penalty after O’Kane had inadvertently picked up the ball in the 18-yard area, thinking referee Andy Davies had penalised Cherries for an earlier foul.

Cherries: James, Francis, Cook, Elphick, Daniels, Fogden (Fletcher, 81), Arter (McQuoid, 36), O’Kane, Grabban, Pitman, Thomas (Tubbs, 74).

Unused subs: Seaborne, McDermott, Partington, Jalal (g/k).

Booked: James, McQuoid.

Saddlers: McLoughlin, Purkiss, Butler, Downing, Benning, Baxendale (J Chambers, 86), A Chambers, Mantom, Paterson, Grigg, Brandy.

Unused subs: Holden, Featherstone, Hemmings, Bowerman, Taylor, Grof (g/k).

Booked: Purkiss, Brandy, Baxendale.

Sent off: Brandy.

Attendance: 3,173 (including 317 visiting supporters).

Without question the poorest performance since Eddie Howe came back. Groves didn't given the team talk did he?
No creativity, poor finishing (Wes Tho-miss missing another open goal!) and dodgy defending did for us against a Walsall team who've been on a good run of late. We desperately missed Marc Pugh today and once Arter had come off we were clearly second best in midfield. And what was Fogden thinking picking the ball up in the area?
Results around us didn't go our way either with the top two way ahead even with our couple of games in hand. The play off places are our only realistic aim now..... but not if we play like we did today. All i all a bad day at the office. Let's hope the Hartlepool game is on Tuesday and we can bounce back with three points.

Acknowledge that this is EH first league defeat however...another example of turning up for 45 mins - we were dire in the first half according to Radio WM

Desperately need a tough target man - to rough up the opposition - we may have some good players but they are too lightweight when the going gets tough in the opponents box

3 points at bottom club H'pool is vital to recover from this forgettable effort

Inevitable that such a result would come along at some time but we came up against a side who have been on a good run of results and are challengers, like us, for a play off place.
We didn't have much luck with our efforts today, but of course it doesn't help to give away two penalties.
We should accept that we have had a wonderful run of results to put us in a position that we could not dream of in the early part of the season. No reason for the players or supporters to be downhearted. The team has earned it's reputation and the opposition will be delighted to beat them. That's football.
Congratulations to the gallant 371 supporters who made the trip in such weather conditions.

Disappointing since this was the only game I've got to this season. The team looked very jaded, short on inspiration and variety in attack and were too easily opened up by some small but quick-footed Walsall attackers. Their central defender Buttler didn't give Thomas a look in, whilst our others front men looked short of ideas. The second penalty was a disaster, since we were getting back in the game. one of the Bournemouth defenders tackled just outside the left edge of the box and Walsall appealed loudly for a free-kick; With everyone looking at the referee and play more or less stopped, Eunan O'Kane thought that the referee had blown for a foul and gathered the ball to take it to the spot outside the penalty area where the foul occurred; in fact the referee.had waved play on and there was O'Kane with the ball in his arms goalkeeper style inside the penalty area when the linesman flagged for handball and the penalty was awarded. For the second time James, who had made a number of mistakes failed to save and that knocked the stuffing out of the team just when it looked as though we might get back on level terms.
Don't know how the groundstaff shifted th 4 inches of snow, but I wished they hadn't. Walsall wanted to play, but the crowd and atmosphere and game were all poor. Time for a bit of a shake-up in the team perhaps!

I think upfront has been a problem all season, most of our goals have come from midfielders and no matter how many strikers we have none of them are prolific and our opportunities to goals ratio is poor! Given the chances we create we shoud have really trounced someone this season which hasn't really happened. I would also like to see Donal given some game-time, with Pughie out today I would have thought it was a good time for hime to come into the starting line-up. But hey never mind congratulations to Eddie, Jason and team for the unbeaten run, chin up, lick wounds and we go again on Tuesday or Saturday. UTC!

Disjointed effort all round today.
All the posters singling out Thomas need to have a reality check. Pitman and Grabbon were totally ineffective for most of the game and both wasted fantastic chances to score. Tubbs came on and immediately missed a clear chance from six yards.
Thomas was well marked, had little support, and the one chance he had hit the underside of the bar.
O'Kane picking the ball up sort of summed up the day, untill their Number nine nutmegged Cook who immediately dived head first in to two foot of snow. That did sum the day up.

Bl**dy freezing. Took an hour in the car for my feet to thaw out.

Given the ijury that Grabban sustained on Tuesday, I was very surprised to see him in the team today and presume that he would not have been his usual athletic self. Need say no more about Wes T. Pitman, doesn't have the ability to work a defence hard, but his major attribute is his instinctive poaching positioning and conversion rate on half chances. So I presume we were pretty impotent up front. Add to this one half of the great Pugh/Daniels duble act being missing, with the resulting lack of supply and I feared the worst before we kicked off and so it proved it to be. Unfortunately, from the trio of exciting young strikers we had under Eddie & Jason first time round, it is probably the best of the bunch that hasn't returned (Ings).

Nothing to worry about as every team loses eventually and especially after such a long unbeaten run and there will be games when we will be without our best players, but the squad of players we have, managed by the brilliant Eddie Howe will get promotion this season simply because we are the best team in this division so lets stop blaming players or being pessimistic and accept it was just a bad day at the office.

I completely agree. He's done nothing in all the games he's played in since returning. Coincidence our form has dipped slightly? I know we missed Pugh and (Arter) in effect today but the forward line and putting the ball in the net aspect is starting to concern me a little. One or two more in please Ed. Marv in midfield to cover Arter and McDonald and a big man up front. Tubbs needs a run in the side. He must be gutted Thomas is back in ahead of him.

Good admission prices (for age concession!) and that's all I can be positive about...apart from the banter with Saddlers fans. We didn't look anything like the team that played a few weeks ago -lack of passion, lack of joined up understanding and lack of ideas. Guess now I'll have to talk to the wife, or take the dog out...forgot, the dog died two years ago!

It seems as if Thomas has an attitude problem = doesn't want to be here.If that's the case let him go. The commentator on radio Solent said Thomas walked off the pitch even before his number had been held up when he was substituted. You were there and you say he only had one shot in 90 minutes. That sums his enthusiasm up and his selfish behaviour is letting the team down now.

Disappointing since this was the only game I've got to this season.

For me we shouldn't single out Wes. I question if our strikeforce is strong enough to get us promoted, not just Wes.
Yes Grabban has scored many goals, but has looked average recently and before Howe returned, was it just a purple patch?
Pitman seems to score a fair number of goals but I do question if his presence in the team hampers the flow of the team. At home games especially, we don't have the attacking threat we did before Christmas.
Thomas doesn't seem interested and should be sold in my opinion. He isn't good enough to warrant the impact he has had on this team.
Tubbs is fine as a sub, but we could certainly do without him.
Although we've got good draws against Brentford and Swindon (and Wigan), with the deficit Groves gave us, we need to knick wins wherever possible, and we need the best possible strikers to do this.
Overall, I think our strikeforce is good, but the rest of our team is great.

Agree it would seem to me it's Tubbs and McDermott's time to really show what they can do (or not) and perhaps Frank Demouge too could be something that we don't currently have up front. I know we can still do the play-offs but maybe we need to see if we have real depth in the team for next season?

Agreed.
We now have two flying wingers but someone must be in there to get on the end of the crosses, a la Sam Vokes. The absence of Demouge is a mystery. He played in a higher league than ours so what's happened. If Eddy really doesn't rate him, why not let him go cheap and save on his wages?

One bad day at the office does nat call for wholesale changes, even Barca lost yesterday and look at Brentford who were also on a long run undefeated. It was a tough week and this was a game too far, now it's back to square one and the start of the next run, certainly does not warrant all this negative stuff. Thomas is an easy target, O Kane made a mistake, and James has been a rock, when was the last time we let in three? two of them penalties and one of those was a farce! So yep forget yesterday we were not at the races against a side who have won 6 out of 7 themselves, certainly isn't the time to panic buy, if we make the play offs it's a bonus this season!!

I'm not saying wholesale changes Frankie but, as another post has said, most of our goals come from midfield and I've lost count of the number of crosses that find defenders' heads or feet.
Regarding Thomas, he will need time to settle back in. He's been away so long that he's almost a new signing. If EH and Thomas himself are looking for him to stay, he must be given time although, as I have said, a taller stronger striker is needed IMHO.

It's all about opinion, I don't think Thomas is the answer either and Pitman is still settling in, we already have a big striker on the books, a certain Dutch player by the name of Demouge, Eddie hasn't felt the need to change things which considering the run we have been on and the goals we have been banging in you can understand why. This season is about building Eddie's team, I think any chance of promotion will be a bonus, surely we are more set up to go for it next season when Eddie can get rid of the dead wood and build a team that he can manager properly? We have made 3 very good signings this week so in Eddie I certainly trust, also the very best teams do get the majority of goals from midfield, I admit we don't have the height up front at times but when have we? It will be interesting to see what Eddie does after yesterday, he won;t be happy that we have put in such a poor show, he's all about the hard work etc, I certainly don't think though that he is going to make any big changes, he trusts these players and will from his past record, stick with them!!

Thomas and Grabban missed absolute sitters and James, for the umpteenth time in his career, failed to engage his brain. God knows what O'Kane was thinking.
I know these were bare-bones highlights and from what I can gather from those who went, we were poor generally but it seems like we threw that game away.

Can't get too downhearted yet. We haven't won in five games, but after the run we've been on in the last 3 months, we were due for a trough at some stage. Key is how we respond to this first minor dip since Eddie came back. Play offs are still well within our grasp, and automatic promotion is still possible, aswell as 100 points!

Having been used to a bare bones sqaud in previous seasons, a swollen squad can also present its problems. So many choices, so many combinations, difficult to know right now what is the best option up front. Midfield and defence slightly more straighforward right now, however with the signing of Allsop the goalkeeping spot will be interesting.

The Tubbs transfer fee still wrankles with me a bit, seeing as how in league terms, he has probably cost a grand a minute up to now. Would like him to get a run, just purely because his massive fee.

However in Eddie we have to trust. Can't wait to see Ryan Fraser and Francis in action down the right side. Hope he does't warm the bench for too long and the playing clearance comes through quickly.

the fact we lost does not unduly worry me as it was bound to happen at some stage, but what does annoy me is the way we contribute to our own downfall, not for the first time this season have we conceded 2 penalties in a match, and the number of penalties given away this season shows a lack of composure and thought in our defending, until the coaching staff manage to solve the riddle as to why we are continually slow starters in matches and teach our players to be composed around our own penalty area we will continue to struggle against the good sides, as has been said before the goals are drying up when players start missing from 6yards or less you have problems, a little less talk about what you think will happen and a little more concentration on what you do please lads

Only those who went can really say what went wrong over the 90mins except for the rugby incident which saw on the tele.More and more goals given away by dithering and losing possession in midfield need a bit of cover there.Still lets not panic its worked so far , lets hope we dont start playing 2 wingers I know Barcelona and Brentford lost their unbeaten runs yesterday but they werent playing Walsall.

I've just watched the Football League Show. From the highlights they showed, we could and should have won that game.
Thomas and Grabban missed absolute sitters and James, for the umpteenth time in his career, failed to engage his brain. God knows what O'Kane was thinking.
I know these were bare-bones highlights and from what I can gather from those who went, we were poor generally but it seems like we threw that game away.
Yes DC addict, we could have won the game. Yet again we give away needless penalties and again we miss sitting shots on the goal.
The team needs to work on these things if we are to get anywhere near promotion this season.

Well done to the brave 371 supporters who defied the elements to cheer on the team. If we had converted some good chances it would have been a big win, but that rarely happens to teams and the luck was not with us. Hartlepool is doubtful, may be a good thing to allow Arter and Pugh to recover from injuries. The league standings are so close, if we win the next one we could be back in the play-offs zone. So its always about the next game. UTCIAD!

You are never going to win any game if you give two soft penalties away. But we are missing key players in McDonald & Pugh and with Harry Arter limping off as well, were always up against it, will also be mising Cook from Monday as well. So the run is over and it's time to start another one. The Hartlepool game is unlikely to be played on Tuesday, the weather forecast is for sub zero temperatures there, so time to recover. As for Demouge and Davids, they are under contract and no one appears to be interested in signing them, Eddie clearly believes that he has better options and I for one wouldn't question his judgement. I would agree that this is a Season of change and would expect a lot of changes in the Squad for next Season, 7/8 out and 3/4 new players coming in..

Just watched the football league show yet again incompetent refereeing, okane should of played to the whistle but it was such an obvious foul by Steven cook on the edge of the box and how the referee did not give Walsall a free kick is a mystery

Watched it as well. The Walsall player was scythed down with the ball bouncing up to O'Kane. A defender would probably have wellied it out of touch but it was a stonewall foul with no advantage to the opposition.

Unbelievable for the ref not to have given Walsall a free kick.

Thomas is not the answer to our lack of fire power. He just doesn't work for us and yet Tubbs gets splinters in his arse sitting on he bench. Fletcher is a waste of a subs position. Good to see pitman on the score sheet but he too looks to be struggling. But our new signing from Aberdeen will hopefully add to our attacking flare and put Grabbon but in the front line. The loss had to come but well done to he team for a fantastic run.
